I love Ghost Stories. I only play it solo, but I ignore the solo rules; I just play all four characters myself. Since there is no hidden information, this game is susceptible to quarterbacking, which could be a downside, but it makes it perfect for solo play! Zee, try playing Last Bastion solo, but as all four players and let us know what you think! I too like the uniqueness of the theme of Ghost Stories better, but I'm intrigued by the changes they've made. I love good design, and it seems from what you've shown here that the changes they've made (other than theme) have all been improvements in design.

Hi, First of all I apologize due to my basic English... but my question is what happens if I reach the moment to draw the Warlord card and there are not empty avaliable slots in any color/bastion side? Do I automatically lose the game? should I discard a card from the same color and replace it by the Warlord? Thanks in advance

Remember you only gran card if you don't have a "full board". Recuerda que solo robas carta si no tienes tu tablero lleno, es decir, siempre habrá dónde ponerlo

So in solo do you play 4 characters or just one? Nothing is stoping a solo player from using 4 powers.

I can't see replacing Ghost Stories.... too many other games out there and this doesn't appear to be that significant of a change for me. Now if I didn't have the former.... well maybe still... I dig the ghost theme and artwork.

Not clear why solo is worse here... You can play with 1, 2, 3 or 4 characters, your choice... What does GH do different?

I haven`t played ghost stories, I was interested though. The only reason I didn`t buy it is because I am mostly a solo player and although I have heard it is good as solo, what bothers me is that you have to set up all 4 of the heroes and use them in someway. This reskin doesn`t seem to have adressed that. Also I have to say I love Asian folclore and for this reason it seems to me that Ghost Stories art delivers more than this. I showed the box cover art and board art of this game to my husband (He is not an avid gamer, but he is a painter) and the first question he asked is" where is the castle?" Now I am not saying I don`t like what I see, but that is a bit confusing, while Ghost stories was more clear to me. Having said all that, Zee I really love your reviews. Keep up!

This looks great, I'm just not sure if my wife will like this. Plus I would prefer a bit less luck (always feels like I have bad luck with dice). Wish someone would do a Yggdrasil Chronicles review before Essen so that I can decide between these two.

This is a reskin of Ghost Stories, which is different from Spirit Island. While I have never played Spirit Island a game you might enjoy is Rise of Tribes (I love Rise of Tribes).

@@LeeroyPorkins While I like Rise of Tribes, it is nothing like Spirit Island. As for Ghost Stories/Last Bastion - I'd say they are much simpler than Spirit Island, although not necessarily easier.

I love Spirit Island! And Ghost Stories too! Ghost stories is by far a simpler game in terms of rules and stuff, so you won't have any trouble with that. I think you would like it because the vibe of the game is similar (in terms of everyone defending against invaders). I will finish by saying that in spirit island, as you may have experienced, everyone needs to be a little more in charge of their own stuff because there's so much going on with your powers and deck that even when you work together, some things about your combos you gotta figure out "by yourself" because everyone is doing the same. In Ghost Stories that doesn't happen, so there is a ton more of interaction and discussion and back and forth about options, and strategy, and to me that is great. Because of that, Ghost Stories is a little less systematic than Spirit Island (imo), and there is more luck involved. Just some thoughts :)

This one has much more luck than spirit island. Where in spirit island, you can plan stuff and they will work out perfectly, since you are not relying on luck and roll of a die, here best plans can be completely ruined with bad luck on die(at least in Ghost stories, and this is basically a reskin with some changes). If you are okay with luck, and that you might loose often because of it, this one is quite fine.

yeah, I just cant justify bringing "challenging" coops to the table, certainly not when luck has such a big influence. "hey come over, play a game and feel what it's like to lose"

Losing can be fun as well, especially in coop-games I think. Probably because its a shared experience, you can laugh about it and want to try again. For example, I had a lot more fun losing Pandemic or Belratti than I had with winning a lot of competitive games. It really depends on the persons playing of course, so I dont want to disagree with you, just want to give another perspective on losing. For me, its about the gaming experience as a whole, the ending just plays a small part in it :)

This may be a more accessible game than Ghost Stories but I can't help but feel they've diluted the whole experience. The point of Ghost Stories is that it is notoriously difficult but definitely beatable and welcomes challengers, rather than gateway gamers. The art and theme in this also seems so generic that it's verging on being boring. A hard pass for me. But I do like the engraved dice as opposed to the Twister dice in Ghost Stories.

I have no idea why they went with such a generic fantasy theme, except for mainstream appeal. They could easily have slapped a western-, Vietnam- , post apocalyptic- or any of a million more unique themes on here.

Guess it's a matter of taste, but I'll take generic fantasy over generic 20th century war or generic post-apocalypse any day. At least the first one has a bit of colour to it
