The U.S. Attack Results Chart mimics the flavour of the actual battle. The first two days saw small incremental gains by the Marines and this game captures that feel perfectly. If you have studied the Battle For Tarawa then you’ll be incredibly frustrated with the lack of perceived progress on the map. Of all of Butterfield’s games, and I have them all, Tarawa is his masterpiece. The game is faithful to the actual battle and it plays beautifully.

I agree Bart, Decision Games components(specifically the counters) need to be up-to-date with our times. I used an exacto knife to cut mine out as well because I was worried about tearing them. The system is not to bad as a solitaire game, but the charts do tend to slow it down and it seemed to get bogged down in my play. It is still a very good game and I look forward to the next solitaire offering as well.

my Tarawa game is still unpunched. but I don't remember having problems with the Omaha or Peleliu counters. I clip the counters though. I really like the earth tones and classic appearance. I don't have a problem with the charts in the system. my complaint is how much time you have to spend doing the Japanese turn. The Japanese, fire, and move, and constantly reinforce and charge with infantry and charge with tanks. I also don't care for the close combat system. It bogs things down as it can take many cards. these comments are more about the Peleliu game but I bet Tarawa is similar. The system really is genius though.

Excellent job, Bart.. John B. is one of my favorite designers and I just picked up Omaha Beach. I would be inclined to gush myself-- I really enjoy the Omaha Beach mechanics. Very elegant. I really enjoy your reviews-- I will likely get this myself once I'm tired of Omaha.

Thank you Ohara. The Tarawa battle has always amazed me. That determination to wade in under fire...wow.

Great game I agree on the counters I also used a knife after I ripped a couple

I did the same thing with the RAF reprint's counters. They were some of the worst cut counter sheets I've seen, including stuff from the 80s. The only ones I remember the paper getting ripped from the cardboard, still stuck to the sprue anyway.

The counters from DDay at Omaha were by far my biggest complaint about the game. It looks like they are the same quality here. Many of them split and had to be glued and all of them had horrible chads which needed to be clipped off.

Awesome game ..... Good review. Just out of interest have you checked out B - 29 Superfortress by Legion ? Very similar to B - 17, which I know is a favourite. Please keep the wargame vids coming mate :)

B-29 seemed less about the inbound fighters and more about fuel and mechanical problems. Now I hear the Korea expansion changes that. Now, I am getting ready to learn and review Picket Duty from the same designer. Think B-17 but a destroyer defending against kamakasi and regular fighters. With the 2nd edition PDF rules. I hear the 1st had problems. And thank you Sir.
