San Juan Review - with Tom and Zee

I thought about this as a milder version of RftG for our group (some have problem wrapping their heads around the icons and strategies). Now will have to wait for that 2nd edition to come to our stores.

Is this still a recommended pick up if you have and play Race?

Race for the Galaxy is DOA in my house because I'll never get my wife to swallow the theme and massive learning curve of the iconography. Frankly, I'm not that keen on memorizing all of those icons myself. San Juan, on the other hand, is something I could see us actually enjoying so this gets added to my list of possible future acquisitions. Thanks for the review!

The chapel (i think) lets you stick a card under each turn for a point which is awesome at the beginning. Our game store has had a copy for a while and we always take the guild halls out of the deck, way too overpowered.

i like the theme of this game, interesting mechanics and sweet hard to decide choices of what to play like Zee mentioned big recommendation for both games, san juan and puerto rico, i like them both a LOT but if i am gonna compare to the rftg, i would say i like rftg SUPER MEGA A LOT :)

That angst of deciding whether or not to sell multiple good cards in order to pay for a really nifty building reminds me a lot of Summoner Wars. I've never played this one or Puerto Rico--thanks for the cool overview.

With the quarry, owner pays one less for city building. Does that stack on with the building privilege role? The owner only needs to pay one card to build a 3 cost building. With the trading post, you basically always have the seller privilege for the rest of game? Be nice if designers put clarifications on cards, I know it makes the card more busy but it beats checking the rule book and Internet forums

It does stack in Puerto Rico and in Race for the galaxy, so would assume so (have never played San Juan).

0:54 What do you mean by this Tom? Direct inspiration for Race for the Galaxy? That is not what I had heard, so had to check BGG. From BGG: Race for the Galaxy's development began when Thomas Lehmann, at Alea's request, started work on a card game version of Puerto Rico in parallel with Andreas Seyfarth's own. Their independent efforts resulted in some degree of collaboration, and though some of Mr. Lehmann's design ideas did make it into what eventually became San Juan, he continued to develop his concepts, taking the theme and other elements from an unpublished customizable card game he had previously designed.
