Cavett hit the nail on the head for my experience when seeing “The Deer Hunter” when it was released, about the russian roulette scenes. Talk about intense, these scenes were just that. At one point I had to get up and leave the theater. When I got in the lobby there were about a half dozen other women who had to take a break. I went back after a brief breather and watched the rest of the film, roulette scenes and all. I found Walken absolutely entrancing in that role. Have never forgotten any of those scenes, and I’m an old broad now. Man, that film was tremendous, but I still cannot watch the last half f that movie after all these years. Geez, was it a masterpiece.

My favourite of his performances is as Johnny Smith in The Dead Zone. It's stunning in a subdued and understated way. He gives the character such a tragic quality but never oversells or needs to beat the audience over the head. I don't know if any other actors were in consideration for the role, but it's hard to believe that anyone would have been better suited. There's something in the way he delivers a line of dialogue that send a chill down your spine. There's a moment when my girlfriend visits him as he's recovering from his lengthy coma and he tells about a reading assignment he had given his class before his accident . It was The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and he quotes the final lines: As he (Icabod Crane) was a bachelor and in nobody's debt nobody troubled their head about him. There's something deeply sad as he realizes he has lost everything, including his girlfriend (she's now married), several years of his life, and a body that will probably never entirely heal or function as it did before. But he never plays it in an overly bitter or self-pitying way. It's a remarkable performance that should have gotten him at least an Oscar nomination.

Was that on the channel called : MOVIES ! ...? I wanted to watch that even though I've seen it before . I don't have cable and I had only recently hooked up the digital antenna which only gave me five shity channels here in Dallas thank God one of them was the MOVIES ! channel ... and I was grateful the other one was the local Fox affiliate so I could watch the 700 Club . ... but last month something went wrong and the antenna isn't working . Well at least I got to see a great movie with Lee Marvin and a very young Angie Dickinson ... I can't even remember what it was called now but it was excellent ... I wonder if you saw it ... and remember what it was called ?

@@gardensofthegods It was on a dvd. I have a few movies based on Stephen King's novels. Delores Claiborne, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Needful Things (and whatever others I have I'd have to check). Anyway, is the title of the Lee Marvin Angie Dickinson movie that you mentioned called Point Blank? If it is, then I agree that it's an excellent movie. Lee Marvin always could play a great tough guy.

And this was 1993, before his others legendary roles like Pulp Fiction, Nick of Time, Sleepy Hollow, The Prophecy, Catch Me if you can & Seven Psychopaths or his really fucking hilarious and funny roles in Mousehunt, Wedding Crashers, Blast from the past, America's Sweethearts, The rundown, Click & Hairspray. The man was already an excellent actor in the 70s and the 80s but he became a legend by the 90s/2000s/2010s
