I had the exact same experience when I played it. Not usually what I'm looking for when I play a Civilization game (which I love) and found some of the thematic elements jarring (e.g., inventing the light bulb in the stone age) but I thoroughly enjoyed the game and find myself wanting to play it again because of the intriguing puzzle it presents and its re-playability.

My grandma worked on ancient tapestry restoration for local government.. ... .. .. .. but she had no tailoring skills whatsoever, she was an embroider of the truth and really stitched up local government by charging them monies.

It's been a long time since I played this game. I remember liking the mechanics, but the theming felt a little silly sometimes with how things worked out. For example I somehow knew how to build zepplins and batteries before inventing nails.

The expansions make this from a 7 to a 9. Especially arts and architecture. It adds a 5th track but it doesn't add much more complexity. I call this "Civ Sauced" This game is great. Its in my top 10.

We've enjoyed the game and yes, you do have to get over the idea that it's not actually a civ game. I like the very asymetric civs too. My main gripe with the game is the variance of the tapestry cards. THAT'S what is going to make or break you. I don't think I can recall a game where the winner did NOT have better Tapestry cards than everyone else. If you keep getting stuck with weak ones... or ones you just have no ability to exploit... you're done. Still, once everyone has the rules down, the game plays fairly quickly.

This isn't a bad game, but it's not a civlization building game. It has that theme, but it doesn't have any actual civilization building. It's just a Euro game, and IMO not a particularly good one.

I absolutely despised that game. It’s a bingo-card tracks simulator. The aspects of civilization building are void. I get that it’s kind of a point salad, but if you call it a civ game and it’s not, it failed.
