I have one of these on the farm. Very useful if you don't mind a little work. I reinforced my bead breaker as they aren't heavily made and after a time begin to fail (bend). I drilled holes in circular plate around shaft at varied diameters and use a bolt to fasten rim as it's quicker and more secure then the method it comes with. I appreciate you taking your time to display it's use. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who doesn't mind a little sweat in turn for saving some money on unit. Plus there's less to go wrong with a manual unit once the bugs are gotten out. 👍

I like your video. I've had mine 15yrs from harbor freight and I love using it. I'm pretty quick. I couldn't even guess how many I've changed for me and some friends. I put mine on a plate of steel but it's heavy. I will be change that to 2 pieces of 4ft x 4ft x -3/4- plywood sandwich together. Easier to move around.

I have bent my bar. I cut the ends off and welded them back on a thicker piece of 1" pipe. The hold down clamp has bent but still works. I tried too break down too stiff of a tire and bent the base. I have mine bolted to a piece of 6' by 4' - 3/4" plywood. Works pretty good and I can move it around. Great video. I subscribed.

Conceptually the flat side against the rim would distribute the forces over a wider area and the rounded part up would act more as a ramp for the tire and not catch the tire when demounting, but in real life it makes little difference. Try it with the flat end down next time, it won't be any worse for sure

Great video! I just recently bought and used one of these Harbor Freight tire changers for the first time and it was relatively easy and enjoyable even for a first timer like myself. I did have to do a big, thick truck tire so I didn't get the benefit of the easy on easy off you get with flimsy like a banana peel tires, but I don't ever mind using my elbow grease because I have plenty of it. I do however disagree with the last thing you said... I usually always feel better off knowing how to do a job myself than having someone else do it for me. I just can't do most electrical and or electronic work and it irks me that I don't know or understand much of it and have to get other people to do it for me. I love tools because combined with knowledge, they can give you a beautiful level of self sufficiency and the lack of need to rely on others. There are also so many crappy or scamming mechanics these days, it's good to know how to do a job right yourself... not to mention it saves me money and gives me reasons to buy new tools (which I guess offsets the money I saved by doing it myself, but in a positive way)... I always love buying new tools!

Well IMO The Tire Bar they Give you isn't worth a shit! It Peals off the tire OK, But I could Never Get the Damn thing To work installing the tire(s) . I have a No-Mar Mar now, But Haven't had a Chance to use it. Also I Bent the bead breaker on mine and need to straighten it. I see some guys welded a brace across the bead breaker Im not too good a welder, and My machine is not set up, Has anyone been able to beef up the bead breaker bolting a brace across it, or would that make it worse.

Yep. It’s worth it cause most shops charge over 100 bucks to mount 4 tires. And around here very few will mount em if they didn’t sell em to ya. I got one ... bout to try it out

Balancing is the real problem, changing a tyre was mainly just grunt work. There is a video of someone in India sealing a bead by squirting some lighter fluid into the tyre then throwing a match in there :) Also seems a bit of a waste of time using a worn tyre to replace a slightly more worn tyre. :\

I love mine. I can change most passenger car tires in less than 10 minutes. You'll definitely want to weld up some bracing on the bead breaker for bigger tires. I added a cross bar and a "spine" To mine, and also switched to a solid steel bar for the mount/dismount

Good to FINALLY see someone who bolted the damn thing down. I tore a bead once prying them on. The non flat end is the one used for putting them back on. Using the mounting end of the bar is a skill with a STEEP learning curve.

Well it may the "correct" end to use but I still got the tire on with no damage. I have not been able to get past the STEEP learning curve to use the non flat end to mount a tire yet!

Hey Mike I watched your first video using that HF tire changer. And me and my son had a good laugh with it sorry. But when you use the pointed end of the bar to remove the tire off the rim push down on the other side of the tire down to the middle of the inner rim when turning the bar. The tire will pop off alot easier trust me I went through the same woes with mine. Like your vids.

This is good for if you have an older vehicle with higher aspect ratio tires but with todays newer vehicles and lower aspect ratios along with stiff sidewalls youll be fighting that tire all day lol. If you can find a used hunter tire machine they are the best in the business if you ask me. I have a hunter TC3250 with a side pneumatic press arm I picked up for under a grand. Runs completely on air and very compact and light and even does low pros. If you do a lot of tires I'd recommend getting one

You might have pretended it was tighter and showed how to position the mounting bar, with the angled tip guiding the bead along under the edge of the rim. The key is to hold the bar at a high angle when mounting, which pushes it in the right direction without sliding off the bar. Very few tires go on that easily, so for the purposes of the video it would be good to demonstrate that.

Good vid Brother. It's 25 bucks to mount and balance a tire (or tyre as our friends up north and across the pond say) So if you mount and balance 3 or 4 tires you got your money back. Reminds of the old manual tire changer of my dad's that he got from his uncles old service station. It was from the 50's. I used it a lot on the POS's that had back in the 80's. Though it required 2 guys for most of the work because it wasn't bolted to the floor.

It looks like you've been around the block once or twice with this tool and have a good handle on it. Instead of using soap and water to lube the tire, which is great for a quick fix, you should try using actual tire lube. It cost a little more than soap would but it lasts a long time since you won't need much to do the job and it works much better with this tool plus it won't cause any rot issues later down the line. I used mine for changing the tires on my rock crawlers and I will say that the larger tires were easy to handle with this machine. A 35" tire is about the biggest it will handle without modifying the bead breaker.

2005ish, I had two 1930's tires--been sittin behind a barn somewhere, still on the old rims. No soap or slippery tire stuff would work. Ended up cutting them off with a harbor freight 4 inch grinder. For everything else, that harbor freight tire changer works good. I use the tire spoons. Saves me at least $10 per tire every time I change one. Yeah it's work but it's like gettin a free tank of gas (if you don't mind workin for it). I just go to Walmart and buy the tires on sale and take them home like buying groceries. Generally don't need to balance them if you get them on the rim straight. The trick to changin them big tractor tires is use plenty of soap. Good video, thought I was the only one used them things.

A small 12 volt air pump will fill a tank. The tank sets the bead and fills the tire using an 'open air chuck' on one end of the hose.

Yes I have one exactly like it. It does not fill my tuck tires as quick as the compressor and goes empty relatively quickly. I like the compressor much more. oh and the compressor is much more compact I can carry it on motorcycle.

You have to get the Harbor Freight bubble balancer. I got one and works great for me. A 1/4" thick disk cut out of some rubber mating to put under the star clamp helps to protect Aluminum rims.

OK so I had to look up the part name for that its called a Spider Pedestal. I always called it the star clamp, locking ring or locking clamp. It all depends on how many beers I have had. After using this to take off old tires, you should have discarded tires that you can cut up to make rubber pads for all sorts of useful things. One of which is two strips on opposing sides of the retaining ring to protect the wheel "finish"😅. Then you can tighten down on it with abandon and not worry about the "paint" on the rims. The tire pads work great as jack pads, motorcycle kickstand pads on soft ground, kneeling pads, etc etc. The only way you'll be able to cut through the belt reinforced tread area is with a reciprocating saw, best done while the tire is on metal ramps, with a slot in the middle. Simple process that way to harvest old tires.

Like to add that inside these rims are two ridges one for each side that run along the edge of the rim lip. One side I guess the front side on most rims has a narrower ridge than the other side. You have to take your tires off and put on from this narrow ridge side. If you put them on the side that has the wider ridge (just estimating- ridge about an inch and half wide and half inch high) the tire will not stretch enough to go over this wide ridge, and you will damage the tire and not get it off. This ridge is so the tire will be confined to a smaller space so it can be aired up without too much air going out the side. When the tire gets enough air to fill the space between the ridges it will pop out to the rim lips. I just used one of these Harbor F. changers to change an old trailer tire. This 1960's rim had the wider ridge on the front side. So I had to take the tire off and put a new one on from the back side of the rim. Previously I found a set of Chevy truck tires on aluminum rims that were thrown on side of the road. I carried them home and went to harbor freight and bought the changer to take the rims off. I sold the rims to the scrap yard for enough to pay for the changer.

Les Schwab charges over $150 to install four tires and Discount Tire/America’s Tires charges $124. So in my area it’s worth it to just do it yourself if you can. Save a couple hours driving there and back and also save two hours waiting. So for me I also save 4 hours of my time.

I have a 6 HP 80 Gallon compressor. The compressor you mention should inflate tires ok.

I used a 3 gallon 100psi compressor so, 8 gallon should be no problem. Smaller just takes longer. But it shouldn't take much to pop the bead.

I use the green leak sealer to lubricate the beads.. seems to do a good job with micro leaks around the bead of the tire. Like you noted...the cleaner the rims the better the chance of a good seal. If you have tube tires, it's really important to get the rim cleaned well so rust chunks won't abrade the tube and start a leak.

I keep a bottle of baby talcum powder to dust the tube and the inside of the tire to help prevent a fold in the tube when it's inflated. I use plain soap to aid mounting tube tires. I do mostly 4.10x19 motorcycle tires and getting the tire to seat evenly on the rim can sometimes be a real pain. I've had to inflate and deflate the tire a number of times and over inflate to 40psi to finally get the tire evenly set on the rim. If you are doing mower tires and the rims are really rusty, you can wrap the rims with electrical tape to protect the tube. I do this on spoked motorcycle rims when the rim tube protector is not reusable and a new one isn't at hand. Never use silicone (or any purposed rubber lubricant) to mount tube tires.. even with a clincher mounted in the rim there is the danger that under acceleration the tire will slip on the rim and rip out the valve stem and rapidly deflate the tire...ask me how I know this. Lastly, if your vehicle (especially motorcycles) has aluminum rims get a tire changer like TDM has. If you use tire levers alone, you may break a chunk out of you very expensive rims... you could buy 3 or 4 manual tire changers for what an aluminum motorcycle rim would cost.

Probably already mentioned. Alignment is a bit off (camber) and the tire looks like it was run under inflated. Center is not as worn as the outer edges. That's classic under inflation.

I've seen those tire changers on a few videos now. People with smaller or used tires have pretty good luck, while guys with new tires or larger tires struggle. All in all a great tool I'd say. I have some lawn mower tires I need to change out so maybe you'll see me in your garage. :)

Actually even on larger tires, up to say 18", it is not that bad. The trick is lube (soapy water) and technique. The technique is to make sure the bead OPPOSITE of where you are working is down in the "drop center" (goo.gl/fbk338). Some people like to use Murphy's Oil Soap Tire mounting Lube Paste (goo.gl/Zfftnj). You can smear it on the bead and under the rim. On difficult tires you need a block of wood or something to keep that bead down in the drop center.

When I was "bustin' tires" (just after the dinosaurs left) no one explain it to me ! I originally thought the bead "stretched", which is nearly impossible as it is made out of multiple steel wires ! Much (much) later in life, someone finally explained it to me. As someone else said, a thick piece of rubber under the "star" that clamps the wheel will prevent scratches on the center. There are various homemade and aftermarket non-maring mount/demount bars and bead clamps, although a 2x2x4 chunk of hardwood (maple, oak) or plastic also works.

Cutting up an old tire gives you plenty of cushions to use under the retaining ring and on top of the demounting rim gouger to keep it from doing a number on any rims you halfway care about. Also make lots of non slip pads to cushion the undercarriage when using jack stands and floor jacks. The only way you'll be able to cut up the old tires with steel belts is with a reciprocating saw, I usually brace it between two tire ramps for support. Makes quick work of the tire. Utility knife easily gets it started through the sidewalls, where there's no steel to contend with.

That's a strong man . It is worth it if you are isolated away from tire services or you can get cheap tires without fitting services . Just remember that there may be no warranty on a new tire if it's not fitted by professionals , which I think stinks . What I do is if I have an issue with a tire , change it then take just the tire back to where I purchased it and tell them it was taken off in a country town out woop woop because I decided to have a new one fitted . Never tell your local tire service you do some of your own tires .

Tires have a dot on them where the valve stem is lined up with from what my cousin says and he is a licensed auto mechanic.
