Love the blazer!! Tip: for colour retaining..you can put a mordant in while boiling (easiest mordant is salt ). Also soaking in while the dye is boiling..soaks better and retains well too.😊 Hope that helps somebody!

I would love to see a update of this project a few months from now. How much will it fade over time?
@Orly_Shani4 жыл бұрын
will do!
@kt-so6dh4 жыл бұрын
It will fade as turmeric isnt a permanent dye, Ive taught eco dyeing. Beautiful colours and you can crushed iron tablets to change the ph value and change the colour. As with most eco made dyes changing the mix with metal oxides gives a whole spectrum of colours. Turmeric is cool and easy to use but drying in the sun and general contact with the sun will fade the colour greatly and as stated before will fade with washing. But have fun!
@irenecordoba83874 жыл бұрын
Would vinegar help to set or fix the colour so that when you wash it don't get white? I usually wash shirts with turmeric stains and the go completely white in the washing machine.
@kt-so6dh4 жыл бұрын
@@irenecordoba8387 there isnt anything to stop it fading im afraid. I suggest cold washes and then at a later time a re-dye. If you really want that permanence then I would suggest a permanent shop bought dye. One well known uk brand still changes by altering the ph value so you can get the look of natural dyes by playing with the mixtures by adding vinegar and iron or even rusty metal items. Vinegar is used as a mordant and turmeric doesnt need a mordant to attach to fabric. Botanical colour at your fingers by rebecca Desnos is a good, simple to use starter book if you're looking at natural dyeing. It's not super in depth but gives some good ideas, explains the processes x
@jdmosaics4 жыл бұрын
k t vinegar is not a mordant, it is a modifier. Most food stuffs do not have any permanence on fabric unless you use a mordant. If you really want to learn about natural dying use a good book by Jenny Dean or India Flint. There is so much misinformation re natural dying on the internet. The Clothing industry and chemical dying is one of the biggest environmental disasters of our time and anything we can do to stop this earth destruction by using natural methods in the clothing industry, the better off our planet will be.

Everything turned out kind of pretty, if subtle, which is not a bad thing. They all look really nice, even the red wine to grey one, though I think my fave is the soft pinks of the avo dye... :)) Sunlight can "bleach" the tone of a lot of red based foods, that's why you should always put anything that has been stained with a tomato-based sauce in the sun to dry after washing it. That's probably why the red wine shirt turned grey, but I really like the softness of those tones of grey. I'm a bit of a pastels chick. ;) One of the best natural food dyes would have to be the Mulberry. As a kid we had a giant Mulberry tree in the back corner of our yard, and we would always be in that tree...and mate, did it ever stain everything!...it'd get all over our skin, and take days to wear off, and would we ever cop it off mum if we got it on our clothes, especially anything light coloured. I managed to "ruin" my best white sundress...she was ropeable!!... :)} *a tip for getting mulberry stains off your skin - rub the stain with a green (unripened) mulberry, it neutralises the redness of the ripe berry...and Silkworms love the leaves...aahhh, another childhood memory...

She gets sheep wool or alpaca wool & then create these natural dyes from mushrooms & lichen. I shared this video of yours with her as more inspiration. The fact that you discovered that the sun can deepen the colour of these natural dyes is awesome.

This is so cool. I've dyed yarn with coffee and tea, (they both come out brown/beige) and I feel like that would blend well with the turmeric and avocado. I've also seen a youtube video using onion skins (boiled) to get a burnt orange shade. I could picture a whole brown-orange-yellow ombre look.

Tannins help the color to last longer so perhaps a red wine dunk first (no wash) and then the avocado with sun exposure would be a hit with staying power over time??? Would be interresting to test :) Other plant dyes like weld and madder usually other tannin rich things than wine are used, but as red wines have tannins... perhaps.... :)

hay just a tip - as an Indian I grew up getting curry stains on a lot of clothes (as we put turmeric in EVERYTHING) my Ma always said don't worry it'll come out with the sun (after a wash of course) and surely it did, the more sun exposure it got after being washed the stains gradually faded. So maybe don't hang out in the sun after washing DIY turmeric stained clothes, hang inside or use a dryer... ;) i liked the avocado the best it was just a pretty colour, would've been nice to see how the beetroot one turned out? next time you could try coffeed green tea, I think that would take really well, I've accidentally stained my work desk with greentea lol
