I had a water meter fitted yesterday! The young plumber came from Barnsley... home of 'Kes' and 'Dickie Bird!' He noticed the drip from the packing gland and fixed it in an instant with a smidgeon of 'jointing compound'... I tipped him a tenner... He did a grrreat job! 👍👍👍

Also , you can push a little bit of boss/ Hawk white paste in with the ptfe tape. The old brass stopcocks were actually made very well, the new ones however are poorly made. The centre screw is only brass plated, and rusts. I now fit BS standard lever valves. Turn your valves on and off twice a year too keep them free from seizing up.

Excellent advice given here in this tutorial . In my situation , it was thankfully down to tightening the gland nut as first suggested , whilst striking a good balance between sufficient tightening and maintaining sensible movement of the tap function . Great advice from a great KZbinr !

Thank you so much for this video, it gave me the confidence to have a go myself, and to know what to do if the first fix didn't work. @@TheDIYGuy1 having said that the pipe still appears damp. There is no obvious dripping from the stopcock itself that seems fixed. I can’t tell if its just condensation or a very minor leak further up.

nice one mate. I am 63 and I have been an industrial and commercial plumber/heating engineer since I started my apprenticeship at 16. The only thing I would point out is that tightening the stuffing gland nut cant tighten on the shaft so that it cant be turned. It works on hot or cold, did it on a 2 inch valve the other day at 93 degrees c. I have seen some idiots trying to do it by wrapping the tape around the gland nut threads instead of the spindle and dont wrap the ptfe tape to tight and it is a great tip in the arsenal of the tradesman or competent diyer

Superb. Thank you. A quick tighten left a tiny drip, but watching your video gave me the confidence to have a go at replacing the PTFE. As you said a bit of challenge getting it to catch the thread again, but once it did - bingo! I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days to see if it needs tightening some more. Once again - thank you!

Don't forget to wrap the tape the right way i.e. clockwise viewed from above otherwise it will try to unwrap itself as you tighten the gland nut up.

Thank you so much. This gave me the knowledge and confidence to focus attention on the Gland nut in my case. A lot of effort getting past all the external limescale build-up over the years, some oil, a file (to restore the nut shape) and persistence with a spanner to eventually free the nut. And I then used your ptfe tape technique to add more packing. Worked beautifully. Leak solved. Very happy. Thank you.
