Thank you so much! I am a 51 yr old female that has had to learn how to fix things on my own in the last few years. I live in an older home which means things are needing to be repaired. I followed your tutorial exactly and fixed my sink for a minimal out of pocket cost. I read a few of the negative comments and total disagree. You did a great job of simplifying the instructions and helping me (which my income doesn't allow for over priced repairs) fix my sink. Thanks again!

Thank you very much for this video. I'm glad you went into enough detail to explain how things were to be taken apart/put back together. The instructions on the new strainers I bought weren't very descriptive so I was left guessing how much putty I needed to apply without ending up with overkill.

Thank you soooo much, this video helped me replace both sink strainers. I called Rotor Rooter and they said they have a flat rate of $65 just to come out to assess the situation, this does not include labor fees. In fact all the plumbers I called had such a 'come out and see' fee. All I needed was to get a $7 mini hack saw to remove that corroded locknut underneath as you suggested. I got all the materials I needed (hacksaw, sink strainers, plumber putty, tailpiece pipes) at Lowe's for around $30. In less than 30 minutes I was done!

Thumbs down because it over-simplified the removal process... this seems to be a 'staged' repair where everything was partially loosened and easy to remove... when I replaced mine, the plumbers putty on the top-side of the old one was so strong and caked on it took about a half hour with a hammer and chisel to get it off

I'm retired but still work for four or five investors I maybe do 4 - 10 of these of week I always snake the line for about four feet with a little home made snake I got as long I got it open one may as well hit it saves coming back later if it got a grinder on line and climbing all those damn stairs..

That's a good point if it has a garbage disposal there to just run a snake though quick. Not enough people run enough water to flush the line out after they use them. It's in our top 5 calls for sure that the trap or shortly after is clogged with food from the garbage disposal.

The most important step seems to be the decision to change the style of locking nut. The old style with rubber seal and paper gasket does not seal well and is brittle. The one used in the replacement looks to evenly apply pressure to the rubber seal. Thank you for showing this in the video and I would suggest pointing out this design in the description/ captions. Thank you again. 🖖

Thank you for the demo, just what I needed! The nut was stubborn as you said it might be, so I sprayed it with vinegar and waited as Jim suggests below, then a few bangs with a hammer freed it. After that, Channel locks were fine for unscrewing the nut, no need for special tools! You just saved me some good money. Thank you.

One bit of advice I would add is: When testing after installation, dont just put a small ammount of water in, fill up the sink past its normal working level to have as much pressure as possible on the seals. If it doesent leak now it never will.

I went to Menards thinking I would have to replace the entire sink. There was a VERY knowledgeable young lady who listened to my problem and told me all I needed to do was replace the sink's drain. Then she told me the real secret, unless you are tight on time, is to soak the drain in vinegar in order to make it much easier to disassemble. Since our sink has 2 bowls we put a cookie sheet to remember not to use the broken side. We let it soak for a full week before trying to disassemble. I took a hammer and long screwdriver and hit the ring underneath twice. The old one broken into 2 pieces. It was easy. Disassembly after soaking in vinegar, 30 seconds. Next I opened the new drain and looked at the accompanying instructions, which were confusing. All I got from them is I needed either plumber putty or silicone. Off to Home Depot I went where I learned the smallest plumber putty was less than 2 bucks compared to over 5 for silicone. Choosing the putty seemed a no brainer. Not sure how to reassemble correctly the first time with the instructions I went to KZbin, found this video at the top of the list and watched it. The video was clear, short and concise. And it uses plummer putty, perfect. It took less than 5 minutes to assemble. AND NO LEAKS. The old one lasted 35 years. I am hopeful this one lasts longer then me. Great video.

Thanks Jim, I followed your advice. Mine wouldn't budge, so I sprayed the threads and nut with vinegar and waited an hour. It still wouldn't budge, so I held the strainer through the holes with pliers from below, and banged the nut until it came free with a hammer. Once it broke free of the calcium or rust it was a snap to unscrew. Thank you!

Any suggestions for my problem? Somehow I cross-threaded the pipe to the bottom of the sink drain. Just lying in my back at that distance I had almost no focus through my crappy progressive lens glasses. Now when I try and remove it it just twists the top of the drain. My wife isn't strong enough to hold it in place while I'm underneath the sink trying to undo it. Any tips on how I might be able to get enough torque on the bottom to remount it properly and screw it down? Thanks for your great video

So I obviously got screwed. Paid a plumber to take out an old JB Welded up disposal and the new basket has had a bucket under it for the past 8 months. Gettin' this fixed tomorrow.

I'm so happy there's KZbin college now before you had to know somebody that knows how to do something & hope that they would tell you.

Thank you SO much! My plumber was going to charge $175. For less than $20 in materials I was able to change this completely by myself. I feel so PROUD! For anyone with the same issue as me...I couldn't get the locknut off with a wrench, so I tapped it with a flat screwdriver until it loosened.

You're welcome. Glad we could help save you some money and give you some confidence to take on this repair. Yes, that is a good point about using a screw driver and hitting it to get the basket nut moving. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment.

What’s up guys, great content I was able to fix my sink but I’m still worried about the bad odors coming from it, a septic smell even after I clean it with commercial strength ageunts so I’m concerned my sewage is overflowing the septic system

Very interesting how you removed the old strainer by placing the channel locks on those protuding tabs , I would have though it required some tool to go entirely around the entire ring Thank you.

Nope. Easier seen than done. I’m calling the plumber. The whole top and bottom kept spinning preventing the nut to loosen and that’s with sons dead weight holding the top in place with a screw attempting to disallow rotation. Ain’t working

Grrrr. In the thumb you're pointing at the locking nut that you didn't use to replace the strainer. That big nut is the trickiest part.

If the big nut doesn't want to come off you use a hammer and screwdriver to get it off. Hacksaw WTF?
