I'll tell you a story. I met a Russian girl back in the late 80's, she was a friend of a co-worker who came over when they started letting the Jewish people emigrate. She knew this girl from Moscow and invited her to come on a tourist visa. This girl overstayed her visa, she didn't want to go back. The USSR was falling apart and it wasn't the best of times. Anyway, this girl, she asked if I would marry her so she could get a green card. I said sure, what did I care. Wasn't any skin off my nose. So we went and got married at the court house and together we filed the paperwork for her to get a Green Card. She was living with her girl friend and I was living by myself. I went over to her apartment to have her sign something from Immigration and we drank some wine and somehow we ended up sleeping together. She was working as an au pair, making good money, enough to more than keep her half of the place up. Next thing I know she moved in with me. We'd already been married almost 18 months. It was funny. When she got the Green card I said,' well, that's done, whatcha gonna do?' She just smiled and said, " have some children". Lol! That was 30 years ago. Both kids graduated from college and are working and have left home. But we're still here, kicking it.......

I'm from Odessa and I worked for one of such agencies... Remember the guy saying he wrote to 10 girls and they all replied? That's because it's a rule, a message from a man cannot be left unresponded. But in most cases it's not the girl herself replying but someone like me, a "translator" that has several girls to write instead of. The women are mostly there for money because they get paid for messages, chat time, and any presents are converted into money by the agency itself. Even the date, if there is one, is a cash grab and both the girl and the translator get money from like the restaurant that has special menus with higher prices for that. Women will have lied on the website about their age, occupation, family. They'd have children and a husband who knows about this side hustle. I went there trying to do some honest work and there was none... I didn't last long, it is all such a scam.

I met a woman from Mykolaiv (near Odessa) through an agency. We had many video chats and a few letters. I came to like her a lot and traveled to meet her. I spent the better part of 2 weeks there with her. She spoke perfect English, so there was no need for a translator. But her female cousin, similar age, was always with us, like a chaperone. I paid for all meals as men are expected to do, bought her several things, was convinced to get her mother something nice when I met her, etc. When the time came at the end of my trip for us to spend some time alone, she mysteriously had to have surgery to remove her appendix. I returned home without seeing her again. No more video calls after that, just short texting online, with her discussing her money troubles because of the 'surgery'. I realized the whole thing had been a scam. I hired a Ukrainian investigator who found out that she was married and worked at as an agency translator (not the agency where I met her), whereas I thought she was a hairdresser (could have been both). And the boy I met who I was told was her nephew, was probably her son. I was both devastated and heartbroken. It was really hard for me to process how convincingly she was able to lie, and that her whole family (cousin, husband, mother, children) were in on it. It felt like I was in a movie. Looking back, I think I'm lucky nothing worse happened to me.

I live in a city where AFA does a tour. I speak the language and have lived there for years. A little known fact is you can sign up for just the socials without doing the tour. I inquired about it just for the fun and the company kept finding ways to keep me from going. I finally gave up. Not long after one year, she dropped him like a hot potato, said she married him to get the hell out of the Philippines and took off with everything she was able get from him. The problem here is...most women, especially when they are younger, also indulge in the fantasy of securing a really hot guy...so they will not go out with an average or less type of guy, even if the women are also below average in looks!...The eventuality is, the not so hot ladies will eventually lower their sights, in order to marry and have kids. I have a Colombian girlfriend, but I am fluent in Spanish and we are close in age. This is all about showing the honeymoon phase, but has nothing to do with reality. It's all fishy... A distant family member did this & what a huge mistake. She was Slavic, what these girls are, he was in the military. He brought her to the U.S. & were married. He went off to war & she went off looking for someone else while he was gone. She did become a citizen then went to school free, to become a nurse. A few years later she broke it to him his child wasn't his & that it was all just to come over to the U.S. to start a new life. They divorced & she took the 6yr old child he though was his. Trust me when I say- this broke him. These are just scams & many want to become citizens to bring their family to the U.S. A good 70% are buying their time till they get citizenship & can figure a way out, but until then, they will make do. The man will pay for his decision with his wallet & his heart, sad they believe it's real.

I like that lady and really admire her for what she has done with her life. Any self-respecting man should be proud to have her as his wife and go out of his way to make sure she knows that every day. Becoming a nurse is a long, tough course at the best of times, but I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for her. She not only had to master everything in the nurses training, but also to do that with the language barrier she faced. Her determination to succeed is beyond belief. Seems to me we need more people like her here in North America. I'm from Canada but the same applies here as well as the USA. I wish I could someday meet her in person so I could tell her how proud she should be of her accomplishments and congratulate her for her success. I'd give a lot to have a chance to sit down with her and try to understand her motives and the extreme courage it took for her to pack up and leave everything she had grown up with. She had to leave her parents, other family and friends, country, culture, language, basically everything she knew, and travel half way around the world, all in the hope of finding a new and better life for herself. I wish all the best for her and hope she has a long and very happy life.
