It was WISE that you resisted the temptation to pet or hand-feed them. Definitely improved their likelihood of survival in the wild. When I've helped orphaned squirrels in the past, I wondered if they recognized me by sight, scent, or my voice. But they could definitely differentiate me from other humans.
@orangebeagle30683 жыл бұрын
Was it wise? When I volunteered at a wildlife animal shelter, we would bottle feed the baby squirrels until they hit a certain age where they naturally got wary of us and started to hiss at us. I don’t know if this was because we didn’t spend a lot of time with them outside of feeding though.

In florida we have netting around our patios and near that patio was a tree and once a mom squirrel got stuck in there so we kept leaving out food for her and when she got free she would come back often. Then she suddenly stopped and we thought she got bored or something. A month later she comes back with two babies!!! After a while the mom either died or stopped coming but her babies recognized all 10 of my family members and would never be scared of us!! I'd play with the neighborhood kids in my backyard and when I would see them they would watch me play with the other kids and when the kids would leave the bbabies would come and chill with me on the grass next to their tree :) it was awesome

Red squirrels are real cutie-pies. In the UK, the native Red population has been ousted in many places by the 'import' American Grey, which are a lot bigger. There's a Red Squirrel sanctuary reserve in Formby, Lancashire ( near Liverpool ) with pathways through it so you can wander around, watch them and feed them with the nuts you can buy at the entrance.
