When I was little, we "acquired" a couple of horses. I learned later that they had been abandoned and my mom rescued them. We were poor, but we never went hungry, and neither did those horses. People thought we were rich because we had horses, little did they know, lol. She traded guitar lessons and babysitting for vet visits and hoof trims. Of course, back then, there were open fields and lots of wooded areas where we could ride and they could feed. I spent many summer days in the woods. God, I miss that. Now all those areas are built up. Horses are such amazing creatures --- they are so much more intelligent than we give them credit for. Growing up with them taught me a lot about trust, healing, and love. God bless this woman and her crew.

Very sadly this Judeo-Christian belief that "Man has dominion over the Earth" is at the heart of this disposable attitude...that is a mere belief not grounded in quantum physics. I saw he had a deer fly on his flank and I brushed it away. I was immediately his best buddy, and he hugged me with that bug old head over my shoulder. He approached my mother in her wheelchair and nuzzled her for some petting, too. As we were leaving and I put Mom's wheelchair into the back seat, the horse tried to get into the car to go home with us. He was like a big old friendly puppy. Speaking of puppies, my friend has two miniature horses, a stallion and a three-week-old colt, who will sit in your lap given half-a-chance. Her two mini mares are too dignified for such behavior, though they do want their peppermint treats and carrots and apples.

Not all of them bounce back. My niece has a horse who was quite severely abused and is now severely traumatized. She rescued the mare and has been trying to gain her trust for several years now but, so far, it's not really working. This horse is so traumatized by what she's been through that she's lost ALL trust in humans whatsoever. The only way to catch her for anything is for the vet to come out and dart her with a tranquilizer gun. Even the vet says to euthanize the horse but my niece is a bit of an animal whisperer so I think the mare will come around eventually. She's also rescued an abused cow so the cow and horse live together. She's gained the trust of the cow. That cow will do anything for apples. LOL It's a former dairy cow that was listed for slaughter due to bad feet gotten from standing her entire life on concrete in her own poop, just to provide us with milk. The industrial dairy system in the US is appalling that way.

I would. I have one in my barn as we speak whose owner, a friend of mine, allowed to become literally skeletal under his blanket. I found out why she never took his blanket off and when he developed a hoof infection from neglect, I seized my chance and her horse. We still speak, she feeds him in the morning and brings food by each week but if it hadn't been for me and my husband, her horse would have died within weeks, no lie at all. He was 30 when I brought him here and is 33 years old now and looks fantastic. When I confronted her about his health, she tried to give me a noncommittal "Oh, he always gets that way in the winter", to which I answered "and you never bothered to readjust his diet??". Poor boy has nubs for teeth and she was feeding him whole grains. He can't chew them and can't digest them. She claims to have a "degree in stable management" yet had no idea what beet pulp was. Honestly, if she's this apathetic about him, why keep him? As it is, he has essentially become my horse as I have physical custody of him and provide most of his food, daily care, and medical/farrier care. She always says she'll pay me back, etc., but I highly doubt it. It always seems that horse people come in two varieties: responsible owners and flakes who make endless excuses.
