Yeah a big issue was Dredd itself is a bit of an obscure comic book. An issue with the movie was also lack of comedic relief. This movie was a good adaptation but not really a great movie.

Karl was great. He portrayed Dredd perfectly, but Olivia's portrayal of Anderson wasn't impressive. Though it's not entirely her fault as the writers got the character wrong by making her soft, scared, and humanizing.

This movie lost money. You can never just compare the production budget to the box office numbers, there are so many other costs that aren't taken into account. A good rule of thumb is to multiply the production budget by 1.5 (sometimes more for larger films). This movie needed 50-60 million to just break even, if not more.

Bear in mind that the script was written by Alex Garland, meaning it was tight and faithful to the comic, great acting talent and a genuine attempt to stay true to the gear and equipment that Dredd/Judges use. I believe had the studio used the budget that had been previously used in the Stallone debacle, this version would have faired significantly better.

I never went to see this movie at the theatre because of Stallone's Dredd. After seeing online years later, I think I've watched it 10 times. It is that good. Dredd never taking his helmet off was impressive. Also Dredd never breaking from trainer/evaluator no matter what was great writing. Such an underated movie. I want more of this but I doubt they could get the whole team again.

Olivia is in her early 30s and Karl turns 50 next month, on par with Stallone's Dredd, I think Stallone was late 40s. No reason they couldn't get the same two actors. Neither Olivia or Karl are as famous as they should be, I recon they would do it for the right price. I've seen Dredd 10 + times were I watched it and probably 10 + times were I put in on in the background. Its a brilliant popcorn movie and hands down the the best version. If you like Judge Dredd do a search for Judge Minty a fan made movie, its pretty good, terrible special effects but still good.

First comment I've seen that mentions that the stink of the first Dredd tainted the second. I wasnt interested in this one for that very reason, either. As other comments have said, they should have marketed it more, and some of that should have been focused on showing how it was nothing like the first.

Long time back I was an ordinary citizen in a Judge Dredd live role-playing game at a convention. I got interrogated by two Judges who were trying to solve a gang-related case. I confessed to everything and eventually they arrested me just to get me to shut up. Good times.

Dredd is so good, we need another one with Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby returning. Centering the narrative around Anderson was a great call. It kept Dredd as an enigma, this purely Lawful Neutral force. The way the world is portrayed as well, there was so much "show don't tell" in the presentation.

I've already said how much I love this movie many times. But I just truly watched when Anderson was at the point of pull the trigger or not. She did an amazing job at keeping her expressions under control during that scene, she didn't even blink when she pulled the trigger or flinch at all physically. And the way she held the stare off camera really brought that moment through. The entire team that created this film needs to have a reunion and make part number two. (Except for the marketing and distribution team...they sucked.)

He showed mercy when he gave them a chance to disperse. They were all criminals, and it'd have been well within his authority to just execute them with no warning. He also shows mercy later on when dealing with those two kids. He showed it earlier when giving that vagrant a chance to leave instead of being arrested. Hell, he arguably showed mercy when offering to spare that criminal's life in the beginning of the film, sentencing him to life imprisonment instead of death if he let the hostage go and surrendered. He's quite merciful. The thing is, he only extends that olive branch ONCE. If you're stupid enough to refuse it, what happens afterward is on you. As to the second half of your statement, you are absolutely correct. Once he commits to a certain course of action, he follows through without hesitation and doesn't second-guess himself or his choices. He may ruminate on his actions after the fact, but only in a time and place where it's appropriate to do so, at least in the comics.

They did have a sequel planned, but it didn't get greenlit due to disappointing box office on this film 🤬. And they even had the plot chosen - Dredd *vs* democracy advocates… [From a Dredd comic book series] They planned a very morally ambiguous film that would divide audiences and make them question the "Make my Day" philosophy of Dredd. Dredd would be against democracy because _"it just wouldn't work in the Megacities"_ with the citizens being like they are… needing to be controlled for the good of a society barely hanging on. After all Dredd was originally conceived as a British satire on the American Dirty Harry viewpoint … not a glorification of it. It's a bit like how the Punisher himself said that he himself is not a role model for police, he's a terrorist vigilante. And that if police wanted a role model they should look to Captian America… [the writers put that in because it turns out Punisher idolatry is rampant throughout Real US police forces]. So the audience would be presented with the moral implications of the fact that Dredd really is a fascist… just not a bigoted one. It's a little bit like the Starship Troopers film. And it would have been fascinating… Especially the response.

Just like the British satiring the Americans way of living, which is strange. Who are they to judge given their own history? Same with us watching how Dredd deals with the environment he lives in. Makes for good conversation and an excellent movie, but as I said ultimately futile as we cannot imagine or perceive living in said environment. Which is why I kind of hate those movies that make us want to question how people in an extreme violent environment try to function. We have a habit of comparing ours to theirs but in actuality it’s a child comparing their lives to an adults. I just want another damn good movie like this that shows Dredd working from day to day. Great movie. I just wish people would pay more attention to the delicious details, like how all the technology is quasi-1990's - note the monochrome LCD screen on Dredd's gun. Also - and nobody ever seems to get this - the moral of the story is that in the end, it's questionable whether anything that Dredd did in the whole movie mattered or made a difference; from the first chase scene where Dredd's actions cause the death of a civilian, to the end of the movie where Peach Trees is free from one gang, but another may move in next week.

In 1980 the technology presented here seemed futuristic. Despite being set over 100 years in the future, the technology advancements were always fairly basic, including robots that were very primitive looking. Dredd often remarks how there's no end to his work.

@@FallenOne669 ultimately in both Parker and Wayne's case the reason for that is the motivation of the masked character. That motivation comes from the lives and tragedies and mistakes of Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker. From what i understand of Dredd. His motivation comes from his belief in Order itself, in his conceptualization of Justice in the form of the Judges, thus he is Judge Dredd because he is Judge Dredd. More accurately, the motivation comes from not something personal but something indoctrinated. So you could see more in the concept of a Knight, who is bestowed the title. A created title of distinction that comes with certain social baggage.

Ever see Band of Brothers? Lieutenant(later Captain) Spiers develops quite the reputation of being a badass. Going into any situation with no fear whatsoever. Also has tales of him just gunning down a group of prisoners after offering them a smoke. He never denies it nor confirms it. Only lets how he is perceived stand. But a little secret he tells later on is that he just accepts that he is already dead. If he doesn't worry about that, then he has nothing left to fear going into any battle. I think Dredd has much the same attitude, but also like Spiers, he still cares for those under his command. He might be reckless for himself but not those under him. Both Dredd and Spiers respect that each Judge has their way of doing their job. They don't expect others to behave the same way, but won't discourage it either. What is important is getting the mission accomplished and making sure the other side does all the dying or surrendering.

It's shocking how this movie isn't even a Cult Hit as people have seen it and know how amazing it is. Everyone has been begging that someone pick up the ball and do a sequel either as a series or movie and it's such a shame that the company that put it out had no faith in it.

but it is a cult hit. There was a Amazon ranking a couple of years ago where users voted for their favorite instant cult movies. And Dredd came out winner and pitched itself against the likes of Fight Club and others

Great movie. If I had one critique it would be to use practical effects or squibs for the bullet wounds rather than digital blood spatters. It would have heightened the coolness factor even more.

Bit problem with this movie (and really unfortunate) was that The Raid came out not very long before this, and Dredd just seemed like a blatant rip off in comparison. The Raid really all-in'd on the grittiness and brutal close quarters combat in a realistic setting, while Dredd's sci-fi setting made it pale in comparison. That's not to say Dredd is a bad movie. It just had bad release timing.

Dredd even predates the term "cyberpunk". It was among the first cyberpunk media without actually having a genre to fit in. The comics are even more set in the genre as the movie is.

Not even realy cyberpunk. More Industrial Dystopia than Cyberpunk. When people think Cyberpunk they generally think hyper-tech Implants, or AI robots running around everywhere. Dredd's universe is more of a Collapse of Society in a near lack of 'homeliness' Industrial lifestyle.

One of my favourite bits in this movie (and there area a lot of great, great parts of it) is that Dredd consistently announces what he's holding or using. "Stun grenade." "Respirators." "Basic field dressing." Just like the comics, where readers might not understand immediately what hi-tech gizmo Dredd's currently interacting with. I'm sure the Lawgiver's ammo selection being voice-activated grew from this necessity to communicate what Dredd was thinking about to the readers!

Funny enough it wasn't as if they were unjustifed anywhere in this movie I could see for use of lethal force. Dredd even gave them the chance to walk away. That's a pretty good deal.

This movie was a masterpiece of modern action cinema. Sadly it was bad advertisement that made it flop. In germany there was practically zero commercials for it or viral advertisement. The performance of the actors was flawless, the action intense and the cgi sparse enough. There should have been a sequel.

ive never seen this movie and know nothing about judge dread. on thing i remember about this movie from back in 2012 was that it was leaving cinemas. i never saw any adverts or promotions for it. now ive watched three or four clips on youtube of this movie and im convinced i need to watch it. the movie looks great and i like the tone it has, it just feels like a bad ass action movie so that shouldve been easy as hell to market but they failed somehow.
