Something you didn't mention but I loved was the reveal by Aslan that Reepicheep and the other talking mice are actually direct descendants of the mice that chewed off the ropes binding Aslan after the White Witch killed him in the first book, and that they gained the ability to talk BECAUSE of that act. It's a really nice touch!

Personally i don't like the idea of spanish actors for a different reason, as any serious historian could argue that it's a part of the spanish black legend, that is, a tendency in anglo saxon culture to portray spanish people negatively because of propaganda made during the reign of elizabeth i.

When I saw that this was newest episode, I was so freaking excited because I was OBSESSED with this movie when I was 13. Mainly because I thought it was a good movie but also because I had a crush on the actor that played Edmund. I even watched the movie w/ the cast commentary and the behind the scenes making of it. I like the darker feel of the movie as it feels like a natural progression of age; it reminds me a little of the 3rd & 4th Harry Potter films in that way. I have such fond memories about these movies and I haven't watched Prince Caspian in so long so I'm going to have to now. I also really love the Powerpuff Girl references 😂 Edit: I do remember that they filmed the scene with Susan teaching the Narnians archery before battle at some point, and Caspian coming up & they have some sort of dialogue that was suppose to kind of establish they liked each other or something similar but was cut.

I’m going up on my summer vacation days towards the cold season like when it’s becoming late August early September and the temperatures are getting a little more colder. They would play this. It was also a movie that would just play on the weekends on the Disney Channel channel. Especially around Christmas time, I’ve lost track how many times I’ve watched it probably somewhere in range of a few hundred times. I love everything about this series so I have to read the other novels. And this series is something. I also have sentimental value with as I would regularly quite frequently. Talk about this and David Copperfield with my grandfather. God rest his soul I miss him dearly, though he’s more of a Lord of the rings fan I very fondly remember me and my Poppy having the most entertaining debates about who is better J.R.R. Tolkien or CS Lewis!? Sorry Poppy, but I will still stand on the hill of CS Lewis! For life !

I have missed these. I'm going to be honest I really much preferred this film over it's predecessor, though that might just be because of the battles? There's still a few nitpicks like the casual sexism, Susan of course has to get the hots for Caspian because he's Ben Barnes, Aslan testing the kid's belief even though they know he's real because they've met him, etc. I would have to assume Caspian isn't 26 in the film though lol. With Peter vs the bullies, they were certainly looking to start a fight. These kids had to go through puberty twice. Good reading of Peter though.

You made an error at 0:21. He was not English. CS Lewis was actually born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) and grew up there until he was sent to boarding school in England. He did get a degree in Oxford which I imagine is where the confusion comes from and if you just see the word British I know some people can jump to conclusions. We have a square dedicated to him in Belfast and there are trails you can walk through and there's a reading room in one of the universities (Queen's which Lewis' father attended). It's an easy mistake to make if you're not sure about the difference between English, British and Irish but it is quite a serious mistake to make. I know you probably don't read the comments, especially since you posted this last week, but I really enjoy your videos and I know that sometimes mistakes can be made while researching.

I'm pretty sure Peter and Susan being "too old" to come back was an allegory for the time. Back when these books were written, it was looked down upon to be into fairytales, roleplaying, fantasy, etc if you were older than 13(?) and not a "grandparent" (basically under 60) c.S Lewis actually mentions this in a dedication thing to his goddaughter (niece? Granddaughter?) Lucy, stating she had grown too old to enjoy the story he'd written, but hoped she would read it again when she became "old enough" for fairytales again. Kind of a "coming of age" thing for the time.

"It's good to grow up and leave children storries behnd ... but don't row up into a hussy who likes long hairs and parties !" yeah, yeah I doubt Lewis had any idea of what he would writte must later when he was writing Prince Caspain. And I'm aware the sexism and moralism is nothing nothing exceptionnal for the times but it still hits a bit different for a modern reader, y'know ?
@Thedarkbunnyrabbit

@@s.m.2523 Susan's story wasn't that. It was actually that Susan drifted from the 'faith', so to speak, which CS Lewis himself did in his own life. And then he came back to it. CS Lewis confirmed that Susan would too, but that such a book would be more grown up than what he'd want to write, so he encouraged others to write their own ideas of how it would go.

I think where they were going with Susan is similar to what they did with Peter: like her brother, she grew into a woman in Narnia. She was known as a desirable queen with numerous suitors. She spent years being courted by grown men who had their shit together. Then suddenly she was a little girl again being hit on by little boys who could barely talk straight. Susan already had a difficult time relating with her peers before Narnia. Afterward, it was made so much worse. Caspian would have been appealing to her compared to normal boys. Accepting her reality is part of her arc. She says as much to Lucy when asked whether she’s pleased to be back “I was just getting used to not being in Narnia.” And her further comments imply that she’s afraid to settle in because she hasn’t any idea how long it’ll last this time. So I think the film makers were trying to further explore how disruptive their Narnian adventure had actually been. Especially on the oldest children. Likely why Aslan told them it was their last trip.

@@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 I think the point, as seen in other children's stories, is that the more we grow up the harder it is to accept the whimsical fantasy of places like Narnia as "logic" clouds our ability (for most of us anyway) to imagine. If I may point to the Bible, Jesus does say that we should come to God like a child, open to believing and accepting without cynicism. As a Christian allegory/inspired story and in usual kids story fashion that could be why Peter and Susan are deemed too old by the end.

I actually thought that casting an older Caspian was a clever choice. I mean, Peter is struggling with knowing he was an adult *and* a king, and now he's just a teenager. For him, Caspian is the inexperienced one and so he doesn't trust in his decisions and fights with him all the time. Meanwhile, Caspian sees these supposed kings and queens as just teens and so doesn't fully trust them himself.

Even though in my country the age of consent is 15 - so I'm not prudish about teenagers being sexually active - I still think it should be only btween people who are close to each other in age, not a full adult and a teenager. There's a huge difference between a 16/20 relationship and a 16/40. O_O As for the "changing the body" part, that's just a requirement for actors and actresses in general. Sometimes they need to gain muscles, somethimes they need to gain fat, and sometimes they need to starve themselves. @@Eris_Norregard You're right that it's the industry expectation, and it's one that when people say the expectation should be changed, I agree with them. (Obviously I have no power there, personally, so my support helps no one but you know) We applaud the drastic ways people change their bodies for a role, and it is impressive, but it's also dangerous in a way that feels not worth it. Starving and dehydrating yourself so your muscle definition or your ribcage shows up on camera or whatever the role calls for, it's just as bad to me as pop idols who forgo sleep until they pass out from exhaustion on stage and do drugs just to stay awake. I'd rather actors with muscles less rippling and actresses with bigger waistlines and pop stars hitting fewer cities on tour than any of these people accidentally ending up dead or permanently disabled for it, you know? The shorter version: I think it's taken too far. but yeeahhhh more to to Twilight specific point, it was already weird that these 40-year-old moms were into what we all assumed was a 20-year-old playing a teenager. Then you find out he was a teenager playing a teenager, and suddenly it's police sirens in my brain. And that being what the movie was AIMING for, thus intentionally putting a teen boy in this super sexualized weird position, is gross and irresponsible. P.S. what country are you from?

Ok but Susan's character is "smart person who thinks they are always right" it's pretty boring and one dimensional, but no worse than the other kids. Also not nearly as plot relevant a characterization, until the last book. This is mostly because her "forgetting" Narnia in The Last Battle is supposed to be a representation of C.S. Lewis' own relationship with Christianity. He believed as a child, stopped believing as an young adult because he decided it was silly, then converted back to Christianity. This might also explain why Susan seems more blank than the other characters: she's a self-insert.

The only reason we're lead to believe Susan is being excluded from "Narnia heaven" is that the other "friends of Narnia" say so...but they don't have the full information (that they're dead and she isn't because she wasn't in the railway accident) until the last page of the book. By preserving the mystery Lewis gave the impression that Susan is permanently lost, when internal logic would indicate otherwise.

You’re actually correct about Aslan not being an allegory for Jesus in the Bible, but is like actually Jesus in the books. C. S. Lewis explains it as a “supposal” basically a “what if” scenario of, if there was another world that was not like ours at all, how might Jesus be in that world. The best example I can think of is Abraham Lincoln in “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer” doesn’t represent Abraham Lincoln, he’s not an allegory of Old Abe, he just IS Abraham Lincoln but the “what if” version that deals with vampires.

Honestly, I have a deeper appreciation and passion for fairytales (and stories in general) now as an adult than I did as a child. Heck, stories were used as a method for me to better understand Jesus and The Bible. When you look at the Bible as one big story (or series with multiple seasons) God as the world builder and what would happen if the characters were given free rage to shape things and what would happen if someone else corrupted these creations, severing the connection between them and the Author, who does everything He can to reconnect with His creations/children.

@@danielled8665 Maybe. Then again, my teenage niece once asked me what I'd do if I found myself back in high school with my adult knowledge, and the first thing out of my mouth was, "Set fire to the place ... and okay, I guess I'd pull the fire alarm first." I immediately thought of how frustrating it would be to see all the ways the adults in my religious high school were harming kids in the name of God. (To choose two examples, a large number of boys joined the military for religious reasons and died in Afghanistan, and I'm just going to say "everyone knew who the gay kid was in 2001" and leave it there.) It bothered me as a kid; it enrages me as an adult. The Pevensies were leaders in Narnia, accustomed to power, to responsibility, and to being obeyed. Being back on their child-bodies, seeing adults being foolish or greedy or just plain infuriating, and knowing no one would listen to them because they were kids ... yeah, I'd probably go straight for arson.

Besides making sense from a "Mediterranean pirates = ancestral Telmeranes" POV, I think the implications of Narnians being magically-bound to have human leaders is actually a good outcome of the casting/costuming decision. I honestly loved Edmund in this movie, just because I liked to see him being competent and I really got the vibe that he lived a life as a king (with his easily manipulating Miraz into agreeing to the fight and his repeatedly-demonstrated skill with the sword). He was the one who I most got this impression from; Peter still struck me as a teenager trying to be king, but Edmund had a real "I've been king, I'm rolling with the punches, this is fine" energy that I loved. When I first saw the movie, I didn't think much of Susan, but I liked her more and more on rewatches when I noticed how effective a fighter she is and how she's close to Edmund's level of "I believe this person used to be an adult ruler".

I got the impression his uncle was on the throne so they wait till Kaspian gets to the "appropriate age" to be the king but that was of course just a cover up for Miraz who waited till he has a legitimate heir to just kill off his nephew. It also brought interesting dynamic cause then Peter would be around Kaspian's age and they saw each other as sort of a "rivals".

William the Conqueror was 11th century (kite shields and dane axes and head-to-foot chainmail). I feel like the whole weird "Aslan party sequence" in the book kinda makes more sense if you know more about C.S. Lewis as a person. First of all, when he was young he went to a horrible school where he was bullied a lot, so I think the sequence where Aslan turns a bunch of schoolboys into pigs was his way of getting literary revenge. (He does this sort of thing again in "The Silver Chair.") Second, in addition to being a big Jesus fan, he was also a HUGE fan of Greek & Norse mythology, which is why Bacchus just randomly shows up for Aslan's party. And yes, that does make about as much sense as Father Christmas's appearance in the first book. Personally, I don't think the idea of Lion Jesus turning a bunch of nasty schoolboys into pigs is, uh... _great._ But I must admit, the idea of Lion Jesus having a crazy party with Bacchus sounds freaking awesome. Do those things really add anything to the story, or even make the slightest bit of narrative sense? Not really, but who cares? Lewis basically just did whatever the hell he felt like, and y'know, you kinda got to respect that. (Meanwhile Tolkien is off to the side having multiple strokes because Narnia's worldbuilding makes _no sense at all._ )

@@elsie8757 True true! I do prefer to think the pig transformation was only temporary to teach them a lesson. I have to say, though, the guy in HAHB was a bit more than just a bratty schoolboy; he was a spoiled adult prince who straight up invaded a country because the woman he liked rejected him. So somehow Aslan turning him into a donkey feels more justified. (Also I might not be remembering right, but wasn't there a threat that he might turn back into a donkey if he didn't behave himself?)

@@Dachusblot Yes, that is true. But on the other hand, Rabadash had already been thoroughly defeated and humiliated by that point, and his dad stated outright that he was on his own when it came to invading Narnia, so no backup would be coming from him. So it's not like he was much of a threat anymore, and was basically reduced to throwing temper tantrums by the time the donkey transmogrification set in. In fact, when this plan was originally being pitched to the Tisroc, it was even agreed that if things went wrong they could blame his actions on "the impetuosity of youth". So if his excuse for invading Narnia and trying to kidnap one of its queens was essentially "boys will be boys", I suppose it's only fair that he be punished in the same manner that bratty schoolboys have been known to be at this point in the series. (Sure this book takes place before Prince Caspian chronologically, but it was written after it, so the Telmarine schoolboys being turned into pigs would've been a precedent).
