The thing about "the colony" having more space but the cities seeming as if not more crowded, could be excused by saying it's population is situated in a similar manner to Australia now; meaning that most of the population is along or near the coast, with the outback having sparse permanent human settlements.

Oh no, I was looking forward to this review so much (because I haven't actually watched the movie) but then the warning came up right away :( Thank you, however, for adressing this issue... You can't imagine how much I appreciate that. Too many content creators nowadays don't care putting up warnings for things like epilepsy and the likes, and it's much more common than one might think. Well, I guess it's a good thing then that I decided to not watch this movie in cinemas back when it came out! Greetings from Germany ♥

The fact that Kate Beckinsale's character spends the entire move with her hair down drives me crazy! I am a woman with long hair and I personally can't stand in in my face which is actually why I have it long so I can put it in a bun or ponytail. Just watch the action scenes, besides making it easier to switch her out with a body double it is always in her face! How does she see? They should have been able to kill her right away because she was blinded by all of her hair! At 5:06 you can see that her entire face is covered, there is no way in a real fight she would have know were everyone was.
@alastair8527 жыл бұрын
There's actually a reason for that, which i learned from pro wrestling. long loose hair makes movements more dynamic, particularly strikes to the head, the swinging hair giving the illusion of a much harder impact.
@jamiea96347 жыл бұрын
Oh I understand that and flowing hair can be seen as sexier, it is just something that as a person with long hair bugs me like nails on a chalkboard. That is probably more about my hang ups then anything else. I know they also probably did it to help differentiate between the two female leads, I agree with The Dom should have made one blond or something.
@heatherg19494 жыл бұрын
not that i'm really arguing with you, having long hair down from an irl fighting standing probably presents many fighting weaknesses. and any obstruction or possible distraction is not optimal... but can you not see through your hair? most of the time it's like the bloopers in the original mario cart, yeah it's in the way but honestly you can see through/around it i can comb my hair so i look like cousin it and still see
@Sarcasmhime4 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. I've had long hair my whole life and I tie it up whenever I'm doing anything more strenuous than a casual walk. I'm so tired of women in action scenes with long flowing hair when that would make no goddamn sense. But men don't think hair tied up is sexy, so of course that usually takes precedence. It makes me so happy on the rare occasions when you see a character tie up her hair before fighting.
@uknownada4 жыл бұрын
If she doesn't have long hair, how are you supposed to know she's the girlfriend? It's like in Venom when they casted a lady with short hair to play a character with short hair but gave her an ugly wig so you're not confused.

at the 8:13 mark, the plan that the Colony has space the Federation could use, but it looks more crowded than the Federation; that's why the army of robots was necessary, to kill everyone in the Colony and free up all that space for Federation residents. I did love the visuals on this movie, the idea of building up since theirs nowhere else to go, the tetris looking buildings, the magnetized freeways so one can drive above and below the roads, the hand phones, fun stuff.

You said from 9:14 on, "What's very interesting about this film is that it seems to take a lot of influence from other adaptations of Phillip K. Dick's books, like Minority Report and Blade Runner. Sort of an amalgamation adaptation of adaptations." Personally, I think this sounds appropriate for an adaptation of Phillip Dick novel. There were more than a few elements and themes that he included in his stories. Different forms of government in no way connected to our own today, the appearances of some kind of representation of god and sometimes an anti-god character, aliens who know more about the plot than you do and are not very helpful, reality degradation, and so on. Adaptations all borrowing from other adaptations to create common movie themes and images in Phillip Dick adaptions sounds homage-like to me. Awesome reviews as always, all three of them.

I was hoping you'd reference the scene where Quaid and Mac quote the book: "An illusion, no matter how convincing, is sill just an illusion." Did you also notice that Quaid is reading a James Bond novel on the Fall? Film Brain put it best when he noted that the original smartly serves as both an example and parody of the over-the-top mindless action flick since part of the plot involves a fantasy centered around such things. This means that Quaid has paid Rekall to be Arnie or it's that he really IS Arnie and so would do just these things. Adds more fuel to the ambiguity.

If I ever wanted to see a more faithful adaptation of the short story it would have been David Cronenberg's Unmade script of 'Total Recall'. Nonetheless, I do consider the setting for this film as a poor futuristic recreation of Australian colonization over British rule, not to mention as an Australian I'm offended they did nothing to hinder this film with anything Australian in it. You could've just had Earth and nothing else in it and it wouldn't have made a difference. Thanks for all three videos Dom, keep up the great work.

The hound of the basket villas episode would be great aswell but I think this one's better asyou've got a more modern film to compare it with aswell. If you could do a couple episodes on this them would be great. Btw keep up the brilliant content as your videos really got me back into reading (I'm 16 so consider it a achievement).

I hadn't read the books or seen the 1990 film when I first watched this and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, same as you said that the Arnie flick felt like quintessential 80s cheese this to me felt like quintessential 2000s action flick. I do think I like the older one better now because theres just something about Arnie back in the day I just find too entertaining. Still enjoyed this one tho, Farrel did a good job as a action lead in a dystopia-ish situation, and Kate Beckingsale and Jessica Biel just made the film for me, I admit that if recall existed id have skipped the whole spy thing and just got the fake memories of them fighting over me, seems like a much better and less convoluted fake memory

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to blame the reboot's failure _entirely_ on not having Arnie. The lack of his star power and expectation-setting...ness sure didn't help matters, but this version has other issues. The biggest one I can see is all the details and plot elements hanging around for no apparent reason. For instance, people can easily accept that Earth is oppressing Mars, but changing the setting to Britain and Australia opens up all sorts of unneeded questions that either aren't resolved or aren't resolved in a way that adds anything beyond closing up a plot hole they made themselves. This isn't a problem if the change has enough positives on its own, but I can't see _anything_ it adds other than making it easier to turn the story into a bad American Revolution allegory (which doesn't fit with the rest of the story at all) and justifying the normal gravity and white casts.

Yes, I know, late to the party here and I've seen this review a couple of times. One of the things that really bugs me about this film vs. the ARnie film is that there's no longer any reason, AT ALL, for Hauser to become Quaid. That was done because Martian /psychics/. :) The whole deal with that was because Quoato could sense a spy incoming and the only way around that was to erase Hauser. Granted, that kinda falls down a little too, if you think about it too hard, but there it is. In the new one, without there being the psychic angle, no more reason to do that and any old assassin would do.

I would say that reason the reboot did not work was not because they tried to make an Arni film without Arni. Its because they tried to make a Verhoeven film without Verhoeven. They guy has a unique aesthetic and Dutch humor that can be both subtle and over the top at the same time. Plus he is a batter filmmaker than most. That is why the original worked. mormegil231 the future cityscape reminds me of blade runner 2049 and ghost in the shell (2017) i robot (2004).

BL 2049 was amazing and also more slow and less action based. GitS (2017) was much more like this one. Lots of action and really bad.

Oh good I'm not the only one who thought the two women looked WAY to similar! You can easily get them confused especially during the actions scenes!

I've seen this set of videos several times, and in-between viewings I still keep forgetting that the remake exists.

I really hope the people who designed the visuals off this movie goes on to make some fantastic sci fi movies. Cause this is in my opinion among the best sci fi city designs I’ve ever seen, and it’s a pity it’s wasted on a forgettable story.
