Relative pitch is not a gift but something you learn. Also picking up songs is not about perfect or relative pitch. Picking up a melody is just recognising the distance between the notes. So for example you played A B C or C E F you’d get the same melody in a different key. This doesn’t require you to identify the name of the notes which is what relative and perfect pitch are about

I don’t know if you guys realize but improvising and adapting on the fly like Dooo does is _not_ a normal musician ability. You have to either have like 40 years of experience in music or nearly perfect pitch just to “understand” what you’re hearing. Then you have to master the guitar like your life depends on it to play what you just understood. That’s one hell of a talent.

Doo is able to play songs he's never heard because he's listening to chords, not notes specifically, then he loops the chord progression. Next, he memorizes the melody (so he does listen to the individual notes). Once you have that you can make it your own thing through improvising. This takes aural training skills; the ability to hear intervals. Perfect pitch is when you know the precise note that's being played as opposed to just the interval (I don't know if dooo has perfect pitch but it isn't necessary). This is the real skill and can take years to develop. Like, there's no understating how hard this part is. Imagine hearing a song and then without even playing your guitar (or any instrument) you already know where to put your fingers. It's easier with pop music than something like say, a snarky puppy song.

If he works out the chords, the rest is improvisation based on those chords. However, this takes a lot of practice. The more skilled you are, the more impressive your impro is

For those who wonder how he picks up songs - most pop songs have a 4 chord structure, he just picks up those chords, loops them, picks up a bit of the melody and fills in the rest with his good scale knowledge. It's really how quickly he can pick it up without errors and find the scale within seconds that's super impressive, as does his looper pedal work. That thing is a nightmare to master.
