Hi Sherif, I just switched over from using Blackmagic / Canon to Panasonic Lumix last week. One thing I didn't realise that I would need to switch KZbin channels as well, since the ones I watched before were centered on the Blackmagic ecosystem - but I'm very happy I had to find new YT channels, because I find yours to be much better at disseminating information! Your info slides are very helpful and extremely well made, and I think you are really good at pointing to what's important among the endless sea of information one is faced with in the modern camera world. Subscribed and - if I ever find another Lumix video user here in Nuremberg - I will recommend it.

I almost picked up the Ninja V for my S5 and S1, but I really just don't think I will ever use ProRes RAW because of the workflow. I’ve had the S1H for a year now and admittedly rarely use a few of the standout features on client videos that the S5 doesn’t now have 😅 ie. 6K internal, barely noticeable IQ difference. Kinda bummed with the latest S1H firmware update but still a great camera. I must be the only S1H owner thinking of DOWNgrading to the S5 and picking up a lens (and then some) for the same price. Great review as always!!
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Yeah when the S1H came out, I knew its not for everyone. I also mentioned it here. There's so many things in it that not everyone will use or need. So in that case, S5 could be your choice. Or maybe the S1 when its new update comes out in Q1 2021

In my opinion, when the firmware releases, the S1 will be the real killer. Same evf/lcd, tiltable screen (no need to flip out when there's an external monitor), full size hdmi, same fn buttons, top screen, and nearly half the price. Hopefully it gets the ability to use TC from the pc sync port like the S1H. Another con of the S5 is the lower audio format when using the XLR adapter. Not so on the S1. We just need the few monitoring features the S5 got in the S1's update. Can't wait.

What s1 update is going to happen? I am about to order the s5 because it has slightly more advantages over the s1 for 200 euros less. But the flipscreen, maybe small body and micro hdmi are actually cons for me on the s5.

Should be Q1... and usually they wait till the very end. So probably April
@FabledFew4 жыл бұрын
So, there's supposed to be an update, quite similar to the one for S5, coming to the S1 in early 2021. Enabling 5.9K Raw video output, and a host of 10bit modes internally. At that point, you get all the high-resolution LCD/EVF advantages of the S1H and the full HDMI output in a relatively smaller body, and $1300 (if you count the $200 VLOG upgrade) cheaper. I think what Panasonic is doing is great, and even though they're blurring the line between their models, it means you can feel comfortable choosing any of their cameras, knowing that internally, they're all extremely capable, and there isn't much compromise.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын

Again, a great camera review! If I had to chose today between an S1H (which I bought in early summer) and the S5 - puh, difficult to say. Will I be angry about having made a wrong decision? No, not at all - because this is what one calls technical innovation. And, I am so glad to see Panasonic S-series to innovate such rapidly because it will attract more buyers and make the S-series stronger in the market, in return driving more lenses and more innovation to come. I can imagine that a nice S5 setup in conjuction with one of those new Apple M1 computers and Davinci Resolve V17 can make a small budgets professional filming setup many people have been dreaming of just a few years ago. Thanks for sharing this valuable insights, ideally helping more people to go for a Panasonic S-series camera! Just for the records: I have no personal connection with Panasonic, instead having been a fanatic Nikonista for taking stills over a couple of years.

Great review! I’ve been seriously considering the S1H, but while the S5 update makes it a compelling alternative, the mini HDMI is an epic failure on Panasonic’s part. I’ve had 2 mini and 1 micro HDMI ports fail on me, and I’m hard pressed to ever buy another product that uses them again. So close, and yet so far.
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know what you mean... but you just need an HDMI lock and you’re set. But yeah, it’s annoying

I mean, I really didn't have any micro hdmi fail on me. Also, just get a hdmi lock and you're all set. I don't think not getting a cage and a lock with the S5 that still weighs less and takes less space makes more sense than getting the s1h that also costs like 1.6 times more than the s5 with the cage and lock.

I don't know if the S5 has 5.9K internal h.264 or not, but it looks like the S1 is slated to have it. Maybe it will require CFast cards??? Out of curiosity, can the S5 record high frame rates in ProRes (NOT ProRes RAW) to the Ninja V without using the S&Q mode? Unfortunately the quality of the S&Q modes on the S5 and S1 are pretty bad.

I am looking for a B-cam for my BMPCC 6K and from a Davinci Resolve workflow perspective....Now that all s5, s1 and s1h can record braw externally with Blackmagic Video Assist....which one would you recommend? It would be great of you could help me make this decision as you own and have worked on almost each camera mentioned. Thanks in advance :)

Been using the S1H for a few days. Last Panasonic was a GX8. The articulating view finder on the GX8 was invaluable, and likewise, the way the display on the S1H can flip up as an alternative to protruding from the side, (Sony style), reduces neck/back ache from looking through the viewfinder when for whatever reason it is hard to raise the camera to eye level. (I recall Pentax did this first? Or was it Fuji?) I'm assuming the S5 display does not do this. The S1H is pretty much a do it all camera, just heavy! But, the gyms are closed, so makes a good dumbbell with the 24-70 f2.8 attached! ;) Eternal recording thanks to the fans is invaluable for what we use it for, scenic relaxation videos that we like to make as long as possible. Here is our first test footage from the S1H: kzbin.info/www/bejne/romxfXt3e6Z7haM (Nothing fancy, no zooming, processing, just direct from the camera MP4 4K 25fps, except high pass filter on the audio to mute the very loud wind noise.)

Absolutely not! Emmanuel Lubezki just shot a commercial short with the iPhone 12... Also another very well shot film "Snowbrawl" was also shot on iPhone 11 by David Leitch. Both Hollywood grade filmmakers... and both using phones and making them look beyond great! it's all about you and how you work around the tools you have, and make the best out of them.

Hi Tom. I was wondering if you could answer a tech question I have had concerning the S1H, but been unable to get a clear answer on; With the S1H (And now the S5) when you output 6K resolution as ProRes RAW to the Atomos Ninja, since ProRes RAW was designed to be a 12 bit 4:4:4 color space format, then does that also mean the S1H gets a bump up in color space from its internal 6K spec of 4:2:0 10 bit color space to 4:4:4 color space in keeping with the ProRes RAW Format ?
@KeithSklower4 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that for 5.9K raw, it is doing a direct 12bit readout of the values of the indivdual pixels, which record separate colors according to the Bayer pattern 2 greens, 1 red and 1 blue for every group of 4. You could compute by 3 x 12 bit values for every pixel by spatial averaging, and store that as a 4:4:4: file, but you're really only getting 4:2:2's worth of accuracy' I also do not know whether the the camera is doing clipping or scaling of the actual values. On the sony a7sIII, it is claimed that sony is trsnamitting 16 bit values, which the ninja processes. Panasonic claims to have 14 stops of dynamic range, so I think it has to have at least 14 bits internally.

Great video man! Been following your channel for a while. I’m seriously considering this camera now... I own a Sony A7 III, shoot mostly video, and I'm looking to upgrade from 8-bit slog (I’ve got used to it somehow though). This S5 seems like a great option, but I wonder what a “future” A7 IV next year may have. I have only manual lenses, so no sweat on changing systems, and AF is not a big deal for me right now (though it’d be nice to have the option in the future). That being said, since you have experience shooting both Sony and Panasonic, do you have any thoughts? I'd love to just get a Pocket 6k or A7S III, but I don't have the funds, and I want to take stills as well, so selling and buying another hybrid is my only option. Honestly, I’m not sure a future A7 IV may bring more than what this S5 offers…besides autofocus or ALL-I codecs… Greetings from Spain!

I am in the same exact situation as you are! This does seems like a great value camera. I am confused between this and pocket 6k to be honest. In the price of a7s3 I can get a lens with either of those 2 cameras!

The Gen 5 colour science on 6K pro can be a deal breaker. Also, that screen! There is nothing like that in the market. It's probably the best screen on any camera right now. But, the Panny S5 has in body stabilisation which is quite good. The low light on S5 is also better. Plus the ability to shoot good stills. Not to forget, the Panny has a full frame sensor, which is just incredible.

LUMIX S5 VIDEO SHOOTERS PSA: Issue: Glitchy, pixelated lines in the image when using HDMI. Lines of different lengths appearing in different parts of the image a single frame at a time. Long story short. I have been chasing this issue for a couple of months now. Returned my original S5 for a new one, sent my Ninja V in for repair, was sent back with a clean bill of health. Bought the $60 Atomos cable, the issue persists. I originally thought the issue was unique to 5.9K ProRes RAW, turns out, that these lines show up when using the HDMI out in-general. The 12bit 5.9K ProRes Raw image out of this setup is unbelievably good and more than useable for any professional production. But this issue makes the camera impossible to trust for paid work when recording over HDMI. I have found many other users with the same issue, including a thread of comments on Spence Sakurai's review of the camera. IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE, PLEASE REPORT IT TO PANASONIC SO THAT THEY TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY.

Hallo Can you answer my question? After this firmw. update, the Panasonic S5 can record externally to Atomos Ninja 4K or UHD- 50/60FPS 10bit 4.2.2.? " NOT to Raw and NOT 4.2.0.!" I mean only to ProRes: LT/4.2.2./4.2.2. HQ ???

Hello I like your video as you present facts instead of sensational opinions. I am a Blackmagic 4k user. One of the most useful features of the Blackmagic cameras is braw. I rarely use Pro res as I find braw superior. Can you tell me if the S-5 can record to Blackmagic Video Assist in braw format. Thanks again for the informative video.

Hi, thanks for watching. Not sure what you meant by “sensational opinions”, but there’s a huge difference between rumors and predictions. I’ve been asked a lot about what I think will come out, and I thought of sharing my thoughts. Not 100% sure about S5 and BRAW on video assist. I personally haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere

Hey man, great video as usual, I have a hugely important question to ask since I never got an answer elsewhere. So I have the A7siii and am able to record with the Ninja V to do ProRes RAW, since the S5 has ProRes RAW now too, resolution aside, would it be the same image quality in terms of grading it In post and dynamic range since both the A7siii and the S5 records at ProRes RAW? Really hoping for an answer on this, then I can make a purchase decision accordingly, thanks man 🙂
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, well... Dynamic range is very similar in both cams. To be clear, dynamic range in internal compressed and external RAW are identical in the same camera. People think Raw will offer more DR, which is absolutely not true. As for the image quality.... I'm about to release the Part 2 of my A7SIII Prores Raw analysis... which might answer some of your questions. I will also compare both A7 and S1H/S5 in another episode coming later... But generally speaking, those are 2 completely different sensors, so they perform differently when it comes to colors, noise, etc... I can't tell you which one is better since it's a very subjective opinion. A7S3 is more orange, while S5 is more Magenta. S5 will have less visible noise in low ISO based on a very initial test I conducted with 6K. My advise is to try it honestly. or tell me what you're looking for and I might be able to recommend a camera for that.
@AdamLoboTV4 жыл бұрын
The DP Journey Hey mate, thank you so much for your full explanation my friend, I also have the Pocket 6k and I am having troubles matching the colours with BRAW and ProRes RAW, that’s why I asked as I am stuck on how I match those
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Yeah matching different sensors looks is not the easiest task... you’re not alone in this. There are apps and plugins that can help. But the ideal is just buying same cameras or at least using the same log profile from the cameras of the same brand

If you really want a S1h killer, you need to get a S1. All the benefits of the S5 plus, weather sealing, full size hdmi, better ibis, internal 6k recording, better audio record bit rate when used with the xlr-1, and lock switch etc. And even cheaper than the S5 !!! Its a no brainer.

Quick question for you. How often do you notice the difference in your footage from the OLPF in the S1h? I’ve seen a few side by side comparisons that emphasize moire, but it’s a bit unclear how much this shows up in real world terms.
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I’m haven’t noticed it. But again, I haven’t conducted any scientific tests to measure the difference. I simply didn’t “feel” there’s a difference, even though there might be to a certain degree
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the moire problem would be an issue for someone who is used to shoot talking heads and interviews with people who wear suits. But let’s say if you are a nature or travel shooter, you won’t have issues with that. I don’t shoot much people wearing suits with fixed patterns, maybe that’s why I haven’t noticed it
@jordanfish3 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY Cool, thanks so much for the response, and that makes a lot of sense. If you’re interested, this is the video I was looking at, where the photographer noticed moire in his subject’s hair, for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHesY2qQnZiMedk
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Yeah what he experienced is just different scenarios. But keep in mind, low pass filter which prevents moiré will make your footage slightly softer. Which is up to you to whether you feel it’s good or bad
