Did the Pilots at Boston Med Flight tell you about the button on the side of the collective that can be used for spatial disorientation after Inadvertent flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IIMC)? Returns the aircraft to level flight then initiates a gentle climb (great for pilot incapacitation, too). I spent a weekend in December 2022 flying as an Observer with Dare County MedFlight on their new H145 D3. They were the North America launch customer.

That’s mostly accurate. There are two buttons that you’ve mixed together. The button on the collective is the “go around” button. Typically used when going missed on an IFR approach. It initiates a 1,000fpm climb, arms altitude acquire (if you have an altitude bugged), and couples the missed approach procedure, if loaded into the GPS. The recovery switch you’re referring to is on the cyclic. When activated, it captures current altitude, heading, and airspeed, engaging 4 axis autopilot, allowing you to go completely hands off so the aircraft can level everything out. Great feature to have if you’re ever disoriented.

You can watch this video of someone going over all the buttons in the H, around the 2 minute mark is where he talks about the IIMC recovery button, and 8:45 he talks about the go around. @@helicopterin Thanks for this. The explanation was much better than what I received from Cam Thompson, one of Dare MedFlight line pilots. The closest to this in any HEMS program I’ve flown with was on the five Leonardo AW-139’s operated by New Jersey State Police. The AW-139 has a Hover Hold feature as part of the 4-axis digital autopilot. Fly safe up there.

Boston med flight sounds absolutely insane. Out where I am, we have one of the best air ambulance services in America. Boston medflight seems leagues above even ours.

I worked for Keystone Helicopter in the 80’s and 90’s. We set up the helicopter operation and provided the helicopters, pilots and maintenance for Boston Med Flight. They were originally in an Eastern Airlines hangar on Logan.

I've worked communications for MedFlight (I'd call it "dispatch," but the FAA's involved) for 10 years, and have been a medic/EMT since 1992. This is one of the best review videos I've seen on KZbin, and I'm glad you got the chance to visit Plymouth, especially after they just redid the hangar. Thank you for doing this and sharing it with everyone.

I had the pleasure of working at BMF for several years. They are some of the greatest clinicians in the world. An incredible program. And yes, Plymouth was remodeled several years ago. It was a dump prior to that.

I have a few friends who work for Boston MedFlight... One thing they do is that all employees whether they work in dispatch or are drivers for the ground units get to fly to know what the flight crews do and go through.

19:54 Their EC145s 273NE and 274NE had wire cutters on the skids and hull as well as a spotlight mounted to the side, good chance not needed like you said. Great video! If you continue to explore New England’s medical helicopters I’d love to hear from Lifeflight of Maine, their choice to fly AW109s when everyone else in NEAA flies the EC135 and 145 families because of their speed & the size of the state is pretty neat

This aircraft was a wet dream for those of us flight medics on a BK117 in the early 80s. We didnt have a quarter of the equipment this aircraft has onboard. Wish we had the stretcher. Would have made life much easier.

It's crazy that people who have to pay for a life-saving procedure such as a rescue flight and the amount charged is so high that they can be run down. This only happens in the USA. I live in Germany and had an accident. I tipped over with a ladder and fell with my face onto a window sill on the first floor of the house. Luckily, my sister found me just minutes later. She called 911 immediately and the ambulance with the paramedics, the emergency doctor and the driver arrived 7 minutes later. And just 2 minutes later, a rescue helicopter, an EC 145 from the ADAC (Allgemeine Deutsche Automobil-Club) was on the scene. The emergency call center did this automatically in the event of a head injury. I was conscious, but I was probably just talking nonsense. So my sister was asked which hospital I should be flown to. She could choose between three hospitals. However, the emergency doctor from the helicopter made a recommendation and she followed it. After some time in hospital and three operations on my upper jaw and cheekbone, I was allowed to go home again. What did I have to pay? For the ambulance with emergency doctor, paramedic and driver.... Nothing! For the rescue helicopter with emergency doctor, paramedic and pilot.... also nothing. Nothing for the operations and hospitalization in the clinic .... either. All I had to pay was 10 euros per day for the time I had to be in the clinic. So around 200 euros. This is how healthcare works in a developed country. The USA is far from being developed in this respect.

In sweden we have similar system, they send helicopter immediately when it is needed and there is no talk about bills as USA have..... everything is paid by taxes and you only pay a small cost for the time you spend in hospital. So in this case , taxes are for a good thing 😊😊

we. are. SO. painfully. aware. Of how trash our medical system is!! My dad makes a killing off of the suffering of others and I think my life is largely funded by that. We know! You don’t have to tell us how shit we have it! We’re not as oblivious as you might think! Consider this - part of the reason you enjoy free healthcare is that the US partly subsidizes this for you by means of our massive defense spendings for NATO. Think of how much more you would have to spend if we pulled out.

I unfortunately had to catch a ride in one of these just the other day. I can’t say I remember a whole lot but it was smooth. Mayo Clinic in MN just upgraded to these. They are always referred to as Mayo One, because that’s what Mayos original helicopter was called. St. Mary’s level one trauma center is nice to have close by. Thank you for the video!

Having flown the BK117-C2 variant, I would love to fly this model. It's the most well rounded capable platform in it's market for HAA in the USA.

I spent my last 10 years of my 40-year flying career in HEMS in the Carolinas. This same business plan would be much more beneficial to the communities in the states. Helicopter shopping and pressure from management to respond are the leading factors leading to high risk assessments for flight requests

I wish more teams would use this specific aircraft in the high and hot environments for SAR in high and hot environments for SAR so we can get better information in how they perform in this enviornment. There are teams in Europe that are using this exact aircraft for SAR with hoist capability, but none of them are using it at the altitudes and temperatures we have here in Colorado. This aircraft has a lot more power than the Bell 429 that Air Zermat uses. I know Rega uses an H145, but not sure they use a 5 blade version.

So awesome. I don't know if you've ever done a video on this but it would be cool if you made a video on how often helos transport prisoners. I watch a few prisom channels amd they seem to tell sbout it as a fairly routine thing. Os it more sof a security thing seeing you can't really escape from a helo, or is it just for speedy trip to the ER or im guessing a combination of both? Thanks.

As a Comm Spec. for BMF- we transport a handful of prisoners per year. Every prisoner has a guard that accompanies them for transport. Not all are unconscious. If they’re calling for us, they’re in pretty serious condition.

Yup, tracks localizer and glideslope or GPS approaches just like a fixed-wing. Pretty incredible. I don’t think helicopters really use the CAT-III rating system because the safety issue of minimums, roll-out, etc are different when you aren’t touching the ground at 140 mph lol.

They have proprietary RNAV approaches into each of the hospitals. SVFR is much preferred by both ATC and the pilots, but if they have to they can and will go IFR.

Impressive bird. John Oliver did an interesting piece on EMS in the US. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6vZaaaaibGrgdEsi=Sez6HZlKstA5ucaF In summary, there's no Federal Agency to ensure consistency as there is with Fire Departments. In 39 states EMS is not considered an essential service - - this prevents EMS from access to some government funding. Medical Flight companies are regulated like an airline...sort of. So yea, the capability is pretty outstanding but it operates in a crazy landscape.

Why doesn't the US government do this work? Our med helicopters are from our government and is free for the patient transported. A company or organisation isnt allowed to fly with patients as a medflight. Only the government owned helicopters can do that. Its done so people dont overpay for the costs and dont go bankrupt because of it. The pilots that fly the medical helicopters are all ex military pilots and that the only way you can fly them. At least 15years of military flying is needed for those helicopters. Every healthcare part is government owned and payed for thankfully. Its horrible the USA doesn't care enough to pay for those things

The US Coast Guard does Med flight but just for the calls the private company can’t get to. And I assume you live Europe so that explains why you want the government involved in everything.
