The latest DJI firmware update has added “Waypoints” to the Mavic 3 & Mavic 3 classic. Waypoints is an intelligent flight mode that allows the drone to automatically fly a pre-planned route and do actions such as start recording, focus on a point of interest, take a photo and more. Do you happen to know if you can use this feature and turn off the RTH feature? I would like to use a feature like this without the drone trying to RTH, simply stop and hover, so you can walk to it and collect it once the mission is complete.

Another question though, having watched to the end of the clip 🙂 what is the minimum flight speed for waypoint missions? Looks like you had the collision course mission set on 0.7m/s, or maybe the drone had already started slowing by the time you trimmed the clip for your video? So is it possible to set speed at 0.1m/s and is that the lowest setting?

First Mavic 3 waypoint mission flown today, followed Matthew’s instructions and set it up at home as I knew the flight area well, then tweaked a couple of things when I got to site. I’d definitely say it’s a good idea to at least practice at home so you know what you’re doing when you get to the site.

@@TheDroneCreative I thought it was really intuitive, more so than what used to be on the Phantom4, I forget what that was called. It’s definitely something I’ll use more of. I used it yesterday as a test for both waypoints but also running the Cine in ProRes, so I’ve just need to get to grips editing ProRes and correct colour grading it in Final Cut now.

It is now enabled, I’ve just bought it, but am unable to download it for some reason! Hopefully I’ll get this resolved soon, no network connection between my iPhone with the Dji fly app open and the RC controller. It’ll be a great addition to the versatility of the drone, once I get it uploaded!

I have been using Waypoints for a few missions and found some dangerous flaws...at least I think they are. I have had two incidents. I maybe should have thought of this out, but I did not. Disclaimer...I did not crash my drone. #1 - I set the waypoint to return to home after a mission. My drone is the "Mavic 3 Classic". It completed the mission and was 90' off the earth and it was set to RTH and this worked...except that I failed to take in account that its route back had a building in the way. This building is just under 200' in height. My FAA restricted height is 200' in the area I was flying. It DID NOT try to go around the building and thankfully it stopped and canceled the flight and hovered at 90'. One has to remember to record waypoints that clearly gives a clear path for it to RTH before you 'sign off' on the waypoint function. #2 - I set up another waypoint mission. This time I flew to the first point(up and over trees that were behind me and off to the left). I flew it and marked the waypoints along the way and then, when it was still in the air...told it to execute the mission(from where the last waypoint was, to the first waypoint, there was nothing in the way. So no issues). It worked perfectly and came home(again, nothing in the way). I looked at the footage and wanted it to fly the mission faster(that's what autopilot is all about...right?). So while the drone is on the ground resting, I set the new speed and hit 'GO'. Well, the direct line between where it departed from, to the start point, was through 'those trees'. Before I could scream, the drone is off like bullet to the start point and BANG...it found those trees. Luckily the avoidance system kicked in(as it was giving the tree's leaves a little weed-whacking) and stopped. The conclusion is to include waypoints that avoids obstacles. Program in a direct path back and at a safe altitude.

Waypoints are awesome, been using them since I was a wee lad, I feel the Mavic 3 does a much better job than the Mavic 2 series in terms of smoothness, hopefully we'll get even more control over that in the future though. Put a damn scarf on, I got a sore throat just watching you out there!

I’ve done a ton of waypoint flights but I’m not seeing some of the options you showed in this video and I didn’t know you could set up the waypoints in advance when you aren’t at the location. I fly both the DJI Air 2S and the Mavic 3 Pro. I’m going to have to dive deeper into the menus now.

Well explained, Matthew! It made me wonder: is it possible to re-rank your waypoints? Let’s say you want to start by making a pathway of 3 waypoints for figuring out a tricky route in a tight spot, something you want to have settled before adding more options. Then afterwards, say I add a few waypoints previous to and after the 3 made earlier. Will the software recognize so that the initial 3 waypoints are in the middle of the route and not just in the beginning? Also, POI counts just for static objects, not moving ones?

DJI need to add an option to lock a mission once you are happy , it is all to easy to add an extra waypoint out on location by mistake and not notice it a mile away lol, Litchi has this option for this same reason .
