My dear departed husband and I spent 51 years together but now he has gone to a better place. Yes it is lonely round the Fields of Athenry without him albeit I live in Kent. God bless him and God bless the Dubliners for making such beautiful music and singing it so soulfully. Thank you.

I was born in England but my ancestors were Irish and left after the famine. I sang this song to a retirement community in Canberra Australia a couple of days ago and could not keep the tears back as I sang it. I noticed people in the audience also crying. It is such a sad song, and Paddy O’Reilly sings it so well. History contained some tragic situations. Let us hope that in this day and age we can all live in peace together. Unfortunately there is still so much tragedy and conflict in the world. May we all pray that this conflict is soon resolved.

When I was in high school, my nickname was “Dropkick”. Because I always wore this Dropkick Murphys t-shirt. It had the lyrics “Low lie the fields of Athenry. Where once we watched the small free birds fly. Etc.” I used to shrug it off. Then I got in touch with my ancestry and realized I’m 30% Irish. I always feel like nothing really fits me or understands me. Then I listen to this and I’m home.

*I couldn't find a video with lyrics, but alas:* "By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling... "Michael, they have taken you away... For you stole Trevelyan's corn, So the young might see the morn. Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay..." Low lie the fields of Athenry, Where once we watched the small free birds fly... Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing... It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry... By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling, 'Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free... Against the famine and the crown I rebelled; they cut me down Now you must raise our child with dignity.' Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly... Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing... It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry... By a lonely harbour wall, She watched the last star falling, As that prison ship sailed out against the sky... For she lived in hope and pray, For her love in Botany Bay... It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry... Low lie the fields of Athenry, Where once we watched the small free birds fly... Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing... It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry..."
