To be fair: since 5D’s came out at the time when the card game has solid rulings, card are designed to be much closer to what the actual card game is. So the big boss monsters are all the same from the anime except their attributes and type (Divine are Egyptian Gods exclusives), what made the big boss fail was their specific tuners. Towers, literally, weren’t a thing until 2014

So fun fact... I actually built a nordic deck after a friend of mine who was done with yugioh gave me the decently sized stack of cards he owned (like, maybe 2 or 3 decks worth)... and it included a Ghost-Rare Odin.

That's decently easy to explain. Archetypes depend on the japanese names. Valkyrie isn't a Valkyrie card because the Valkyrie cards are Siegfried's Valkyries, and are pronounced in German (Valkyure), but Valkyrie is pronounced Valkyuria. Meanwhile, Blaze Accelerator is just called Blaze Cannon in Japanese. Blaze Cannon is called God Blaze Cannon is obviously a Blaze Cannon card.

Here’s the thing about Nordics back in 2011, it actually was at least a decent rogue pick during Tengu Plant format with it getting top 32 finish at YCS Toronto. The main strategy revolved around using Tanngnjostr’s effect which the Trap Rota Gleipnir works with since you activate this when your opponent declares an attack that would destroy your monster by battle. Tanngnjostr was also target off of Super Nimble Mega Hamster so its effect giving you access to either Synchro 7s or Rank 3s was able to happen more consistently than people thought. The version that topped in YCS Toronto paired the Nordics with Tengu since it’s great Synchro material, and Tour Guide since that also help to search for your Tanngnjostr. I think with the limited information at the time, and the perception that the Nordic cards were filler, the deck was not given more of a chance back in 2011. Especially with how modern Tengu has been making new innovations, Nordics could definitely be given more attention if more players gave it a chance.

If I remember correctly, there was a nordic beast hybrid deck that topped a YCS in 2011, I cant remember how, but I swear it did, I remember. Edit: Just looked it up, Nordic Beast/Tengu synchro YCS Toronto top 32 October 4, 2011. It was true they had a top! Also famously the YCS where Billy Brake basically intruduced Maxx C to competitive Yugioh in his victory.

I like the nod to the source material with having mini Kaijus in Fenrir and Jörmungandr, and gave me the idea of a "road to Ragnarök" kind of gameplan for an alternate version of this archetype. Basically, you build up your board with Thor, Odin, etc, and your opponent's board with Kaiju-like cards for Loki, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr. Then you activate a card(s) representing Heimdell blowing the Gjallarhorn which would activate an alternative win condition for you if any of the fated battles occur like Odin vs. Fenrir, Thor vs. Jörmungandr, and Heimdall vs. Loki. Maybe your plan goes south and you need to reset? Out comes Surtur to nuke the board with Baldr getting revived from the graveyard to restart the cycle. Throw in cards for Hel, Yggdrasill, Valhalla, maybe field spells for the nine realms, and of course Ratatoskr too. Nordic mythology is too rich to be limited to being a mediocre at best Synchro deck. It makes me wish that Konami would make a modern/good deck for the Olympians too.

I want to say this archetype is a simple fix but I dunno. I guess the simpliest fix is to retrain the Aesir monsters. All of the overcorrection still summons garbage monster. Even give them the condition of "This card can be summoned with any Nordic tuner but the other materials must be Nordic or Aesir monsters"

I think Odin and Thor would be fine if they just had "quick effect" tied to their main effect (loki is screwed on that tho) so if they just added a card that made them quick effects kinda like Orcust and their field spell "Orcustrated Babel" I think they would be fine, not strong but decent. Maybe a monster that can be summoned of the link 1's effect and that searches a field spell that makes them quick effects while giving some form of protection.

The nordic deck needs like a couple more main deck monsters and complete retrains of the Aesir. Maybe just some other gods but I doubt they'd ever make other gods that like 5 people know the existence of yet the three everyone actually knows from pop culture remain unplayable. Loki should get a retrain that negates spell/traps in any phase and during either players turn + some other effect. Thor I envision as having an ultimate conductor tyranno-esque effect to be a board breaker, just kinda makes sense with the flavour at least to me + would make sense with retrains of the "summon myself for the opponent" gimmick with fenrir and jormungandr. And Odin should be either another negate or some other equally powerful but generic stuff. The two pieces of dog and snake shit fenrir and jormungandr should be like one is a bootleg kaiju, the other a double search or something but they lock you into nordic/Aesir summons.

They should have either made it one cohesive archetype, or made 3 actual archetypes that are somewhat compatible (so they could function in the TagDual format like in the Anime)

Failed or not, at least this deck works well against Mikanko and also has helped me win every Legend Anthology event while getting every reward. Of course this is in Master Duel and not the TCG like these videos are about. I still enjoy playing them tho

Just make other versions of the Nordic Gods. Same thing that happened to Red Dragon Archfiend, with their names counting as the original Bosses. Improved effects from the old ones, banishing to summon servants that cannot be responded to, and few good spell and trap cards to add more protection to them.

They just need to launch an entire retrain of their boss monsters, then slip in a few new supports that actually synchronize with them. But this is Konami we're talking about, so thats about as likely as a meteor made of gold landing on my left foot tomorrow.

Battlewasp. Tried them out but without non archetype support (like wyn the windchanneler) and stat stick protection synchros (crystal wing synchro dragon), the archetype is pretty bad nowadays. Even the lvl 12 boss monster is a joke compared to todays synchros. Feel like 2-3 good support cards would male them at least playable again. Spells are great.
