I love how the abstract nature of OSR rpgs when generating surroundings for example lends itself to interpretation. When you rolled a "burning swamp" and described what might be an acidic bog with the smell of aggressive chemicals in the air, in my head i imagined dead and dreary mire with a marsh fire in the distance, the strong cold winds blowing the fumes of rot into my direction. (basically southern Louisiana in the winter when some dickheads set off a fire to chase animals out of the bayous)

In a similar vein to most of the comments here, this video inspired me to pick up the necessary supplements for Mörk Borg and plan to run a solo or co-op campaign as soon as I get the material in. I love year-long planned out campaigns of the modern TTRPG style, but I'm excited for the nostalgic feel of rolling on so many tables and just seeing what chaos ensues.

I've started my own solo campaign inspired by this series and absolutely fell in love with the game. During my character creation, the story sort of presented itself. My name is Belsum Kratar and I'm pretty good at protecting myself. But I can't hurt a fly, and I'm the absolute worst at ranged weapons. What has he started with? A crossbow. This poor pacifist fool is forced to leave his village due to the growing goblin problem... His first goal... Find a new weapon. Local legends speak of an Occult treasure buried deep in the swamps to the east. Perhaps that is his solution?

So, I really enjoyed this and am tempted to give it a go. Something i'm struggling to get my head around though, if you're playing this by yourself, and not recording it for a video, are you still talking yourself through the story? Are you writing it down instead? Some other method?! I have next to zero experience with tabletop RPGs so apologise if that's a stupid question!
@TheDungeonDive2 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all! It all depends on what I’m trying to achieve. Usually I would at least do some light journaling for a solo RPG. You can keep a note book and add to it from game to game. When I’m playing I usually do talk out loud to myself. :)

This is a great system. I also think you would really enjoy Harper's Quest 2. It is it's own self contained solo dungeon crawl / questing game with oracles and dungeon as well as quest genetation. But it can be applied to running pre-made adventures solo. It provides conversion suggestions and the like. And I know you like a game that is rules light, this is only 27 pages. I fell in love with it in one evening! I would really like to hear your thoughts. Hopefully it can sneak into your schedule!

Having never really played D&D, watching you do this is very intriguing but also intimidating. Would you say you are able to do this all from prior experience or can a new solo player learn to do this just from reading Mork Borg, Feritory and Solitary Defilement? Does it have a steep learning curve for an absolute beginner?
@TheDungeonDive2 жыл бұрын
I think Scarlet Heroes might be a better introduction. Hard for me to say for someone who has zero experience with RPGs.
@rickartw88672 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks. Do you think Solitary Defilement can be used with other rules systems?
@TheDungeonDive2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that. MB is pretty unique and SD is tailored for it. However, it could probably work for an OSR style game with a bit of work. For other games, I would use Scarlet Heroes.
@vincenzogiambusso2 жыл бұрын
SD takes some ideas from Ironsworn, I think you can easily refer to that in order to create a custom experience. If you add the expansion Delve, you also get the 'dungeon crawl' experience covered as well
