I’m an asphalt sailor (tractor trailer driver) lol. I love watching these updates. I look forward to every video you do. Unlike most of your followers, I know nothing about boating. I love the looks of them but I’ve never experienced riding in a boat other than a small ski boat on a lake. But for some reason, I’m glued to watching this life size model come to life. Maybe it’s because I have a passion to build things and love the feeling of gratification once a project is complete. From what I’ve seen so far, as far, I’m guessing you’ve lessened the weight around 558 lbs.

I've done several foam core panels to make new or replace bulkheads in my small racing cat. By recording the weights of all my raw material prior to vac bagging I was able to calculate that my finished resin to fiber was 38%, and that's just doing wet lay-up with the breather cloth and peel ply as the only way to absorb excess resin. Infusion is great and the America's Cup Pro's are shooting for 35%, but the extra cost of consumables and time to set up, plus the risk of a failed infusion are just not worth it to me. For cruising boats I think a careful wet lay-up and the vac-bag are perfect and yields great results with lower risk. I love watching the progress and attention to detail on this project, keep it up!

We got knocked down in that 52ft Erwin I told ya about in/near the grand bahama island half way to bimini. There was a water spout and the wind from it knocked the boat alll the way over. Top of the mast was in the water! Well as you may know the keel on an Erwin is heavy! It brought us back upright. We were only flat for less than a minute but we still had to change our shorts afterwards. Then all of a sudden the wind just quit, dead silence and all the water that got sucked up by the funnel dumped on us! There was about an inch of water on the deck for a second or two before it ran off. I tell ya this because we both are good sailers and sometimes we still get surprised. I’m just glad that when we saw the sky’s getting a lil dark we didn’t take any chances and closed all the portholes to be safe. That is prolly the only reason we didn’t get water logged. Your boat is coming along great. Keep makin the videos. (I wouldnt want to be on the internet either😏)

Love your channel!Since you are so smart and meticulous in updating this boat, I‘d say you calculated all the changes so tightly that there is no net weight difference to the original boat yet (in fact the windows of the old doghouse might tip the scale into minus but I say no difference for the sake of having a firm number).

I am guessing about 250 pounds less so far. Before you put on the cockpit inner panels, you could remove the original sloped top-deck of the original transom, that would allow you to make some nicely shaped and usable lockers. But I guess you have already considered that. love the project, I am refitting a 1984 Admirals Cup type IOR 1 Tonner, a lot of fun too. Cheers

Net zero. I don’t see the transom mod adding much additional buoyancy but whatever weight you did add wants to be offset by same. The vacuum bagging is key. Don’t know how you could achieve consistent lamination work without it. Plus you make it look easy.

I'd guess the net weight difference so far is close to zero. You removed the water ballast tanks, pod, original doghouse with windows, and cockpit. You basically relocated the aft bulkhead for (probably) net zero. You added the new doghouse and stern extension. The new doghouse is much bigger than the old, but there are no windows installed and the old doghouse looks like it was built to be bulletproof, so I imagine it is quite heavy. Love your channel, your attitudes, and your approach to the whole project.

As always Mat love your work and really liked The Honey. I am guessing that the nett weight difference is 200 kg but not sure if that is lighter or heavier. Probably the new improvements are lighter because of the vacume bag technology and you can use less resin. 🐟

As I have never built a boat so don’t have intimate knowledge of the weight of the materials being used, but watching the thoroughness of the work you have done, I would guess that the boat is about 400 lbs heavier because of the addition of the larger doghouse and using the old windows. I would also assume that the additional weight would give you a smoother ride during heavier than normal winds.

I would guess you have added a net +237 lbs to the weight of boat. You have used significantly more layers of fiberglass than the original it seems and I'm guessing that will add quite a bit of weight over every square foot

Awesome work again brother. You don't mess about with you super strong fiberglass so my guess is you added some net weight but not too much, maybe 40Kg's so far?

Guessing the bulkhead change is a relative net 0. The new dog house is probably a bit heavier than the old one just because of size. Cockpit removal is likely about the same as the extension, so net 0 there too. But the tanks you took out were pretty big - so Im guessing a small overall decrease so far - say 100lbs less overall?.
