The advantage you have on all of us, armchair boatbuilders, is that (a) you "are" a boat builder and (b) you have been sailing on many different vessels; so you know what you want. Also, love the mix of boat building and stories, it makes your channel different. Finally, the crime of fibreglass boats is that once they are junked they are 0% recyclable. You on the other hand are giving not only a second life to an old boat, but you are even re-using material that you cut out of the boat... Genius

The package you recieved that is so cool just having a piece of history, to having Mike Plants family happy to see you doing what you are, that is the true spirit of this overhaul in getting Durecell back in the water in a different way.... Speachless, history is so important and it seems at times it is forgotten but not in this project keep up the good work....

Even though it is not anywhere near the same league as yours, I also really enjoy learning more about my boat. It is so interesting to learn how much history is bound in the boat. I also really like looking at the old brochures and manuals, they are really a look into the past. Your boat project is so very special, because you respect the past and the boat’s history, something a lot of people wouldn’t care about. Your work on the boat is scarily good and your deliberations are very competent. I look forward to you guys documenting your (well earned) trips around the world, and I hope Duracell is looking forward to stretching her legs and getting wind in her sails once more!

If saiing shorthanded, one of the most fundamental aspects of twin wheel vs single is that of safety - a single wheel forces you to go outside the wheel, whilst twin wheels mean that you go inboard. We run a charter business and I can confirm that the contra to this is that the twin wheel systems give us far more headaches from a maintenance perspective!

Now you've explained your reasons for a twin helm set up, of course it makes sense! But then, I'm still telling people why a tiller is far preferable to a wheel - although that would definitely not work for you!
@_Briegel
@_Briegel 2 жыл бұрын
Just install a foldable wheel. You can then drive on the right, in the middle or on the left, depending on how it makes sense in the respective situation. As an example, here is the control unit on a Sirius yacht. It is designed as a cruising yacht, but the solution with the steering column could also make sense for your project. You don't move the necessary displays to a central column (as shown in the example video), but to the deckhouse wall, or connect them to the foldable steering column. This way you get all the advantages of both layouts, i.e. a central view to the front, but also a good lateral view and a free, central passage. Goes off at 3:30! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJS5h6Z7o7p1i8U

I got home from school one day and my father's 48" stainless steel Destroyer wheel was laying on my 12' hydroplane in the garage and my 14" racing wheel was gone ! With further investigation I found my father in the back yard waking back and forth in the cockpit of his sailboat past the tiny wheel installed on the binacle, he claimed it was the best modification he made to the boat next to the hydraulic steering ! It looked silly but he loved the walking room it gave him in the cockpit , Have fun people !!!!

Have you considered reaching out to Fesstool for a sponsorship? I noticed Matt Is using the Fesstool Rotex, which is an awesome sander. I own the smaller version. He could really use the vacuum to keep the air particles down plus the convenience of auto on,, but I know they are stupid expensive. He uses a respirator on a normal basis, so it must be on his mind. I spent a significant amount of time sanding down the topsides of my boat. and despite the cost of the Fesstool sander and vacuum, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. And I think anyone redoing a boat would agree after they have used one.

Hi and thank you for sharing this exciting and ambitious build. Two things about your lamination schedule that I don't understand are the coat of cabosil thickened epoxy before laying your first glass and the second is the use of 1708. I was taught that epoxy doesn't dissolve the binders in chopped mat, yet many people use it with epoxy. I have done this in the past, but stopped doing so because of the difficulties wetting it out properly. Wouldn't one be better off using straight 1700 and maybe a 6oz cloth to arrive at roughly the same schedule?
@TheDuracellProject
@TheDuracellProject 2 жыл бұрын
foam absorbs resin and applying thickened epoxy uses less epoxy while filling in the cells for the epoxy to adhere. 1708 mat is stitched as opposed to glued together (like normal mat)....it is tough to wet it out because it's so heavy. your suggestion would work fine too, but what I have is readily avai;able, cheaper, and a little but faster given I only have to do one lamination. cheers!

Hi, first, sorry for my crappy English. About the design problem between a giant wheel vs tween wheels, I would like to advice the design of the Sirius 35 ds sailboat. It's very clever, with a single one, and a tilting pole, that can switch between port or starboard, keeping the advantages of both concepts. Better to see a picture or video than my explanation. Best regards from a boat restorer from Spain. Very pleased with your work.

@leonply
@leonply 2 жыл бұрын
A single helm, with versa swing arm and smaller wheel, would allow a less expensive and possibly safer option, especially on a boat which is planned to be a long-distance cruiser. Not degrading the dual-helm design, but the cockpit table will still require "walking around things" in the area and there aren't safety steps from which to access the deck. You're doing a wonderful job and I was thinking of stopping by the next time that I drive up from Portland to Seattle to visit Kurt Hughes (he's the genius designing the trimaran which I am looking to have built). Cheers and good luck!!

Good call on the twin-wheels and walk-through cockpit (I've been pro twin-wheels all along and swear by them, via my own experience both in-shore and bluewater). Steering while sitting on the coaming to windward , with the wheel right next to you, is preferential as you can see whats coming at you and feel the wind/weather/boat connection. Also, twin-wheel steering systems have been around for ages and they are not complicated or inordinately expensive. Any number of well-known, reliable manufacturers can supply these - Jefa, Edson, Lewmar and many others.

Myplan for duel helm with dual rudder is to use 2 vertical tillers. With a heavy quadrant at the base of the vertical tillers a square configuration to pullies at the hull and to the quadrants on the rudder shafts. That should give good feel for the pressure on the rudders like a normal tiller on the rudder shaft but can be configured to turn the boat in the direction of the tiller movement.

Hi Matt I have been following along and enjoy the videos . Just a couple thoughts from me on the steering . I think it was in a PBY Catalina sea plane that had steering yoke , that could be moved from pilot to copilot , so if you had one wheel that could be flipped left to right . In a vertical arch like windshield wipers . It would sit in V shaped pocket in the floor . It would make the steering less complicated and easier to fix at sea . You would have the openness you want . As for the steering , could you not use a automotive Rack & Pinion unit . There are non power racks out there , the gear ratio can be adjusted by the size of the chain sprockets turning it . Oh the historical package you received from your friend is really nice . Good wishes for you both .
