In this episode, I figure out how much weight I have removed and added to the boat to find out the net difference and I finish up the stern modification (well, almost).

So cool that your bagged layup is lighter than the original wet layup. There will be more boat and hopefully not a lot heavier. She’s got the water plane aft to support some extra weight back there and not go badly out of trim. Great, inspiring stuff! Thank you for sharing :)

Hopefully not too off topic, but this is something that comes up on chasing Latitudes Basically, modern composite technologies - like VIM - allow for stronger, yet lighter finished product Matt has an interesting project, because he has this tank of a hull, but is able to make all his mods using VIM

Can't get over how beautiful the original stern was. And what a cool swimming spot it would be. I would not had the heart, would have just left less room people, or gotten a bigger boat. It's not like the boat was very small to begin with.

Always a good idea to be aware of weight and balance. I’m a pilot and am familiar with weight and balance. Looks like you added weight to the center and aft of the boat. You may have a light bow. Simple to add weight to the bow. I don’t think you will have any lateral issues. What a tremendous project👍

The new stern looks awesome. You did the right choices, obviously. Talking about kilograms, compared to the total weight of the boat, it seems the difference won't alter much the position of the water line. Maybe you can compensate with the interior equipments (fridge, oven, bathroom...). I guess originally there were not many comfort equipments, as Duracell was a racing boat. Great work anyway.

Matt, you certainly went into more detail with the weight than I would have. But don't you also have to take into account the distance from the center of balance to determine its effect on the level of the boat? I think it's a lever problem: weight x distance. The center of balance is the fulcrum. That's what they do with airplane weight & balance. I build canoes so it's not a problem - we just move the beer cooler forward or aft.
@TheDuracellProject
@TheDuracellProject 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I should have explained that better in the video, the placement of the weight is just as important as the weight itself. Each position of new weight is being recorded in all 3 dimensions.

I think it is bit more complicated than you think. It not just the weight but the distribution of the weight in three dimensions. It’s a calculus problem not an addition problem. But it is something your architect can help you with. He can build a 3D model of you boat when it it almost completed and them make small adjustments if it is significantly out of balance. I would worry so much about it now.
@TheDuracellProject

Although as a vent hole that would work, propane heavier than air and goes to the floor meaning if you have a propane leak in your house open your doors not your window! So as eventful that would work!

Does a marine examiner have to keep visiting to assess what you have done for insurance purposes? Seems that third party data would assist in insurance cover costs later?

I assume hand-laid sections are the same as vacuumed sections except without vacuuming of course. My question is where does the extra 1kg / m2 of epoxy go when the vacuum is applied - is it into the other cloths you place on top of the laminations? Great project BTW, and the videos too!

Yes it is absorbed by the breather clothe

Plenty of detail on weights, but hopefully you have also recorded the distance from the balance point of the boat to give you the moment of the material added and taken away ? Or is that the calculation that the architect will make ( apologies, but I’m in aviation and I think the theories are similar )

Yes the weight is also recorded in a position on the boat

Does the mix ratio change with higher or lower temperature , moisture in the air? Basically with the changes that all four seasons bring, do you adjust the mixture of hardener in your epoxy? Does your new toy have the ability to mix your epoxy to those needs? Impressive project btw. Will stay put to follow. Cheers Andreas

With polyester or vinyl ester resin you can adjust the amount of hardener to make the cure happen faster or in different temps. My epoxy is always a 2:1 ratio. I have slow/medium/fast hardeners for different speeds, or in colder temps I use faster hardeners.

could the 3rd Sloped compartment be used as a Fender Storrage? almost like an angled whineshelf so you can drop them from the top into it with a drain hole near the bottom? so you dont have to run past the doghouse to the front were normally the stuff is thrown in a locker near the anchor locker at the very bow?

Too small for fenders. My guess right now is there will be electronics in it.
