I'm noticing a lot of comments about the fuel tank only being on one side. I should have addressed this more in the video. There will be another fuel tank in case this one goes bad. And the boat will be balanced out by both the galley and the salon area being on the starboard size, opposing the fuel tank on the port side.

As the fuel is being used, a starboard list will increase. Will there be a ballast system?

There are hours of explanation and demo ahead for content to ease our concerns, that said.... I would hope you prevent leaking and slosh with epoxy liner coatings and baffles. Check out Sailboat story and the 2 vessels Ben has had to address leaking tanks and access issues! I have walked away from boats after finding aluminum tanks under floorboards and water, rust etc in the bilge...
@chasingsunsets380
@chasingsunsets380 2 жыл бұрын
I sailed on a boat that had a balast tank to balance the fuel tank. It was a pain as the boat uses so little fuel per hour you do not need to balance until a couple hundred pounds of fuel are used. But the automatic system thought when you were heeled over it needed to balance. So it got replaced with manual control, which did not get used much.
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the fuel tank weight will vary by 150 gallons * 7.1 lbs per gallon = 1065 lbs. If it is properly counterbalanced when full, it won't be when empty. It is not the end of the world if you go through with it. But it sure would be nice to get it closer to being balanced. Maybe you could at least have 35 gallons on starboard and maybe 115 on port, and you can always use up the port-side fuel first. Also, much of the time you might not need to keep the 115 gallon side full, so practically, it would be rare to have much of a list.
@chasingsunsets380
@chasingsunsets380 2 жыл бұрын
@@mckenziekeith7434 that is true, my comments is about a auto system. You do not consume much fuel an hour, maybe 6 to8 pounds, so that tank is not need to be messed with but maybe every few days if you are doing a lot of motoring. Then you have to figure out how much you have used and pump that much out and if you are sailing and are heeled over it gets complicated. Plus when you are sailing trim can be a relative subject till you dock

Just my intuition on the tank... lots of free surface effect in one big tank (no doubt there will be baffles), but you're risking all fuel in one tank (if there were a leak or contamination), it will be sloshing around just under the double bed too! I guess you've done the weight and balance for all that fuel on one side. Sorry to be so critical, but it just raises questions that you've no doubt thought through!

I saw a huge sticker coming by from Awl Grip. I was a yacht painter at Royal de Vries Feadship in The Netherlands for 15 years and used several brands of yacht paint. It depended on the customer which brand they felt comfortable with. I don’t know how experienced you are in painting a yacht, but Alex Seal is for less experienced painters easier to work with. It flows better than Awl Grip and it hardly runs. Use a 4mm dincup and reduce it to 14 seconds with a reducer suitable to the temperature and you can use an airmix or an airless pump, and you can’t go wrong! Keep up the good work!

Hi Matt, Looking at your pile of old sails, you should try to prevent any damages from mice! My dad boat mainsail had major such damages during a winter. A solution could be to store them on ladder hanging from the ceiling, instead than on the floor. Also, to use ultrasound devices that prevent them from coming to close to your sails!
@jamescorriveau6121

I would say even though you addressed having other stuff on the other side I would still do 2 smaller tanks. For one reason your balance won’t change as your fuel in the tanks is depleted. Additionally it offers redundancy in the case one tank gets diesel bug or water in the tanks. I would also highly recommend baffles in the tanks and inspection ports in the top of the tanks for future cleaning or repairs. One final thing as you know having the weight to center laterally & lengthwise will give you the best motion at sea. I would seriously consider moving the placement of those tanks. In another note if you have the room and it wont mess with the sail plan why not do a big sliding hatch on the roof? It will add some nice ventilation at anchor and offer future access if you need to replace any appliances or equipment inside. The only concern of course would be making it weatherproof but its done all the time on smaller versions of the same thing.

For any fuel/water tanks, if you are having them made then have the welder install anti-liquid "slosh" baffles in them. It makes them "waveless" containers.
@SVHahalua

One thing you may consider is adding some noise abatement around the tank. The tank is under a bed on a boat that will constantly be in motion. Even with baffles in the tank the fuel will slosh around will create noise in certain fill levels. I only know this because our fuel tank is next to our bed.

Just fyi I've been part of the design and build of composite yachts and other boats that have integral diesel tanks. These boats are vacuum infused vinylester. We would add a special layup inside the tanks but it wasn't anything crazy. The tanks were always hydrotested. I know of some smaller boats that have integral tanks and they use a paint on product inside too. Aluminum tanks are the tried and true method so probably makes sense for you. But if they happen to be cost prohibitive or something, there are other options. Keep up the great work!

Comment from the boat design peanut gallery: sooooo much free surface in that tank! I’m sure you know that tall, skinny tanks are much safer and better for dynamic performance than wide, flat tanks. That’s why nobody carries water in a cookie sheet :) Also, offsetting a tank with a static mass will mean that you are always out of trim. Unless you can arrange to keep the tank full 100% of the time… Another tank that empties as the voyage progresses is a good balance. Anyway, a good tank builder can mitigate the sloshing problems with adequate internal baffles. I wish you had a better spot for the tank (centerline, tall space), But that is a small problem compared to many you have already solved well. It is so inspiring to follow your relentless progress! You both are awesome :)

Love the content. This project really excites me. with the deisel tanks how about using the large tank for storage and fitting a couple of smaller tanks as day tanks. The idea is that fuel is scrubbed and polished from the main tank into the day tanks ensuring clean fuel only runs through the generator. Keep up the great work.

I’ve been enjoying the updates. I wonder if the fairly low profile tank will be more likely to lead to air in the fuel line if things are sloshing around when it is half full? Maybe a smaller day tank will take care of that problem. I agree with another comment on the advice to make two 75 tanks that fit into the same space and are linked, then they can be serviced anytime. That is how the water tanks were done on our Express 37. I just did a week long cruise and it had me thinking about the cockpit benches in your last video. We have shorter than recommended backs, but I find it very comfortable anyway. The angles on yours look about right. Our Express 37 backs are a little too sloped back.

Looking at the mockup of the cockpit benches, it occurred to me that you might want to have at least one bench or other seating oriented athwartship in the cockpit for times when you are heeled a bit. Then you wouldn't have to sit to leeward and have your back against the side of the cockpit all time or (alternatively) sit on the high side and constantly work to keep from sliding off the bench. Then I saw the "cat trampoline". You could rig something similar to mount across the cockpit when you are underway and want to lay down athwartship or simply sit in it. It wouldn't have to be a hard bench. Sure it sounds crazy, but as you know sometimes (like in a seriously pitching sea) being oriented athartship when laying down is more comfortable than fore and aft. We always preferred the athwartship helm seat when underway for that reason, even if Otto was driving. Besides, you have all that salvaged stuff to do something with. We are enjoying your channel from Priday Harbor (actually Sucia Is. today) where we live and keep our trawler, Iron Wind. Just back from two months in B.C. Obviously, with that boat name we are sailors gone wrong. What an exciting project you have. Fair Winds.

Why not build the fuel tank as part of the boat? My own boat has this and it is superb. You can also do the same for water tanks. You coat the inside with a potable quality two pack Polyurethane that makes it drinking water safe. If you build tanks like this you never have to worry about corrosion. The tank will likely be lighter. There is no inaccessible areas where you can't get to. 600mm access lids mean you can get I side to clean. There is nothing not to like. The tank can be used as a structural member and bunk base. Add core to the top to make it insulated.

Not ever owning a boat myself, but surely would it not be better to have two smaller tanks which can be isolated if one goes off. I have heard that two fuel tanks that go into a running tank is ideal. I think I heard this from the Kracken boat designer builder....Having one big tank that will be near impossible to remove if there are issues is asking for trouble, particularly if it splits or starts to leak. We had the same issue in some armored vehicles and had to near strip the whole interior to remove a hydraulic oil tank.

Use the old fuel tanks for blackwater and greywater. Buy new Polyethylene freshwater tanks. (Even if the angle is a bit off it´s a lot faster and cheaper to have the tanks cut to shape than building a complete new set, as long as you clean them well before welding.) Alternative to cutting the tanks is to build supports that will take the shape of the tank, and accept a little wasted volume...

Hello I seen one of your videos before on this project and I forgot the name of it and it just showed up again and I watched it I wanted to subscribe last time so I did it this time and I read every comment on this one I take it most of the viewers don't read any of the comments because they're always asking the same question giving the same suggestions giving the same opinions but that's okay it's all good feedback. The only thing I would say about the tanks as I would divide them up into 2 or three tanks and I always connecting to each one will fill the next one in line like big rigs have when I was a truck driver I noticed we had a few crossover line to the other tank they were 150 gallon tanks that's a lot of weight 150 gallons. And the tank builder even if you make it the same big size or divided into two or three they will still put baffles in it anyway and they will have round cutouts in the baffles to reduce sloshing. Anyway just thought I would add that but to remember when the fuel level goes down you're still going to be some offset on the opposite side of the boat from weight reduction when the fuel is consumed and you're talking about putting a big generator that's going to be a lot of weight I'm sure you got that figured out I'm not telling you what to do I'm just giving my undivided attention LOL but I I like the style of the sailboat it's really nice. Anyway I'll be waiting for your next video thank you for sharing your project with us that's a lot of work even doing just a small things can take a lot of time and thinking of how to build something. Aluminium tanks create cold bridges during winters and in colder climates, which can cause condensation build up inside the tanks unless they are completely full at all times. Moisture allows the growth of diesel bug which in turn clogs filters and in severe cases block fuel pumps and injectors causing engine failure. Better to build your tanks in plastic instead or any other suitable material.

I think two, smaller stainless or integral tanks would be better, than one large aluminium. Also, I would be concerned about it being beneath the bunk, from the noise of sloshing fuel and potential odours. I'm wondering how you will balance the boat from side to side, very large crew permanently in the two sea berths, may have it's drawbacks. The fore and aft trim should be match side to side. Good to hear you are planning on minimising the use if track. Having sailed on an Open 60, rigged entirely with soft shackles, not only was the boat very quiet, but the visibility of the rigging and soft shackles had been a significant factor in it's success (and finishing) a tough Vendee Globe. Sponsor and KZbin Ads are fine, I understand they contribute to your income stream.

This is a good thought. But I lived on a boat for 2 years where my bunk was above a diesel tank. There was no odor whatsoever from the tank (there never would be unless the tank leaks). And the baffles in the tank prevented it from making any sloshing noises that I could hear. I guess part of it may be that when the boat is rolling back and forth, there will be some sloshing noises from the sea on the hull, and these are much louder than the sloshing noises from the tank, so you just don't hear it. In any event, it was never a problem.

I have read most of the comments below and concur with some of the concerns re the fuel tankage. My experience with aluminium tanks is not good and I agree with the suggestion of going with stainless steel instead. As you have noted you will try to balance the weights by having fuel tanks on port and starboard and the additional weights of the gallry equipment will assist. Two comments arise - can you share a plan of how the accommodation will be arranged - the diagrams you have shown already are great but still not clear where things will be placed. Secondly - why include two pilot berths on starboard when there is an opportunity to mirror image the port layout leaving you with two cabins with double berths, and removing the problem of having two identical fuel tanks (one port and one starboard). As this is a cruising boat there is no real need for small pilot berths and the choice of sleeping on port or starboard berths would be determined by the current tack you were sailing. Keep going - love what you are doing - especially the explanations on what and why you are doing things.

Could you have a section of roof that "pops up" so making it possible to walk down into dog house erect? Such a thing could also double as ventilation when popped up at anchor?

On my calculation you are putting 1000 pounds of fuel on the port side to be offset by the galley/saloon on the starboard side. What happens when you are low on fuel? Not a lot of thought gone into your design. You have the original tanks work with them.

How does aluminum do around salt water or just salt with humidity? I live near the Great Lakes, so I don’t know a lot about ocean sailing. I didn’t watch closely enough, but if the fuel tank does leak, will it be contained by a bulkhead? Will there be baffles inside the tank to keep the fuel from sloshing around a lot? How far will 150 gallons take the boat do you estimate? I would guess that it will only be full at the start of long ocean crossings. And I do like the idea of a convertible dog house…

I do not know if you have taken into account in your fuel tank size that it has to also be small enough to be able to take it into and out of your cockpit via the door. Of course at this stage of construction this is not a problem however further down the line you may need to make repairs and you dont want to be welding an hopefully empty aluminum fuel tank in situ.

You might want to look into the various studies that have tested and compared generator, battery, electric motor vs direct diesel engine. Because of the darn 2nd law, it's actually more efficient to just run a direct diesel engine. It's pretty interesting to see study results that add up the power conversion losses from gen ->bat->motor Unless something has changed, there's a reason none of the large commercial transport fleets have adopted that system I admit I was like everyone else who thought, yeah, keep the Gen going at a steady rpm with no load (other than alt), charge batts and run motor. Voila, right? Nope, direct drive at steady rpm, cut out the middle man. Still, either way you'll have the proper diesel tankage. It cracks me up seeing the earnest efforts of those using solar consistently fail As always,what are commercial boats using/doing? You know because you're in the biz. If there was a cheaper, more efficient means, people would have jumped yesterday Instead, it's the same old, same old because you can't beat physics. I think only uranium surpasses the energy density of diesel.

@@TheDuracellProject it would be great if you could put together a few episodes where you review studies, interview researchers, etc It's all out there; I think a lot is drowned out by the green marketing mania, but as you know, fishermen, ferries, the whole range of commercial craft still use 100 year old tech Think how fast everyone would switch to gen-batt-motor if it actually delivered superior results It's the same thing in truck transport. Wanna ship something to the other coast? It goes in a diesel big rig, often times a KW/peterbilt from your neck of the woods (across the sound)

Solar, wind, and regen can offset the losses and placement of smaller components will improve livability, esp in a long, skinny, shallow boat. Plus, you can choose when you run the generator; the engine, not as much. Think ending a passage in a quiet moorage at night.
@larkangel6593
@larkangel6593 2 жыл бұрын
@@billvanvlack117 as the Euros are now finding, renewables are ineffective to the extent they are utterly incapable of providing even a fraction of the necessary power to run a modern economy For Europe, the future is once again nuclear power. For local transit cars and trucks, it's battery powered vehicles charged off these nuke grids But for long haul shipping, whether boats or trucks, it's diesel fueled motors, not wind, solar, regen or other fanciful promises The reason is quite simple, as newton's 2nd law explains. Every conversion, every device, every connection, every run of cable, every extension, creates a net energy loss (drop). Therfore the most efficient systems are those devices that most directly connected ie direct drive diesel. It's why batt powered local vehicles work (as long as they can be recharged when off duty) because the wheel is driven directly by the motor Now, this is not to say Duracell cannot put together an exotic "renewable" kind of system, but that's more of a marketing, audience reach and entertainment decision that plays to the current fad However. Matt seems like a practical engineer, so maybe he'll take the most logical, pragmatic approach, which is what every commercial boat in Pugent sound is using There's an audience for that as well by just focusing on real solutions instead of playtime fantasies
