I wouldn’t say completely overshadowed. Rock N’ Roll Kids by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan is probably our best winning Eurovision song (it won the contest in ‘94). 🇮🇪🏆 Also I was born the eve of the 1994 Eurovision so I’m a day older than Riverdance. 😉😂

You absolutely do NOT have to host Eurovision if you win. You can just flat out refuse, but most would not refuse it because it's such a big event and honor.

The state of the economy can sometimes feature in the reason why a winning nation declines hosting duties. During the recession of the 2010s, many EU countries literally couldn't afford to host, or justify the expense of hosting. I think Ukraine being unable to host because of the war is the first time a nation hasn't been able to host due to an actual conflict.

Eurovision is huge in Australia, and we were admitted to the competition about six years ago (from memory). We've done really well but not won yet. I'm not sure if we will unless it comes down to a choice between some countries that all hate each other and us in the top few. But you should check out the Aussie entries. Yes, we're about as far from Europe as can be, but we joined anyway. The gay community down here have watch parties for the whole thing, and it's a heap of fun! Check it out!

@@drychaf Kate is amazing. Yes, it was fantastic. She's got such an amazing voice and to do it all on that pole (ahem...) was outstanding! Dami Im's performance was also amazing. And Guy Sebastian. It's probably got a lot to do with the Aussie culture and the fact we're so multicultural. But we're also a lucky country that is rich and can afford to really go after things we decide to set our minds to. And let's not forget there's also an international relations/political benefit to being everyone's friend. That is also a part of it. :)

I strongly believe that the gay bias is Eurovision's greatest weakness, as it strongly limits its appeal to a section of society rather than encompass society as a whole. I understand and appreciate inclusiveness within any event is a positive but there is a delicate balance to be had. If on your pursuit of inclusiveness you tip the balance to far in one direction you risk it becoming an event that appeals to a particular group to the exclusion of all others.

My favourite year was 2007 as I was at university watching with international students too. European students were already looking forward to it, other students from non Eurovision parts of the world were baffled. The UK entered "flying the flag" which was a bizarre load of double entendres. Ukraine entered someone dressed in sparkly silver head to toe, with the head including some sort of foil star. Singing "lasha tumbai" which was claimed was Mongolian for milkshakes or something. But it sounded suspiciously like "Russia goodbye" and the shouted "ruskie,ruskie, no no no!" Didn't do much to convince. The Russians were angry. My Spanish friend asked "why is there a man woman thing dressed in tin foil?" Eurovision is chaos. Love it

Verka Serduchka is basically a (drag)queen of Eurovision. It's been already 15 years, hundreds of performers, but her's stands out to this day. The lyrics "lasha tumbai" is just gibberish, but last year the permorer actually changed that to "russia goodbye"

I remember. I think ukraine came 2nd that year it was very popular and uk second from bottom as usual. In the 70s and 80s UK was always in top 4 but since 2000 when contest doubled from eastern european countries entered we usually come.bottom apart from 2022 when uk came second.

I actually voted for them and also Blind Channel (Finland) in 2021. Not because I'm Swedish, but because that kind of music speaks well to me 😉🤘. I did vote for Australia twice as well, just because I enjoyed the songs. And I'm one of those who barely watch Eurovision or basically never vote. Those times were exceptions.

Ukraine won Eurovision last year (for obvious reasons) but due the ongoing war they’re unable to host the competition in their home country for safety reasons. So the UK, who was the runner-up country from last year, are hosting it on Ukraine’s behalf in the city of Liverpool. 🇺🇦🇬🇧

As a big fan of Eurovision for more than 20 years (I am not European) I think Geography Now's video is pretty accurate, except for one thing: not everybody wants to see the trolls. Actually, that is what brings new people to the Eurovision family but once you know how the contest works you really appreciate the serious entries more than troll ones.

If there's any year you actually should watch Eurovision it is this year. All countries brought their A+ games and it really showcases all genres and vibes of each country. There's like 2 troll songs (they are kind of decent though), but the other 35 are SOLID! And the story about Australia is actually quite cute. Apparenty Eurovision had a huge following down under and lots of people had watch parties like 6AM to follow it. So after being dedicated fans for years, they simply got invited to join. And OH BOY were they happy to join. And OH BOY were Europe happy that they were happy. So from that point they have been regarded as Europes long distance bestie. They don't have the geography, but they have the spirit. And we love them for it.

The troll entries were mainly from the 00s, because it was 100% televote then and silly troll songs appealed to the audience. When the juries were reintroduced in the 2010s, the amount of troll songs decreased because the juries tanked them. Nowadays you can still get goofy songs or songs with bizarre subject matter, but no trolls songs like what is shown in the clips. If a country doesn’t want to win, they can withdraw from the contest. Or, if they’re just not bothered participating can bring in huge viewing figures (like Germany currently is and how the UK had previously been), they can put in zero effort and enter the most mediocre thing you’ve ever seen which would be instantly forgettable and score 0 points.

Last year this was watched by 161 million people. Verka Seduchka at 3:32 and the Russian grannies at 9:48 were both much loved entries. Lordi winning it in 2006 was the first time a rock song won.

Regarding original song...for some it meant start of their carreer, getting known or at least breakthrough. The best example...ABBA with Waterloo in 1974! First song under the acronym and one of the first to break with tradition of ballads/ romantic songs to up-beat ones the competition became so known for. Céline Dion became famous throughout Europe only after her participation and winning of Eurovision in 1988 with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.

From what I've gathered, there are a lot of Eurovision fans in Australia and them joining the contest was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition, and I guess as a token of good will. But I think what sets Australia from the US in terms of joining, is that I think the Australian people have a better understanding of what Eurovision is. Also, favorite thing about Eurovision to me is the cultural aspect as well as the whole 'anything goes' content, it's just one big celebration of music and unity and it brings me so much joy every year

There is actually a comedy film relating to Eurovision starring Wil Ferrell called Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga which is worth a watch. We normally put on buffet of international food when Eurovision is on and have cocktails :)

America actually have done their own version of Eurovision where all 50 US states, the District of Columbia and the five US territories take part. It’s called The American Song Contest. A K-Pop artist from Oklahoma won the first contest in 2022.

The five countries that are guaranteed annual entry into the Eurovision Song Contest have that privilege because they founded the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which owns and runs the contest.

The winning country doesn't HAVE to host the following year, though they get first refusal and it's rare for anybody to turn it down. Rare as in it hasn't happened since the 1970s (even Ukraine wanted to host it, but the European Broadcasting Union said "seriously dudes, we're not putting five thousand people into a hall in a literal warzone". I paraphrase...). But they can turn it down if they want to.

Ireland sent the Puppet after they had won twice in a row '92 and '93 and they didn't want to win again as the competition would bankrupt RTE! the broadcators cover the costs of this truly massive event that takes a week to get to the finals, the BBC is paying anround £17 million this year!

From this here Brit... Eurovision is probably the most gloriously OTT, camp, and flamboyant of predominantly European countries battling it out to be the greatest Euro musical entry of the year! But it is honestly so crap, that its actually beautiful, amazing, and utterly hilarious. It's kind of like having some sort of hallucinogenic fever dream in a musical environment where anything goes 😂 Most of the entries are super cheesy and will make you forehead slap like no other, but thats the beauty of it - sheer unadulterated silly light hearted fun! I wouldn’t say countries send troll entries specifically to avoid winning. The countries that have the longest history/most of joke entries host their own national competitions where the people and juries choose the winner. Each vote costs money so as an individual I don’t vote for a song that deliberately sucks, I vote for one that’s highly entertaining (altho perhaps a bit shite). This is the case for national competitions though, some countries choose their representatives internally and in that case the plan to lose might be a very real lol.

YOU SHOULD WATCH MORE OF EUROVISION !!!! it’s my favourite thing in the entire world, i first got into the Junior Eurovision (same thing but it’s a competition for kids logically) in 2014 and then started watching the original contest in 2016. i can’t explain the amount of joy, excitement and all of these overwhelmingly positive feelings that hit me when spring time comes, May starts (the month of Eurovision) and especially when i hear the opening intro on these three special nights. (since you have first semi-final, second semi-final and grand final) Eurovision really is one big inside joke between us. only those who truly follow the contest can understand how special it is (not even saying Europeans bc not every person on the continent cares about it ofc, depends on the country) it’s not just a song competition, it is a whole emotion. an annual adventure. i suggest listening to as many Eurovision songs as possible (you’ll be surprised to find out you’ve heard some of them way before) and watching some editions, like 2016 or 2021 which are the absolute BEST not just imo.

If I remember correctly Israel is part of EBU (european broadcasting union) and can therefore be part of the competition. Australia got to take part to celebrate the 60th contest, and they've just stayed in the competition.

Australia Israel Georgia Azerbaijan and Armenia that participate (well some have withdrawn for political or ecomomical reasons among them is Turkey) are part of the EBU which is the network that televises the competition. As for the competition itself yeah it's a battle and study in International politics (well european lol) and European relations. Actually as a part of the curriculum in my departement we are encouraged to watch it (plus the two semi finals) and jote notes and we then discuss things( I'm 5 year in Internationa regional and European studies here in Athens Greece). For example 2021 Britain and Germany got the absolute zero which musicaly was a bit unfair but politically it made total sense.

1. Eurovision is NOT Europe, The Eurovision Song Contest is a music contest for composers, lyricists and songwriters. The contributions will be performed by vocal performers and dancers. Since 1956, it has been organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) as part of Eurovision. The inspiration for this came from the Sanremo Festival, which was founded in 1951. The broadcasters of all EBU countries are eligible to participate in the ESC. The majority of this broadcasting union is made up of European countries and some radio and television stations from neighbouring West Asian and North African countries. The ESC reaches over 180 million viewers every year..Every EBU member has the right to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, but there is no obligation.According to the EBU, Australia competed in 2015 as a one-time anniversary guest and qualified directly for the final. Since 2016, Australia has continued to participate in the competition as an associate member of the EBU, contrary to previous statements. However, since then, the Australian entry has to qualify for the final show in the semifinals. Should Australia win, however, the ESC will not be held there, but in a European partner country, which the responsible broadcaster SBS can freely choose.

Eurovision song contest is absolutely a guilty pleasure for me. Sure there is plenty of camp stuff going on, i'd say its about 50/50 camp vs serious, but it generally is all good fun. The festival is all about equality, unity and inclusiveness and it has helped a great deal in settling international political struggles, be it in showing forgiveness, or be it in the form of support for a nation that is struggling. On one hand the contest is non-political, on the other hand however.. it's one of the most political things you'll ever see... only without politicians. I read that the USA, Canada, Mexico and likely a few more mid and southern American nations, are looking into creating a similar show with similar goals hoping to bring nations together more than they are now. Eurovision has a proven track record when it comes to "does this actually work?", case in point.. the contest helped, for instance, Germany to become trusted and loved again in Europe, i'd say that's a pretty big deal if you take recent history in account. PS. yes Finland won with that song, but it wasn't a joke and it actually a dang good song too, the band is called Lordi and the song is "Rock n Roll Hallelujah". Fun fact, Lordi and Nightwish, both from Finland, are .. for a lack of a better description.. pop artists? meaning the are part of mainstream music there, their music in played on the radio, charts in the top 40, and they score hits, just like Bieber and Ariane Grande do.. only their music is a whole lot better than that of the 2 actual "pop icons" i mentioned ;) PS PS. Australia can take part in the contest because they are basically part of the European and British broadcast system, a leftover from when the UK still had some say there. So they can enter on a technicality, but were only recently actually allowed to enter the contest because of the popularity in Eurovision in Australia (it's massive there). In case they would win tho, they cannot/are not allowed to host the contest as the contest has to be held in the European time zone(s).

I can understand the polarising views of Australia being a part of Eurovision. For a lot of us Aussies though, Eurovision is one of those ways to tie us back to our European roots. Over half of Australia’s population is of European decent, with a big flood of European migrants post WWII. Both my wife and I are decedents from migrants from this period (Italy and Slovenia) and have religiously watched Eurovision every year, throwing a Eurovision party that all our friends and family get together for, for over a decade. It’s something that brings us all together, celebrating our European multiculturalism, the variety of music, culture, and craziness that Eurovision brings. Australia as a nation had passionately watched every year for over 30 years before they were invited to participate (over half the entire lifetime of the show) and had grown into having its own voting system as part of the entertainment, etc, so I think in a way Australia proved that it was a true fan for the long-haul way before participation was ever considered.

There have been winners who became famous as a result, such as ABBA, or were already famous, such as Céline Dion. Something else which began as a peace festival after WWII is the annual Llangollen International Eisteddfod. This is a week-long festival of music, dance, and culture which has been held in the small Welsh town each June since 1947. Over the years, over 400,000 singers, choirs, dance troups, musicians, orchestras, etc from over 100 countries have performed and competed and lived and made friends in the town. Pavarotti sang there with his local choir back in 1955, long before he was famous, and he returned for a concert in 1995. There are youtube videos.

Let's give some clarifications. The competition was born taking inspiration from the Sanremo Festival (event of 6 years more). The idea of EuroVision came from an Italian journalist and with the help of the director of the EBU (today the same institution is called EBU) of French origin. It was originally supposed to take place in Italy but RAI, Italy's public television network, didn't quite believe in the project. The principality of Monaco was thought of but the costs would have been too high. It was decided that the first country to host the event was in Lugano in Switzerland where the official language was Italian. Informally the contest was known as the "Eurovision Song Contest" and the main focus of the contest was on the musical aspect. In recent years the competition has been called Eurovision Song Contest or ESC precisely to underline the importance not only of singing and music but also of entertainment. Sometimes the quality of the music also wins, other times more fun. There are exchange votes between culturally close countries but for reasons of cultural rather than political proximity. Italy won 3 times and not 2. Last information. There is no first prize. Competitors participate in the competition to make themselves known even outside their own national audience. ESC is the best but also the best of Trash. Once you start watching it you won't stop :-)

The jury is political and not the public votes. Also there rarely are "troll" contestants. They just package serious songs in a fun way. Greece's "Alcohol is free" was about the 2008 financial crisis and Greece's near bankruptcy.

I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine to we had a blast at least. I feel that America would take this to seriously and just want to win. Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.

so the US did a US song contest last year, Eurovision is funded by Goverments, TV broadcasters, Local councils, ticket sales and entrance fees from all countries. The US model seemed to get all there funding from T mobile and making a 1 night event into a 10 week show where you hear the songs so much and they barely change the performance that your done with it by the end

Here in the uk my family all get together for Eurovision and get some beers in, Then we all put £5 each in a pot and chose a country to win, it’s winner takes all the money, and if none of us win then the money goes to a local charity, great fun, a great night, and most of the time the charity wins the money.

I love your reactions but OMG his video was terrible. First loads of things that were inacurate. The winning country traditionally hosts next year but is NOT obliged too. It is offered and if declined the Country who came second may be offered. This year its being held in Liverpool, Uk as Ukraine won and for obvious reasons cant host. I am so annoyed that over the entire 66 years (minus canx due covid) he picked every crap song which probably makes up 1%. So many amazing songs have won and even some great ones that didn't. He was totaly taking the piss out of it and not in a good way. To give you and idea of how big it is the superbowel audience last year was 95 million for Eurovision double it and then some, around 230 million. ABBA, who shook up the competition by winning in 1974, were huge in Australia and the Australians became big fans of Eurovision and started to transmit it in the 80's. In about 2000 i think one sation got to transmit it live. So as a thank you for their support they were asked to submit an entry for the 60th show. Since then they have continued to compete but have to take part in the semi finals. Below is a link to a compilation video of the winners. Now we got the to be roasted background out of the way, I hope you The Beard also ckecks out the winners/ second place of the total run like other KZbinrs did. The extravaganza you mentioned and saw... only 2000+ I would say. Focus on performance over song in the 90's. The outfits mid-70's and beyond. The simple approach was in the 60's and IMO 60's and early 70's is still similar with what US released so you will like that the most. Later ones you will have fun with and still gems to be found. When it comes to winning...yeah often rigged.

The "stinkin' cool" one - Finland (duh!) in 2006. Only metal entrance up until last few years. The one always individually recommended to KZbinrs just for the difference with what people usually think of when it comes to Eurovision/ Europop.

Nobody deliberately sucks so that they can loose. If you don't want to win - you can just opt out from competing. A lot of countries take year here and there off because they can't afford it.

To say that the big 5 always send entries that kinda suck on purpose is truly unfair, especially considering that my country (italy) has been in the top 10 several times since 2012, and has won a couple years ago too 😂😂
