I'm glad these products exist. I've been using an Alesis Command module, but only to trigger samples in Bitwig. It's served its purpose, but found it limiting, now that I'm I building a hybrid kit. So now I finally ordered a MegaDrum, a similar product that's been out for quite a while, but even more niche than the eDRUMin or the DDTI. Definitely looking forward to having 27 dual-zone inputs instead of 5.

Great review. I own an edrumin 10 and I love it. Yes, you do need some knowledge VSTs, Midi, and how drum brains work but, as the author says, this is all learnable stuff. I use it with Steven Slate Drums and kit composed of Alesis and Roland drum triggers, and Aegean low volume cymbals. It's a joy to play because the edrumin works so well. It won't absolutely eliminate absolutely all your triggering problems since some of that is due to the triggers themselves, but it does an amazing job.

Thanks, your excellent review has helped me determine that an eDRUMin 10 is a far more affordable and functional choice than a full drum module, as I will be doing an electronic conversion of an acoustic kit and exclusively triggering VI sounds on a Mac (e.g. SSD5).

Wow I just found out about this product today, thanks for the in-depth review, this looks amazing. I have a pretty cool frankenstein drumkit which started out as a super basic Hart Dynamics (RIP) kit that I've added pieces to over the years. But I'm still going through an old Alesis DM5 module into my PC to trigger various VSTs (mostly AD2 and NI kits). The DM5 works well enough just as a trigger module, but it's very limiting. This edrumin gear looks like exactly what I need to be able to expand further and exploit the additional features of my sample libraries that I don't really get to enjoy.

Thanks Luke, another great and very detailed review. For me it'll be the way of reasonably limitless future expansion for SD3 VST, Mimic and digital pads. It would be very interesting to know your and Rob"s thoughts on MIDI 2 that I keep hearing about and whether this will be a future implementation on the eDRUMin product.
@TheeDrumWorkshop

Thank you for watching! Yeah, absolutely - I'll be picking one up when they're back in stock. As for MIDI 2.0 - to be honest, I've not done that much reading up on it but I've yet to see much of an advantage over the current MIDI standard for eDrums specifically. For velocity and position, we don't need more than 128 values as it's imperceptible. But I really ought to fully look into it as there's probably some stuff I'm missing.
@bobjenkins4110

@@TheeDrumWorkshop Thank you for your reply Luke. Since then I have done some in depth looking at Midi 2 and I can see some advantages for more sensitive human expression down the line not least for CC info etc. I was wondering if you became aware of less latency going from eDrumin trigger to your VST rather than sending from Mimic or Roland modules ? as from my TD50 triggereing of SD3 I have round trip latency down to 1.5ms but I can feel that as opposed to directly triggering and monitoring from the Mimic or Roland. I noticed also that you use a BT1 for Xstick and was wondering if the rim sound or Xstick function from Roland digital snare pad worked, or is that exclusively a facility from the Roland module ? Apologies if you've already answered some of the same queries from others, I have have read through many of your replies but don't have the time to read all of them. I really appreciate your help and guidance.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I'll have to do some more reading into it! As I said in the review, the speed/latency of the eDRUMin is about on par with using a good module like a Roland to trigger VSTs. Are you sure about that latency value? Roland modules typically have about 3ms as a standard - it typically takes whatever the "scan time" is set to plus a little more to process the trigger signal before it sends the data out. As a standard, Roland us usually set to at least 2ms of scan time, some presets might be higher. You can decrease the scan time to sub-2ms levels but you usually start getting bad performance if you go too low. So the eDRUMin's scan time value will do the same - this is just how long it takes to read the waveform and any increase in scan time (on the eDRUMin or Roland module) will increase the overall latency. If you want to use positional sensing, you will need to have the value set to at least 2.3ms. Then you've got your computer's latency in the mix. I doubt you'd perceive any difference between using either device unless you had to increase the scan time of the trigger settings because of an awkward pad or something.
@bobjenkins4110
@bobjenkins4110 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheeDrumWorkshop Thanks for your swift reply Luke, sorry I was quoting the "round trip" 1.5ms from module to SD3 and back and not including the initial typical latency from module, which as you correctly point out is always there. Great that you confirm that eDRUMin performs on a par with modules as Roland and Mimic. It means I can think of replacing my Roland with a couple of eDRUMin10s to get more trigger inputs that I require and still retain my digital pads too, once that is, when they become available in numbers to satisfy demand.

Fantastic video, Luke. Earlier today I went out to the Audio Front site because I wanted to download the manual for this amazing little box, and wouldn't you know it! For the eDrumIn 10, the little blurb stating "Out of Stock. Get Notified," instead had a yellow "Add to Cart" button. You think I didn't whip out my wallet and purchase one most ricky-tick! Needless to say, I won't have to wait until March 2024 to get my hands on one! Needless to say. I did check the site again about 30 minutes after I purchased mine and they had sold out again. If people want one, I suggest that they religiously check the site a few times a day because over the past two weeks, this is the second batch that has went on sale.

Great video Luke, I've heard about this unit online but this really outlines it. I'm currently using my td12 on an A to E kit with Steven Slate, using goedrum triggers, stealth, gear drum and ufo triggers. What I'm really keen on is getting more out of my hi hat settings. I have a diy/goedrum dual zone switch trigger. I have heard the best in the market is SD3 which seems to have all sorts of extra features to get the best response. Do you think this would help? Keep up the great work! Joe.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I should imagine that the extra hi-hat options with this could help playability but I didn't end up testing my Goedrum controller with it due to time constraints (and the stand I use it on isn't great either so it might not have been super accurate). So I can't really say 100% for sure, but I was impressed with the playability with the FD-7 over Roland modules

Damn it... this looks perfect for me: I already only use SD3, so I have very little use for most of the features of an actual drum module. Since I'm currently looking to swap out my TD-11, primarily to get positional sensing support and I really wouldn't mind fiddling around with the trigger settings to get them right, this video made me pretty happy. Then I was made very sad when checking out their page: The 10 input version is out of stock and in the forums, the manufacturer has said he's waiting for parts, but isn't expecting to get them until October _2023_ Quite the downer for me, as this would be pretty much perfect for me and it would be considerably cheaper than getting a new module.

I have the eDRUMin 10. There's NOTHING like it for "leveling up" (taking it to the next level) triggering response as Rob said. I use it to run SD3, but I also simply then run a 5-din MIDI cable from the eDRUMin to a Mimic Pro. The software and triggering control of the eDRUMin is better than the built-in triggering features and control within the Mimic, in my opinion. I actually get better triggering customization for my needs, and additional control, out of this setup. That says a LOT, because the Mimic is already very good! Further, use of a single MIDI cable with my home kit, allows me to quickly grab the Mimic and load up my gigging kit (a DIY beater kit) and off I go, while leaving my cables and everything set up in the studio. So when I get home, I only have to plug in the Mimic's power and MIDI cables and I'm running again. Love it!
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've got an awesome setup going there! I'm definitely going to end up with one of these of my own down the line, there's just so many features that I think are useful. Using it alongside modules is certainly one of the main ones for me. I usually have everything hooked up to my TD-50 with MIDI out from there but could see this being a useful "module hub" for development, especially for the pad compatibility.
@482jpsquared
@482jpsquared 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheeDrumWorkshop "Module hub" is a great way to describe it. The only thing that might make it better would be a 12-16 input version. However, since it can perform as a MIDI host, it's easy to connect two together or multiple combinations of a 4 and/or a 10. It's too bad you couldn't get the ATV ride to work with three zones and one cable with bell sense. I have it working incredibly well - MUCH better than any analog Roland ride I've ever played.

John I think you just convinced me of a eDRUMin 10 for the SAME exact purpose. I've been recently contemplating a second module for my beater kit (which kind of funny, is high end Roland pads!) and at home my full-on Mimic Pro hooked up to my ePRO kit and ATV cymbals I never really want to tear down due to sheer number of cables and it's setup perfectly. I agree as well - the Mimic offers some pretty advanced trigger control but the eDRUMin kicks it up a notch! Hopefully it's back in stock soon!

Great vid, a couple of questions: 1) So you can hook up multiple edrumin units with each other for kit expansion through either the USB host or MIDI in ports, right? 2) When connecting digital pads through a USB host device, does this allow to circumvent the limitation of the TD27 module where the cable snake inputs become disabled when digital pads are connected to the module? Can you use the edrumin to trigger stuff in the module while having both digital pads connected to edrumin through the host AND the ride/snare snake cables connected on the module? Sorry for the messy question but basically i want a way to cheat the module into keeping both the digital and analog snare/ride inputs enabled while triggering the sounds inside the module and not that of a VST.

I think an oversight in terms of the customer here is the man with the travelling kit(s) In my band for instance, the drummer either plays an SPD-SX, or plays a TD-20 weird hybrid kit. This would allow you to easily move your module around - as you're only ever connecting power and MIDI cable to it. So he could have this setup on the main kit, and bring only the module for SPD gigs - this ensures you have EXACTLY the same sounds, no matter the show

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I've not used the 4 input version myself but as far as I'm aware it works as well as the 10, just with fewer inputs and without a couple of features like the USB Host port. So I imagine it should be great if it's what you're after. As far as "expanding" a TM-6 Pro, it depends on exactly what you mean. If you mean "can I plug the eDRUMin into my TM-6 Pro to get more sounds out of the module" then no, you can't do that because the TM-6 Pro can only play sounds that are assigned to the trigger inputs. There are only some modules that allow access to extra sounds via MIDI and none of the newer Roland ones do. I did a video on MIDI a while back on this channel that explains why some can and others can't. If you just want to run the eDRUMin through a computer or other device alongside the TM-6 Pro then that would be a different matter and would work.

Thanks! The TM-6 doesn't have any capacity to be "expanded" with MIDI, if that's what you mean. The eDRUMin 4 doesn't have a USB Host port and the TD-17 has no MIDI in port so you can't use them together, from what I remember. Even with an eDRUMin 10 though, you can't "expand" a TD-17 if you're using all of the pad inputs/zones because there is no way to trigger sounds that aren't assigned to a pad zone. You can use the 10 to trigger every available zone over MIDI if you want, but it's a pretty limited use case.

There are also some options like a second hand Roland TMC-6 or there's an Alesis one that some people really liked, but they're a lot older and probably pretty outdated nowadays. The eDRUMin's big strengths are in the software with its ease of use and features. It's a shame to hear about the shortages affecting the eDRUMin as it deserves every success.

I've not used the TMC-6 myself so can't really comment. If it helps, the software doesn't need to be running once you've got your triggers set up as it has a standalone mode - it's only for configuration that it's necessary. I understand that a lot of people prefer being able to adjust parameters with physical dials etc (I'm usually one of those people), but functionally it's pretty much the same as using a sound-less module otherwise.

Hey! Yeah, the triggers will always be controlled by whichever unit you have them plugged into. So if you're running the triggers into the eD10 then sending the MIDI into to the module, you can use the eD software to tweak trigger response while it's attached to the computer. After seeing this video, I got the eDRUMin 4 and had a terrible experience with it. It was triggering randomly constantly basically all the time, even when it was just sitting there. The only way I could get it to stop was by setting the threshold so high that you had to slam every drum to get a reaction. I was going to make a video on it, but it was so absolutely horrible I didn't want to make a video just tearing it apart. I found the software to be completely wonky, not intuitive at all, and the overall experience to be a clunky, poorly functioning device. I could have just gotten a bad unit, but I quickly returned it. If anything these devices seem to be very inconsistent.

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
OK, apologies. You won't be able to get more inputs out of the aD5 with this, no. The aD5 only allows you to trigger instruments that are assigned to the pad inputs (as far as I can remember from my time with it). This is the case with a lot of modules, there are only certain ones that allow for "extra" inputs via midi triggering (Mimic Pro, most Yamaha modules i think, many older Roland ones but not the newest). What it can potentially do is allow you to use pads that you shouldn't be able to use/don't work well via the eDRUMin's MIDI - I say potentially because I know that the Kenton USB Host didn't work properly with the aD5, but I *think* they've got the host port working for the eDRUMin with it - you'd have to check over the forums to be sure though. Other questions - I've not triggered SD3 with the TD-50 myself, but you would get very similar results with this and SD3 due to the great triggering, as long as you have the right pads. And by that I mean good quality, well made pads that will give you proper results with the hot spot suppression and positional sensing (if you want/need it) etc. The Roland digital pads are the best I've played, but you can get really close with a good analogue pad when utilising all of the features of the eDRUMin, especially if you then use a BT-1 or similar for cross-stick to give you full rim articulations. Latency - I didn't go into depth on this because a lot of people misunderstand the eDRUMin's latency vs a module. If you have the trigger settings well optimized, you shouldn't experience any noticeable extra latency compared to a Roland module. As I said in the review, the eDRUMin is FAST. The only time the unit itself really adds any noticeable latency is if you have to increase the scan time a lot to dial in a pad. However, this happens on Roland modules when you increase the scan time too. The other trigger settings won't add latency. Any other latency experienced will likely be a result of the computer/VST and the audio interface's ability. Hi-hats - the eDRUMin has some of the best tweaks for hi-hats that I've used and I feel like you can get better results than most modules with it, yeah. Digital pads - you can indeed use the digital pads with it, by using the USB Host port. You'd need a USB hub though to use more than one. Also, there are some limitations compared to using them on a Roland module. I did a video on the topic of digital pads without a Roland module a while ago, go check that out if you want to know more, but the gist is that you don't get to use trigger settings like adjusting the threshold/sensitivity etc (mine actually have a higher "threshold" when used over MIDI than on a Roland module), you don't get positional sensing with them this way and the separation between rim clicks and rim shots doesn't work fully either without a Roland module (as that feature relies on positional sensing). Hope that helps.

It didn't work very reliably when I tried it. You can adjust the head response on the Alesis pads with a knob on the side that makes it either more centre-focused or edge-focused (as there are 2 head piezos). When I adjusted towards the centre, it hot spotted more (as expected) but the PS would still jump around a bit. Not sure if the newer SE pads might be better but my guess is probably not because Roland's waveform detection is looking for something very specific.

I'm pretty sure it was to do with parts, yeah. I feel like I remember reading on the Audiofront forum that the 8 was being designed with a different board due to the chip shortages but there's a chance I'm misremembering that! The answer will no doubt be over there somewhere.

Would it expand the Roland SPD-SX? I see it would not work with Alesis Strike but no info regarding the SPD-SX...
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop Жыл бұрын
No, it wouldn't. There is no way to trigger sounds that aren't already assigned to a pad zone on the SPD-SX, so there are no "extra" sounds to trigger. All inputs can already be split with simple Y cables so you can have a pad per sound without the need for extra hardware.

I have Alesis Strike module and VH-13 roland hi hats. Those hats are not really compatable with the strike module. Could this box fix that ?
@steevidrums
@steevidrums 25 күн бұрын
Yes. You might be better off connecting more than just hihats to the edrumin and then midi-ing into the strike module. Say for example, the snare.

Just a heads up that the eDRUMin 8 is now available, just checked stocks and they have some in. I believe they designed this one to try and get around the parts shortage for the 10. It's very similar to the 10, just with 8 trigger inputs instead of 10, 1 pedal input instead of 2 and there's no DIN MIDI In port (but still has a DIN out). It's also around $72 cheaper, so it's a pretty good compromise in my opinion. You could run 2 in tandem for 16 inputs if you needed them.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop thanks! I’ll check it out. I really only need the four. Being a one-man band, I use a former foot drum snare, kick drum and percussions. I just liked how the 10 had 2 pedal inputs. I’m using a Roland TM1. And it works well with my small drum set up, guess I’m just getting bored lol edit I just realize that the four has one pedal input as well. This is perfect. I’ll get the four and keep the TM 1 for live performances when I don’t have a computer. Thanks man!

@MITCHE543 Yes, the eDRUMin 4 also has 1 pedal input. You can use a hi-hat controller pedal or some other kind of expression pedal.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop yeah it’s cool. The four is available in October. What exactly could I use the pedal input for that wouldn’t work plugged into the trigger Input ?I’m still learning about modules. In general the TM 1 was very easy to set up. Hybrid drums have been a lifesaver to make my foot drum sound like a big drum set. Crazy

For most people, it would be for controlling the hi-hat's open-to-close articulations. Hi-hat pedal controllers send a different signal so can't just be plugged into a trigger input. There are probably other uses too such as using an expression pedal to control something else with MIDI, but most average drummers running software or using a drum module wouldn't need that.

On the audiofront forum the company says this. "After I get the rest of my casings and those last 50 units are sold, I don't expect to have any more units until October 2023 at the earliest. This is very frustrating because I put in orders for parts in February 2021. Unless an angel drops a bunch of mk66fx1m0vlq18 microcontrollers on my doorstep, it's going to be a very long wait. Brutal.

I purchased the Edrumin10 to expand by Mimic Pro which is maxed out of ports. How do I hook it up without a computer and add say an extra cymbal or two? Can someone provide a basic instruction for this. Which cords do I use and where to plug them in precisely? Thanks, I am pretty new at this.
@steevidrums

You can use it in stand-alone mode via a 9v power supply like shown in the video and then connect an iPad/iphone/android device via the usb port.

Can this be used to supplement an Alesis Strike multipad to achieve a realistic hihat with a hihat controller pedal? The multipad hihat only offers open, close and chic.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think so, no. I don't own one but I imagine the open/close capability will be a limitation of the multipad, so any other hi-hat data sent into it will just be fed into the same limited hi-hat engine.
