The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In 1967, I used to live in Lahore, Pakistan. As a 9 year old child, 4th grader I visited my uncle in Sialkot, Pakistan where I first heard the song and ever since this became my favorite. The record and the player belonged to my uncle but I could not stop playing it agin and again. 57 years later while living as a retired physician in Dallas, TX with my wife, daughter, her husband and 2 beautiful grand children, while surfing the KZbin, at 11:49 pm I suddenly came across the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood "Summer wine". I do not know where those 57 years went but the sweet and refreshing taste of "Summer Wine" is still the same!

Hey I’ll be 74 this week on June 7 2024. I remember Nancy and have to agree Nancy was easy on the eyes as were a few singers and actresses like Petula Clark and Mary Tyler Moore. Glad to have been a teenager in the 1960’s. As rhey say we were in our 20’s in the 70’s and now in our 70’s in the 20’s.

I am also 74. I went to an all-girl private school. Before holidays our teachers would let us have some fun. My best friend and I would sing this song, she sang as Lee Hazelwood, and I as Nancy Sinatra. I sang solo These Boots Are Made For Walkin, and Bang Bang. Love the songs back then.

The million people who purchased "Sugar Town" in late 1966/early 1967 must have been very pleased to turn the single over and hear this gorgeous song. So amazing that the song ended up getting enough airplay to chart as a B side at #49 before being set aside by Nancy & Frank's monster duet "Something Stupid" (produced by Hazelwood), which had just been released. But Nancy & Lee would continue to release duets & hit the top 40 three times. Must have been very gratifying for Lee, who until then, had been behind the scenes writing and producing Nancy's hits.

Just found this gem from many years ago. The very beautiful and talented Nancy Sinatra and the very underrated Lee Hazlewood. He grew up in my hometown, Phoenix, Az. So good to hear it again!

Always loved this duet w/ Nancy (my childhood crush) and Lee. His voice is true baritone just as mine is. Wonderful memories! ‘She took my silver spurs a dollar and a dime….and left me craving for ….more summer wine!’

The story is excellent to follow, the lyrics and tune is fantastic, but that background music sets the dark, suspenseful tone, that is hypnotizing and exquisite!!! It hit only #49 on the Billboard Hot 100, after its Dec. 1966 release. A must have for all Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood fans! She will be 82 (!!!) this upcoming June 8 (2022). Sadly, we lost Lee at 78 to kidney (renal) cancer. Jul. 9, 1929 - Aug. 4, 2007. He was 37 and Nancy 26 in their Ed Sullivan Show appearance. This is what the art of storytelling in song is all about! Grade: A+

Summer Wine is my favorite duet of all time. Nancy is beautiful and has such a sexy voice and Lee ‘s deep sound is classic. This song is one of the best of the 60s and why that decade has never been matched.

Bellissima canzone e Lee ha una voce strepitosa abbinata a Nancy: l'avevo ascoltata per la prima volta nella soap opera tedesca "Tempesta d'Amore" e mi è rimasta nel cuore.

Very classy video that does the song justice. Nice that Ed mentions Lee being the songwriter of Nancy's hits in the introduction & even gave him solo billing at the end of the introduction. Ed always had a tough time letting Nancy go at the end of her performances & who could blame him. She was breathtaking. The usual, "Say hello to your mother & Frank".

As I see the posted version of the video, this channel edited out the intro by Ed that I reference in my prior post. Not sure why it was edited, but hopefully the information I provided will let you know how Ed introduced the performance.
