The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

From the comments--this clip is obviously a hit, and it resonate with lots of us. As I watched this broadcast in the 60’s, as a 10-year-old in the U.S., Pet Clark became my first crush 😊 Whenever I come across clips of her, she still brings a warm smile and good memories. A great and talented lady.

USMC 64--68. Sunday August 14Th 1966. I was 20 years old going on 21 and serving with the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Saratoga. We had just arrived at Her Majesty's Royal Navy Base at around 03: 30 AM at Portsmouth England coming from Norfolk Va. And as luck would have it, but not in a good way we did not get to see this episode of the Ed Sullivan show. But I still have many precious memories. God Bless.

It's not that the 60s were especially colorful, this was the era when most people had black and white TVs, so shows like this pumped color EVERYTHING as a way to convince people to buy new color sets and to make people glad that they bought them. The NBC peacock was nothing more than an ad for color TVs, and every show title sequence bragged "In Color" . . . As a result of seeing the colors like this, fashion designers splashed colors around in real life. Then, about 1972, people got bored with the circus colors, and they rapidly went away.

Learn respect. The US is the least respective country of elders. You'll change your tune in a few decades when it's your turn. @@EdKazO-Vision

@@CityLadyLA Respect is earned. And if younger people don't respect their elders or have a work ethic you approve of, I would ask "who raised them to behave that way?" You want respect? Try treating others with respect instead of just criticizing & demanding it.

@@EdKazO-Vision I am no boomer and know modern music is bland. Modern pop lacks depth of complex counterpoint, backup harmonizing, lack of good choruses, lack of creative guitar solos. 1960's music experimented with use of sitars, Hammond organs, harmonicas, theremins etc.. Plus analog sounds better. I am a musician and listen to recordings in detail and take note. The non musician also listens to details whether they are aware or not. Modern music lacks creativity instrumentally, lacks lyrical poetry, instrument diversity plus deficient in finding new beats and progressions that have not already been done long ago. The song in video is not so good by 60's standards.

I saw Petula live in Guildford in 2016 - now the *Sign of the Times* makes me think about how crazy WOKE the UK has become since 1966. 💔💔💔

Gotta give it up to CBS. When they invested in color videotape, they made sure to go all-out on the sets and clothes! 1966 being the 1st full year TESS would broadcast in color. I'm sure adults who could afford Color TV sets had a feast for the eyes. Imagine being the first on your block to watch old Ed in living color!

My cousin Ray rescued me from the pouring rain in his families black ‘59 Galaxie and this song was keeping pace with his windshield wipers like two metronomes, in and out at top speed. That’s the first time I experienced that, and to this incredible song. I was in 4th grade. Never forgot it. Thanks

How come his former wife Jackie Trent wasn't applauded as well? She wrote some of the most wonderful and inspirational lyrics to Tony's music for Petula Clark. All three were MAGNIFICENT songwriters.

Many of the singers on these newer talent shows are talented, it’s just the newer material they choose is pure crap. But agreed 100%! Petula Clark is phenomenal! Loved her music as a kid in the 1960s. Still do. I play her vinyl on our turntable.

Her, Diane Warwick and Linda Ronstat were my fav female singers from the 60's when I was just a kid. Lot's of high quality music back then. It was real artistry. No props, colored lights etc. Just pure musicianship and powerful vocals abilities. Song writing was thriving. Timeless.
