the grenade was named after the pomegranate, not the reverse. Pomegranates are obviously older, and early french grenades looked like pomegranates.

"Pomegranate" also means "Granade Apple": Pomme is apple in french and "granate" while being the literal german word for "grenade" is stil pretty close to "grenade". This all comes from the latin term "Mālum Granatum" for them. Literally "Seed apples" This is also where the wxplosive devices galled "grenades" take their name from: they started out as sacks filed with explosive "kernels" and looked like a Pomegrante, and where simelartly fiilled with lots of kernels.
@hellospringlake3 жыл бұрын
Well, to be more technical, "Pomme" used to be a generic word for all fruit before coming to mean specifically apples. So alot of older French references will say Pomme without meaning apple at all.

As I understand it, the name for grenade came from its resemblance to pomegranates, not the other way around. People have been eating pomegranates for millennia, but hand grenades are a fairly recent invention, and the oldest would basically be iron or bronze jars packed with black powder and bits of stuff to act as fragments. I could easily see people looking at the shape and overall structure and comparing them to a pomegranate.

Early hand grenades were developed by the French, it was made of glass with musket balls packed around gunpowder and when exploded it resembled a ripe pomegranate discharging its seeds. Shrapnel was named for a British military engineer who,during the Nepoleonic wars, packed musket balls into a mortar shell.

Grenadine recipe for us who can't find it in the store. Ingredients: 2 pomegranate fruits, 1 lemon, 2 dl sugar (6 oz). Open the pomegranates under water (to prevent it from squirting juice on clothes). Sort out the seeds and blend them with a hand mixer in a tall glass. Strain out the juice in a saucepan. Add lemonpeels from the lemon to the juice in the saucepan. Add sugar to the saucepan. Boil it for 15-20 minutes on low heat. Remove the lemon peels from the syrup while still hot. Press the juice out of the lemon and add it to the pomegranate syrup when it is chilled down to room temperature. Done!

"Borrowed from French grenade, from Old French grenate in the phrase pomme grenate (“pomegranate”), ultimately from Medieval Latin pomum (“apple”) + granatum (“having grains”). The -d developed in French under influence of Spanish granada." A pomegranate is an apple with grains ie. shrapnel.

@maximilianmetzner20653 жыл бұрын
The whole "granate-apple" thing is not because of the shrapnel look by the way. It's because, when pomergrenates are super ripe and they fall down from their trees, they kind of explode on impact. That's how they spread their seeds I guess.

In french "pomegranate" is just "grenade" yeah, and for some reason grenadine syrup in France is not pomegranate syrup, it's a blend a various berries, vanilla and citric acid Which is okay, but't it's literaly something else, so most (if not all) of the time when bars in France make classis american cocktail that calls for grandine, they're kinda inacurate It's not good or bad I gess, I just think it's interesting to point it out !
@billymilligan3 жыл бұрын
Looks like the name is derived from latin meaning seeded apple. The name of the explosive, grenade, is derived from the fruit. So the bomb in named after the fruit, NOT the fruit named after the bomb. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate#Etymology.
