Ive had a Bushman axe for several years, and its my favorite axe. Ive cut my handle down to 18", and its very handy. Wish they still made them, Id buy another.

Yes - I really like this axe for a good all rounder. It's light head makes splitting more of a challenge but other tasks are easily accomplished. It was a shame they went out of business :(

The Wetterlings Les Stroud axe is really very interesting. I will need to consider putting it on my wish list. When I pack out for a hike the two cutting tools I always take is my belt knife and my Silky Gomboy 240. After that, I choose between a large knife and an axe (Hultafors Forest Classic) depending on what I think I will be doing that day. That Toaks 750ml is a nice pot, especially with the bail. I really like how the stove nests inside it. Thanks for sharing Michael

Hi Mark - I'm looking forward to working with my new axe. Like you I carried a larger belt knife and a laplander saw but I wanted to explore more shelter building options, so I upgraded to the axe. The new TOAKS stacks much better but I'm waiting for the day the tower of titanium comes crashing over on me - lol Thanks for commenting and take care :)

Thanks for sharing. Ive been using a take down bucksaw lately but would really like to try a Silky Big Boy. Take care.

I always take both but usually go with the lighter GB sfa and bucksaw combo.

I really like the silky big boy - its a great size for general use. For extended camping trips I would love the katana boy 650. Perhaps at this years hunting camp, i'll leave the chainsaw at home!

When you have conveyance, you should use the 5 tool rule (see Dave Canturbury's video). Axe, saw, medium belt knife (4 to 7 inches), good multi tool, and an AWL or something to make holes (drill). Even when hunting I always carry a small axe, saw, belt knife & SAK with saw & awl. I think a saw in much more expedient for cutting & limbing & an axe or larger knife for splitting. There are also seasonal considerations. I carry a similar axe to the Bushman (Condor Greenland long) in the winter & early spring, but only a hatchet or even just a heavy machete in the warmer months. But ALWAYS a saw. I also got the BIGBOY recently, & I love it, but still feel the need to carry a larger bow saw on the atv for dealing with larger blow downs on the trail. Excellent video. Thanks my friend

Hi Rude Dogg - I've seen a few of Dave Canterbury's video and to be honest I'm not a fan - but I know his methods work. I prefer Mors Kochanski as a bushcraft expert if I'm honest. I'm glad you like the Silky Bigboy - I've found it excellent for cutting wood in the Boreal forest environment where I live. I've started leaving my chainsaw at home during some of my UTV rides and have cleared some sizeable obstacles with it. I checked out your channel and subscribed - looking forward to watching a few videos :) Best wishes Michael

Ill take an axe every day of the week. Ive been using them for thirty years and have some pretty entrenched ideas about them.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors7 жыл бұрын
I see your point but those silky saw's are much less work for cutting - but I agree an axe is a better all round tool.

There is no way in my mind that I would have to choose between a saw and an axe. In my mind, both are mandatory nowadays in Canada. Keep up your good work.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon. I try and take both but when backpacking 'll leave the axe at home to save weight :/ Tough decision I know.

Thanks for showing us your new toys! Have you had a chance to do some splitting with that axe? My gb small forest axe (which is pretty much the same as their hunter axe except for the poll) was a big disappointment in that area. I found the wedge too narrow for effective splitting and it would just bite in and be stuck. This one looks like it has a wider wedge. I'm a big fan of the silky saws btw. I always carry a gomboy and I replaced my chainsaw with a katanaboy for clearing fallen trees blocking the forestry roads. It takes less room, there's no stinky gas or messy oil and it starts every time. At nearly $300 canadian though, it was a pricey bit of kit. I like the look of the big boy. It might serve me well as a happy medium between the two. May I ask where you got yours and approx what you paid.

Looks like wetterlings has been completely folded into gransfors according to their Web page released mar 10 '17. Not wanting to miss my chance, I pulled the pin and ordered a bushman axe yesterday. I don't know if gb will continue to produce this axe under their name but they've already discontinued several wetterlings models. I suspect they may keep this model cause it's one of the better selling wetterlings axes and is quite different from any in the gb line up. Either way I'd rather have a wetterlings stamp on mine. I guess I'm gonna have to put the small first axe up for sale.

Yes - I was sad to see that happen and very unexpected - ahhh well one for small traditional manufacturer gone to the wall :( I think you will like the Bushman axe. It is unusual and surprisingly good at tasks where you choke up on the head. Best wishes Michael

I like the work out!, but the axe looks a good life saver in a tight spot rather than a saw. good video thanks.

Very true - the axe is a multi-tool but the saw is more specialized and better at one job. Perhaps I'll carry both :0

Like the saw, curious what was wrong with the Honda?
@TheEmporiumOutdoors8 жыл бұрын
Ya me too - I think on the back of the truck the wind chill must have brought the temp down to below -35c (rough calc) and there may have been some moisture in the fuel line. I checked the spark and it turned over well even at the lower temperature - just no fuel. When I got it home later that day - it started after a few cough's. Could be I have some summer fuel left in the tank also.
@rob200cm8 жыл бұрын
I would say those 2 tools complement each other perfectly. In addition to a small agile sharp knife or a good multitool, you have a really good combo for absolutely MOST situations. ...not too heavy, very versatile. If you wanna go light weight or minimalist it is within my experience to simply skip the axe for a relatively big strong knife, specially if you choose to keep the saw, which is quite light anyways...
@TheEmporiumOutdoors8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob200cm thats good advice! I agree a large knife can be very useful and can fulfil some of the tasks of a smaller axe :) Great comment!

like the saw. is it durable construction?
@TheEmporiumOutdoors8 жыл бұрын
Yes - its a pretty substantial blade for a "pull blade" type - but the good thing is you can replace the blades if they get damaged or get blunt. I'll do another video comparing it to the laplander soon.

Sah Heah M8, Cheers, Yeah, when I take my Silky Bigboy 2000, I usually will bring along my Hultafits Btooks 17" Agdor Hatchet, although I also have the G. B. Small Fotest Axe and the Council 24" Woodcraft Pack Axe. But my 17" Agdor is more compact with a 1 3/4 LBS. head, it's just right for what I do in the Bush, when I go with my larger axes, I also like my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw. A good 5"-6" Camp Knife and the Basic Trio is born for almost anything I need in the Bush, I believe in good quality tool's, Yeah, I use to be a 3Knife carry type of guy, now a nice Trio is what I like. Infact on our weekend trip, I brought my modified Rodent 6 that was thinned down and I had the top guard taken off at the Busse Combat Custom Shop where I ordered the knife from their Sister Company Swamp Rat. I also brought my EZ KUT Folding Saw because of the way the teeth are arranged it's a real fast cutting folding daw, similar in size to my 10" Corona Folding Saw, I also got s extra blade and a Scabbard fir it so I. can carry it in the open position when I'm setting up camp for a overnighter if I had to, and my more compact H. B. 17" Agdor Hatchet that I can also carry it in my Axe Holster I bought of a guy on KZbin, just search Axe Holster. OH, I also added my Mora 510 along as my neck knife that I carry on a ball chain, it's lite and pretty easy to carry it that way. With this Trio, I can go with my Haversack or one of my Backpacks. Ofcouce my Multi Tool and other add-on's depending on the trip, but my Leatherman Charge TTi is one of my Fav's and comes a lot with me, but I also like my vintage Gerber's because of the Awl, but if I go with my Charge TTi, then I bring my S. A. K. Farmer. I think a person shouldn't put the saw or axe against eachother, but bring both because they do compliment eachother. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

I'm inclined to agree for performance and weight - the axe has the saw beat on durability though. Each has their place and I carry both in winter and sacrifice other things to save weight. Thanks for commenting Thomas!

Hi Buck - Thanks for the comment! I haven't done much splitting with it and I tend to split as little as possible to be honest. I'm a big fan of the feed the log in method - less work :) I will be doing more with the axe on youtube for sure and I'll make sure I show some splitting. I bought the Silky from Amazon.ca (www.amazon.ca/Silky-Saws-356-36-Folding-Landscaping/dp/B0014CA3JQ) $78 CAD. I'd love the Katanaboy 650 but as you say - they are expensive - but then I could leave my chainsaw @ home.
