I first heard the music for the Royal Fireworks when I was 8 back in the 60’s, and it was a revelation to a young man who had grown up with the Beetles etc, I could not believe what I was hearing, and started a lifetime love affair with Baroque music, and especially George Frideric Handel. I still have the record to this day.

"A Grand Overture of Warlike Instruments" as Handel's masterpiece was presented at the time. After all the King had specifically said..."no fiddles." On that first performance he used 24 oboes, 12 bassoons, 9 horns, 9 trumpets and 3 drums. He added the strings later for the next performance of the work at his charity concert for the Foundling Hospital on May 27th, 1749. Reference: "Handel in London, the Making of a Genius" by Jane Glover, MBE.

What an all-encompassing soul-stirring, goose-bump inducing feast for the ears! I listen to this at least once a week, best enjoyed with eyes closed, at loudest volume, reclining in my car with the windows rolled up. Every musical section played alone would fall short, but in convergent succession, trading off the spotlight, the crisp trills of the trumpets, steady notes of the horns, the smooth fluidity of the strings, the tinkly harpsichord, steady undernotes of the tenor and bass cellos, peppy joining of the woodwinds, commanding entrance of the drums, all swelling to a great emotion-filled crescendo that doesn't get much better than at 13:06 ("La Rejouissance"). The music has life of its own. Another ethereal experience brought to you, courtesy of western civilization and the genius of George Frederic Handel. There is little more you could hear that rivals the majesty of this piece. Bravo, brava, bravissimo!! I

@@billymeyer99I’m not sure if they have holes or not. It seems like they might have at least one under the right thumb, but I don’t know enough about horns. Anyway, the trumpets have holes, they are definitely modern instruments. But I agree with you: it sounds great!
@TheMovieCreator10 ай бұрын
@@gangflow9139 A lot of the horns and trumpets available at Händels time were indeed made with holes for adjusting intonation a little bit. This is to make some of the pitches in the "Natural" harmonic series more in tune with the common diatonic scale. In short, using the holes right will make previously unusable "harsh" overtones sound passable enough to be used. Still not enough for actually changing the tones in the horn, so free chromatic play is completely off the table - hence the need for multiple tuning-loops!
@kevwang071210 ай бұрын
@@TheMovieCreator True, but these did not serve the same function as the vent holes used in modern-day baroque trumpets (as opposed to natural trumpets that have no vent holes at all). Modern day vent holes are bored at specific places on the tube where nodes in the standing wave form, when the finger is released, nodes will not be able to form at those locations, which means that certain harmonics are unable to be played, thus making playing easier while also changing the nature of the harmonic series that can be played.

Especially considering the difference between modern brass and period brass is huge. The strings here are Baroque, but I have the advantage of having a mother that was an orchestra 2nd violinist. I can see these are baroque stings instantly, but only due to the fact that my mother has played one. I still live in the 120+ year old brick mansion she bought partially for chamber music. Therefore it’s easy for me to spot baroque instruments of all types. She once has a small groups of people here that has baroque violins, viola, cello, and even a horn. They played Bach, Bach and more Bach.

I've been a union horn player for almost 50 years, played with many celebrities, major symphonies, etc. I've never seen horns held upright that like that. Must be really hard to learn (the angle of the mouthpiece is critical) and it sure produces that 'barking hound' sound of the old horns. You can't tell from the video how great that sounds in a good room. The lady horn player likely has a nickel of silver allergy and is using a plastic rim on her mouthpiece (that black ring). It's not likely they had those in the early 1800's..but who cares. They sound great!
