Yes brother you can take a drop year for JEE. I myself a JEE dropper. Make sure to join any coaching (online or offline (offline is preferable)).

But cbse student should not worry too much about, Now a days industry looks skills,so even if you have got below expected colleges, still you have chance to prove industry ready students. You are talking about colleges in TN and the central institutions like IIT & NIT. But you are completely missing out on great colleges in other states. For example, RVCE Bangalore - it is Karnataka's top ranked engineering college (excluding central institutions). It has excellent placements. The good part is that 30% of the seats are filled through ComedK exam, which is conducted at all India level for 30% seats in all Karnataka colleges. There are similar such opportunities in other states as well. You need to include these opportunities when guiding TN students. Unfortunately, this information is too late for 2024 students as ComedK and other similar exams are already over for this year.
