@VeritabIlIti Жыл бұрын
See, the thing about that is that the other mechanics never supplant the core loop. The irony is that MINTROCKET, the Korean studio that made this game, is currently owned by Nexon. That is the Japanese corporation that also owns MapleStory and proudly claims to have introduced microtransactions to the western market. Yahtzee's Picture of Dorian Gray comparison is more accurate than he realized...
@catkaboodle Жыл бұрын
But before anyone thinks MINTROCKET is a bunch of corporate stooges, this is the design philosophy on their website: "There are hundreds of things to consider when creating a game. However, the single most important thing is the fun. We boldy put aside the old conventions once considered the standards of success, and decided to stick tenaciously to focusing on the 'fun' of a game. We believe the answer lies within the heart of gamers who just enjoy games." So if they have the opportunity to pull resources from a corporation willing to indulge devs that want to make an actual game instead of a soulless gacha machine, then I say go for it. This situation doesn't happen very often (but hopefully it will become more common in the future).

Not sure if folks realize this, but Dave the Diver is actually a sneaky AAA game masquerading as an indie. It was made by a developer with 7,000 employees and a billion dollars of yearly revenue. It’s an excellent game regardless, but it’s worth keeping in mind when we defend it as an indie.
@Pineappolis7 ай бұрын
It's a very good point - and easy to miss because the publisher does work with a smorgasbord of genuine small indie teams _and_ a tonne of subsidiaries of itself, often with names that don't make the connection clear. Ultimately, though, it was priced like an indie game and, while I've not played it, certainly doesn't sound from anything I've heard to have been meddled into homogeneity by the publisher (it sounds _way_ too insane for that). It looks like a duck and quacks duck so, while it's not a duck, it's kind of close enough. I guess the one serious issue its masquerading could have created is drawing in most of the already-limited attention indie games get and causing a few genuine gems that needed to be successful to keep their creators in game design at all to flop but... erm... hopefully not?

I thought that this would be important information to share, given the somewhat fish-related nature of this video. 35% of all ocean microplastics come from clothing/textiles, mostly polyester, but also acrylic and nylon as well. This is largely due to clothes made of these materials being washed, which causes these clothes to quickly erode, with the microplastic fibers entering the water system, and eventually, the sea, where they often end up consumed by fish. These microplastics can in turn end up inside us when we eat these fish. Ocean Hero is a great search engine that we can use to help clean up larger plastics before they disintegrate into microplastics.

Dark and Darker's original was slated to be the first Mint Rocket (Nexon established subsidiary for new fresh indie-like ideas), but alas that happened. I'm glad we got to get Dave next though.

Every flight to Japan I’ve taken this year I’ve played Dave the Diver for each 10hr flight and and I was never bored. The ONLY complaint I have is how many different things there is to do. As soon as I got the phone in game and saw all those apps I was like “ah I wonder how this will be” After like 30hr I was like “there’s MORE???” It’s a game with so much passion with EVERY aspect they put into it that can feel exhausting but I’m still playing. So I can’t tag on it too much. Every time I enhance a meal I still watch the whole animation cuz it’s so Fcking funny/so much effort

Hey Yahtzee, Coelacanth alliterates with seals. (Sealacanth) welcome to the "we read a lot More than we talk and believe our language has rules but then there's words like Coelacanth that do as they please" club.

It’s an amazing game, a real gem, and my wife is playing it for the second time after playing Zelda

Dave himself is very cute. I like him. We need more fat video game protagonists

4:14 Who else wants to play as Yahtzee dodging all the free samples in the perfume department of a big store?
@TheElsarild Жыл бұрын
Yep. Picked this up at the start of summer holidays, knowing full well I'd have a lot of time at home, but sporadically. I finished it, I enjoyed it, but the closer I got to the end the less I enjoyed all the additions to the game play. This review hits on every single note I felt while playing the game.

This sounds like it might be my kind of indie game, but then I loved VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. (Yes, that is a real game, and yes, the title is spelled like that.)

He's not out to save the world, he's not out to rescue the princess, he just wants to help run a sushi shop with his friends. Also small sidenote, it's not actually an indie game its a AA(AAA?) publisher masquerading as an indie company via a subsidiary. Still a great game though, had a lot of fun.

Of all the things to take inspiration from, who would have thought indie games would be inspired by Yahtzee's original review of Duke Nukem Forever.

Would love Yahtzee to give his take on Homebody. It's not perfect, at times not even good, but other times, soul crushing and genuinely unsettling.

Nobody going to comment on the fact the main characters feel like they should be the villains? Like to me that's all I got.

Amazing video.Since Yahtzee is on management games spree, it would seem suitable for him to play punch club 2: fast forward. Pixel art indie game of managing a boxer's career., by the creators of graveyard keeper. Many references to the 80's and many movies and general culture.

Funny you make that perfume department analogy Yahtzee, because Spongebob SquarePants made a similar joke in its heyday before the first movie😆

I suspect this will be on the top 5 this year. Not in the best spot, but seems to be doing better than a lot of stuff this year. Something about Dave's vibe makes me think he's the good-guy version of Dr Robotnik/Eggman.
@Darkaos_5 Жыл бұрын
They certainly have a similar body type and hobby of messing with wild life, though Eggman is more for harassing mammals while Dave goes for tormenting tunas.

I want a game that's a cross between this and Dredge - fish up weird mutant cthulhu-fish and serve eldritch dishes to my Cultist clientele. The better your dishes, the more powerful the Cult becomes, and the more powerful Lovecraftian elder god they are able to summon. Stronger gods corrupt more of the ocean, which gives you more areas to explore and weirder fish to catch. Repeat until you end the world.

I think the Potion games were people with nostalgia for the Atelier series. Lot of indie trends tend to be based on nostalgia for cult classic Japanese games.

I just wish there wasn't so many button presses required to do ONE thing. Just shooting the harpoon requires 3 button presses- could've been shortened to just 2 (aim with the stick THEN fire) 4 if you count the QTE prompt to catch bigger fish. I'm old, and controllers aren't built like they used to. Yes, I made a workaround for the QTE in steam layouts, but it really shouldn't have come to that.

Totally fine with bigger companies making quality Indie style games loaded with content for cheap prices. Leans closer to "AA" quality.
