In essence, the game is a metaphor for what the current generation of gaming has become. It's all flashy graphics, and grinding, but without any inherent direction or aim. Perhaps the developers were trying to capture the whole feel of what conventional explorers went through when discovering new land; simply going there and proving it existed was enough, it didn't matter what you saw, provided you actually saw it, but modern gaming isn't that insightful - we've been conditioned to seek a tangible goal, rather than just smell the flowers. I suppose the developers listened to that whole notion where gamers were tired of being reminded of a goal within their sandbox games and wanted to aim for immersion and true freedom of roaming, but then forgot to put in some boundaries or structure to the sandbox, not realising that a sandbox without a box is just sand, and to put it like Anakin Skywalker, it's rough, coarse and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

@@lonotalonota5779 No Man's Sky offers enough carrots on enough sticks to puddle around in it's open world. To an extension, it can be compared now more to Minecraft with it's terraforming and building yet limited unlike minecraft with the building. For me I spent 90hrs on the game until I reached the point of "yup I'm did everything I wanted to do" and enjoyed those 90hrs. Personally what could help the game in the long run is something more challenging. Perhaps dungeons in planets similar to the abandoned freighters in space. Or adding a reason to explore the planets. As is it's a fun indie game you should get for 30 dollars or less.

Yeah, but hype has nothing to do with the game's quality. Hype ruined Fable 2 for me, but I can at least appreciate that a lot of work went into it, and it doesn't shock me that plenty of people like it, while I cling to my nostalgic non-hype of fable 1 and claim it's the best one. NMS is just boring. Hype or not, and I'm glad that's what he focuses on. It's a fundamentally shitty game.

Jaime Stark Thanks for the assumption about someone you've never met. I've been playing MMOs in particular since Everquest (aka, the era of COMPLICATED MMOs, they've gotten much simpler nowadays) and normal RPGs since the very first Final Fantasy on the NES (back when RPGs actually had challenge, instead of the "could beat it while asleep because the bad guys attack by dying in my general direction" ones these days). If it's a big MMO... and often also smaller ones... I've probably played it. Except EVE, I hate that one. JRPGs I dont play as much these days; they're too easy to hold my attention when I could just play the older ones. Besides, what you say there changes... a whole lot of nothing. MMO *and* JRPG gameplay usually boils down to: 1. stomp enemies, 2. get items WOO LOOT, 3. next dungeon/area/thing. A bit repetetive, wouldnt you say? You go punch enemies (usually via a very uninteresting combat system) to get new stuff so that you can go through the next area and punch enemies to get better stuff and.... yeah. Sound familiar? Also, NMS actually does have a narrative (which actually starts to suggest that there's a goal OTHER than the center of the galaxy, if you read far enough into it, not that most people bothered to). But there's a difference: It doesnt wave it at you via cutscenes like a JRPG. You have to look for and READ it instead of it just handing it to you. Mind-boggling concept, yeah? Having to EXPLORE to learn stuff in an EXPLORATION game? Yeah. Mind-boggling how the narrative might go down that road. Mind-boggling indeed. **facepalm** I seriously hate this gaming generation. So much.

How to improve NMS : - Add base management and settlement construction (similar to Fallout 4's thing) - Add a variety of gun upgrade. (i wish my multitool could also be a sniper?) - Add in-game factions based on the 3(4?) main alien race - Which in terms leads to faction wars - AND conquering planets/systems - Add multiplayer (works really well with faction stuff) - Polish some mechanics (ie : the life support system is boring as hell, but also make plutonium more scarse, rare my ass) - Add actual fights agaisnt alien races - Add more complexity to space combat (being able to instantly recharge your ship shield is hand holding x100) - A better HUD/UI that isn't ctrl+c from Destiny (seriously though) - Add an actual ending to the game... - Let us crash our ship (yup, i want to do that) - And honestly, they might as well have given us 1Millions planets, but with the aforementioned features, i would have been happy - 3/10, too much space IGN

+falconbox even if you cancel your preorder the company still makes money off of interests for as long as that money is in the bank. They've already got the money to produce these games, so we should stop rewarding them before they release them. you don't pay Toyota $3,500 immediately after they announce their newest vehicle coming out a year later; you buy it after they release it. Now, crowdfunded games is another thing. they don't have the money to produce them and they are asking for an investment.

The thing about No Man's Sky is that it's basically the building blocks of an amazing game, without the actual game. The ultimate goal of getting to the center of the universe does provide a lot more structure than sand-boxes usually have; you fly from system to system, having to touch down on planets for fuel or to repair your ship, which is a cool premise that feels right out of a Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica kind of show. The problem is, with those sci-fi TV shows about intrepid explorers needing to touch down for some essential part to continue their journey, that essential part leads to actual adventures; maybe it's owned by some alien civilization that needs you to solve their problems before they'll give it up, or it's hidden in the lair of some horrible space monster. In No Man's Sky, the essential items you need to travel are about 5 steps away from wherever you land. Actually exploring planets is completely optional, but if you select that option, what does it get you? Not much, really. All this is to say that No Man's Sky *could* be a much more fun game with just a little added content. Being able to build things on planets (especially something that would let you actually return to any world you particularly liked) would help. So would a feature that would let you actually *take* creatures and plants from planets, maybe to display in your own space terrarium that other players could visit. Unlike Yahtzee, I totally *am* down for experiencing the raw mystery of the cosmos, but discovery for discovery's sake feels hollow when there's no one to share it with. It seems like the only point is to be like an old European explorer, going into new lands and getting to name everything after himself, but the appeal of being Magellan is that people actually sail Magellan's strait. No one will ever even find Planet Michael because of the sheer size of the universe, but even if they did, they wouldn't care, because there's nothing significantly unique about it when there's trillions of other planets in the game.

Yeah, imagine if you could capture animals, or gather resources to build complex bases. When you returned it could pretty much be like your some kind of space emperor, ruling over your awesome castle. Also it might be best if animals had more behavior modes then, run away, ignore, or attack. At least give each individual its own abilities. Some spit poison, some can't be touched, other are super fast, some turn invisible, some fly away, some burrow underground , some get a running charge, and some just steal from you. I like flavor text as much as the next guy, but you have to have an actual meal in there. It's like ketchup without the fries.

I found that you can learn the local languages on each planet and solar system. You can learn the history of the people's and the relations between them all. I found it very interesting however it definitely took a lot of walking around each planet. I mean at one point I was 8 real time hours of walking away from my ship. I did end up finding ways to make my ship spawn near me which made it easier but a few times I found ships that we're better than the starter ship or my current ship and I'd just repair and take them. But I found the exploring to be fun even if it was monotonous at times. But I can definitely see why many didn't like the game due to the lack of a defined goal.

All the people in the comments are saying "Its good now! They fixed it!" but like, no, they didn't. Adding feature bloat to a game who's main issue was its shallowness does not fix it. The issue with the game at launch was that it was aimless, while being wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle, and its still is. All they did was make the ocean wider. The game has a million features now like vehicles, and mechs and settlements and basebuilding, but all of these features are absolute barebones at best and don't have any meaningful depth or reason for existing. All the planets are still identical, there's no reason to explore, no meaningful rewards for exploring, there's no reason to build a base other than for the sake of it and progression still consists of "Grab resources to charge your mining tool to grab more resources to upgrade your mining tool, to grab more resources to charge your mining tool to grab more resources to upgrade your mining tool to grab more resources to charge your mining tool." Its a grindy repetitive snorefest with 0 real depth and honestly I want him to re-review it just so he can point out that its still a bad game.

Imagine a game where instead of 18 QUINTILIAN planets, They scaled it down just a bit and instead had around 6. But each planet was as lively as a map from skyrim! And don't tell me it can't be done cause You can just use the content from the other 17 Quintilian planets and use it to make these 6 better planets instead

pkpandabear Yeah, it's also hard in that cruel but fair way that is characteristic of the attitude the laws of nature have toward the works of man. It's a sandbox game and in sandbox mode, it doesn't really give you a goal but unlike a lot of other sandbox games, it actually has that structure and progression of goals that yahtzee would probably enjoy. Build a rocket. Get into the air. Get your rocket to stop crashing. Get your rocket into orbit. Get to the mun. Get the guy you inevitably stranded there back down again. so on and so forth.

Reminds me of Project Zomboid. It's been in alpha for years and the steam workshop has content that the devs promised to release years ago, like survivors and vehicles. Can you find them in game? no. But you can in the workshop. And they work perfectly well. (I guess it gets updated very often tho) The thing with Project Zomboid is that it's a brilliant base. A zombie RPG relying on a craft system, with you having to watch out for things like weight load (your character will get a bad back), disinfecting and changing bandages regularly, dressing warm, not eating raw food, staving off boredom... Like, it goes into small details like having a tissue on you if you have a cold, because sneezing attracts zombies. After a while the electricity and water cut off, food goes off an so on. The characters have traits, too, on a point system. They can be short-sighted, hard-of hearing, deaf, obese, athletic, etc etc. The game has not a lot of it, but there are lots of useless little items you'll sometimes find on zombies or in homes, like jewels or toys. The problem? ITS S O B O R I N G. Your aim is to survive. That's it. Sure it's not easy, especially with the system making it so there are more and more zombies as time goes on, but once you have your shelter and farm etc, there's nothing left.

I mean, not everyone has to enjoy the game, but you've gotta admit there's an incredibly amount of work put into it. And clearly some voodoo magic involved to make a universe that big. Personally I never really cared about the game until I picked it up on sale last week, and I think it's pretty incredible tbh, even if it's still a bit unpolished.

Well, as I said, I only just bought it, so the game's history doesn't really matter much to me except as an interesting historical footnote. I do think it's a little unfair to group an indie studio with the practices of Bethesda, Activision/Blizzard, and other AAA studios. They've made plenty of games, they know what their schedules are going to look like, they have plenty of money to do it properly, and they know they've got lots of fans who will buy it no matter what who they're exploiting. For an indie game studio, personally I'm more willing to assume it was incompetence or budget shortfalls rather than a deliberate strategy.

It has Muiltiplayer and you can Build on planets moons/planets/Asteroids or just live in your Capital Vessel. Build Hovercrafts or Small Spacecrafts. The game supplies designs that are completely customizable or you can build and design your own to look like your favorite Starwars or Star Trek Ship. Warp to different planets in the Solar system.

Oh, and Starbound supports Steam Workshop, and greatly supports modders, so even more content there.

I followed the hype from beginning to end, yes they fucking lied about SO many features. Not least of which was fucking multiplayer, which was a feature advertised on national TV. If it was just a 'bandwagon' thing people wouldnt be refunding it in the 10s of thousands. They'd be playing it, like any good game. The game even advertised trading in the week before the launch, the game doesn't have an OUNCE of trade simulation, it's the shallowest 'trading' ive ever seen in game claiming to have it. But someone already did the work of narrowing down just how much bullshit they fed us : www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/4y1h9i/wheres_the_no_mans_sky_we_were_sold_on_a_big_list/

It's actually good now. It still has some of the problems you mention here, but I think re-visiting wouldn't hurt. You can build things now. There's clouds. Not AS MUCH pops in now (still does here and there but thank fuck I don't want my 1070 to die now that every card costs millions). You can create your own space fleet with captains and expeditions. Tons of random events while flying but you can also take the piss break. It was massively overpromised for the time, but give it a try when it's on sale. It's not the best game ever but the developers didn't just dump thing on the market and left with the grub, they actually fucking went back and polished thing for once and I love supporting that.

You could travel to the centre of the galaxy, which took hours and hours of hyperspace jumps - and your reward for finally getting there was to get sent to _another_ galaxy where you got to do it all over again. Have they lowered the price yet? Needs to be $5-10 instead of $60. They should do that then when they finally get some real content charge $10 for the DLC. It'd be a better strategy. In 6 months no one will be playing it and it will be infamous as a flash in the pan that tanked big time.

I know that this game has been rebuilt from basically the ground up, and the game is pretty good now. I do appreciate all the work that Hello Games has done to make the game fun, and the time they've spent fulfilling the promises they made. However, I feel that I have to say that there's a very hard limit on its enjoyment. By this, I mean that at a certain point the game loses almost all of its enjoyment. I know this because I've 'completed' the game a handful of times, and I physically cannot bring myself to play any more of it. Doesn't matter what they add, it's just not fun after a certain point
