What's weird is that on the 1st mission of Deus Ex if you look out to the background (being new york city) You'll see everything except the Twin Towers. They were left out of the game because the developers forget them. However when questioned about this Ion Storm said the towers weren't there because of a terrorist attack. That's right. Deus Ex predicted 9/11 a year before it happened.

What I liked about Deus Ex was that the characters in the game gave me some pretty solid arguments, as to why I should help them. My favorite part has to be speaking with Morpheus as he gives a pretty good overview of the history of human society, what ESPECIALLY fucks my mind is how he says "We will soon have our god, and we will create it with our own hands". Think about google! Where do you immediately seek answers when you need them? We pull out our glorious smartphones and start googling, we seek and store knowledge of ourselves on the internet, and Google is a gateway, the internet is everywhere, and soon we will be able to store our consciousness in an external nonphysical computer database which we already today know as "clouds". We are literally creating god and heaven with our own hands. Soon the machines will be controlling our government, set with the main goals to preserve intelligent life and gather knowledge.. Unless we nuke ourselves before that...

That's cute and all, but you cannot store your consciousness onto a computer. Why? Because that's not how it works, the brain is an organ, that's like saying you can download your liver into your computer. And are you seriously comparing Google to a God? It is a collection of as much knowledge in the world (if it's actually uploaded to the internet that is) as any human knows, Google, and any other search engine isn't a God that can actually be able to create the Universe and every single piece of matter in it. And why the fuck would anyone let a machine decide how we humans are governed? We barely trust other humans with the job. This comment is naive beyond comprehension.
@Otakumanu
@Otakumanu 8 жыл бұрын
And I find your comment cynical beyond comprehension. Technological fallacies aside, I truly believe there will be a point where we can fully integrate our consciousness into machines. The OPs google comparison was just meant to point out we managed to achieve the idea of a global knowledge databse, which would be the first step towards creating a man-made god, not that we are that close to completion.

I FIRST played Deus Ex 1 two years ago and I absolutely loved it. I ignored the obviously dated graphics (I don't have a problem with that) since I knew it was a 2000 game and I dived into this gem. What I most loved was the story and the numerous ways to complete it (There are a TON of posibilities). Oh, and the soundtrack, it's really great and it helps a lot to create atmosphere.
@MrShawno1231

AlbertoBC7 I don't think you can define a game that has you waiting for the target reticle to zoom in whilst the enemy 75% of the time deliberately misses every shot when you're practically standing right in front of them a gem... If anything that is completely ludicrous game design. I'd take System Shock 2 any day over Deus Ex, cause at least I can be sure that the enemies won't dance around like fools and would actually present me a challenge that isn't down to artificial difficulty due to the mechanics being mediocre and inconsistent! Half of the stuff, such as Pepper sprays, Gas grenades, Tranquilizer darts, stealth pistol (Practically one of the worst weapons in the game), normal pistol works fine from a distance even with the enemies being in the same room as you they're almost completely deaf and don't pay attention to what is going on above or below them... Robots are easy to kill as well, you can even get behind them when they're scanning the area or take them out with a rocket. In terms of choice however, if you choose to try and collect every item just be sure to choose the GEP gun (Yeah it takes up a lot of inventory space, however it allows you to virtually blow away turrets you can't find a password for to shut.) Hacking is nice, but who was the genius that made the dumb decision to have it timed when reading the emails? (Hey, here's some important information concerning the games plot, are you a fast reader cause if not then fuck you!) Now I can understand it being timed for the terminals, but emails that vary in size? Another part that shows the mechanics flaws is where you can save JC Denton's brother, Paul. (Yeah, again it is cool that you can set L.A.M's on the wall near to the door to take out the ambush getting ready to kill Paul.) However, this moment also completely falls on its face as the very moment Paul walks out of the door of his hotel room, he turns into The Terminator, completely impervious to damage, and whilst you sit around and wallow waiting for your aiming system to kick in he takes out most of the guards by moving around constantly, almost with perfect accuracy!? (It's almost as if the game wants to mock by saying: "Ha Ha, you can only stand in front of fire to get a perfect shot, you see even though PD is supposedly INJURED on behalf of the game narrative, he's still more competent at killing than you are...) It is like the developers are saying: "You've got all these lovely choices, however these monkey tuned mechanics are staying with you..."
@MrShawno1231
@MrShawno1231 9 жыл бұрын
AlbertoBC7 Now that's a thing I can agree on, its sound-track is great, however in terms of atmosphere I'd say the music has more personality than the atmosphere of the game. (Some of the back story is good, but you don't have many civilians referencing any of it... Nor is any of the news-papers actually dated and therefore makes it harder to work out the events of what happened before Bob Page took over.) Though the game recognises your accomplishments and deeds per-se, all it does is reference them once and they're never brought up again? (Take, for example the first Unatco guard you can kill after subduing the TERRORIST, yes Manderley say's: "it is impending investigation" and yet he doesn't go along with it?) Another, part like this occurs a bit later in the game when you finish the airfield mission in NYC. ("You can kill all the guards there except for Gunther before leaving to return to Unatco.) Yet, this time Manderley says nothing to the fact that you basically just took out 12 of his men... O.K, the game recognises you for killing AN, but again it is a reference, Alex mentions it once and Gunther mentions the same line twice... The problem with Deus Ex's narrative, is that it imposes on your choices! (It is point-less, wasting the soldiers after rescuing Paul at the Hotel as the moment you die you get taken to the MJ12 section of Unatco.) At moments, despite the game allowing you to PLAY HOW YOU WANT, they're plenty of times like this that are completely on rails.

Invisible War had one major drawback: One type of ammo for all ranged weapons. This means when you used up ammo for one type of weapon you could only use melee weapons. Which was quite frustrating at later levels when you encountered many heavily armed enemies that either exploded after dying or had almost no ammo upon dying. The nanosword was also nowhere near as strong as in Deus Ex 1. Not a whole lot of biomods to choose from, but some were pretty interesting, especially the black market ones. If you had electrostatic discharge for example, you could disable sensors and even bots with your sword without draining your bioenergy. So imo, not entirely a bad game.

Paul Staker Yeah, the only modern game that came close to that level of complexity was Steel Battalion. That required a specialized controller that you had to sit into like a cockpit. Great for the immersion, bad for the wallet, and it would have been great had the game not been shit. Give it a few years and the Oculus Rift can bring back the glory days of flight sims and MechWarrior-esque games. I wanna use it and play the old Wing Commander games. More than that, I want Wing Commander to get a reboot. Weird how relevant its themes became in the last 10-12 years.

Other characters would use the name you put in in emails and messages to you in game. I didn't realize this during my first few playthroughs though. I always facetiously made my name HEY ZEUS since the character's codename was J.C. Almost all of the messages people send to you start with "Hey, (first name of name you entered)." Always upgrade Swimming at least 1-2 times in any given playthrough. Any level with water in it has secrets and shortcuts worth diving for. Especially Hong Kong. Not a first-priority skill, but a good dump stat. Environmental Resistance, on the other hand, is completely useless. Every level that throws a radioactive or poisonous room at you always gives you a hazmat suit and some health a room or two beforehand.

I get that its a joke but most antidepressants do carry a risk of suicidal ideation though.
@Veladus
@Veladus 9 жыл бұрын
I still think that's bullshit. Drugs don't put specific thoughts into your head, and even if they did then an entire class of them giving people the specific thought is still silly. What's really happening is that while any depression patient has a very good chance of able to be cured with drugs, any given antidepressant only has at best a 50-50 chance of working for any given patient's specific chemistry. It's hit and miss, you just have to find the one (or combination of ones) that work for you. And many people that seek help do so because they're at the end of their rope and they can't take it anymore. It's help or suicide. So they just tried the help and it didn't help. Guess what happens next. No, it's not the drug doing it, it's the drug not doing anything that's doing it.
@platomaker
@platomaker 9 жыл бұрын
Veladus I forgot what it was you were arguing, but I just wanted to say that drugs probably don't change what you think so much as what you feel, the premise of the drug class of antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). They brighten the mood and the patient has more energy, however these drugs contain the warning of suicidal ideation *because* although after 2-3 weeks of treatment it will brighten their mood, their thoughts might still be towards suicide and they may very well act on it now that they have the energy.
@juliettami77
@juliettami77 6 жыл бұрын
lol no, suicide ideation is a very real side-effect. Even when I was literally suicidal, I wasn't thinking about my own death so graphically or obsessively until I was on these meds. I didn't even really WANT to do it, it was just that whenever I got anxious, dark-ass thoughts would come down hard. Especially when I was falling asleep.

I heard from my parents about a co-worker of theirs that took anti-depressants. Apparently it caused some very strange and mysterious dreams. Depressed people need new goals, inspiration and hope to be revived again. I can imagine it's a hit or miss depending on the person.

Actually yes you can. Block her in the room with steel crates, and then scare one of the guards into fleeing out the locked front door. This takes a LOT of preparation, and you have to corral the guard using furniture, but it does work, and the game does take this possibility into account. Later when Hermann taunts you at the cathedral, his dialogue is different if Navarre is still alive. It's considerations like this that made the game great.

Am I the only one who thinks Deus Ex Human Revolution gave just as much freedom? I mean, there isn't THAT many ways to beat each level in Deus Ex 1. Usually you'd count 4 ones that didn't require insane luck, and thats if you count gunning (or dragon toothing) the entire building like Rambo (or a jedi) as a solution. HR usually had 3 or 4 as well. HR also had a better soundtrack and had a significantly more convincing world. It ended in a more satisfying way by giving a choice that while the original was grey neutral, it actually made the decision hard in HR while in the original robot fusion is plain the most obvious choice ever made. Finally, HR actually had a difficulty curve that wasn't "Nightmarish hard in a bullshit way until you get the dragon tooth sword and one shot your way to victory against enemies you couldn't possibly feel remorse for killing". The only advantage Deus Ex 1 has over HR is that melee was a thing, and your character at least starts useless like an RPG should.
@Zelousmarineinspace
@Zelousmarineinspace 10 жыл бұрын
Are you taking the *PISS*??!! Human revolution COMES NOWHERE *NEAR* the depth as the original. You shouldn't rely on luck, because I've beat the game using only the crossbow ON MY FIRST PLAYTHROUGH. HR has a better soundtrack?? Ok now you're just trolling. While it is good, there is NO WAY it can match to the original Deus Ex. Better ending. Of course, choosing an ending which says push one of 3 buttons to decide whoch diologe should speek over the SAME backdrop. While Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a great Deus Ex game, it could *NEVER* hope to match the complexity of Deus Ex.
@fearedjames
@fearedjames 10 жыл бұрын
Zelousmarineinspace Firstly, the backdrop did change. Secondly, Deus Ex 1 has about 1 good track, and the rest are awful. It isn't even a good soundtrack. Human Revolution has a god damn fantastic soundtrack, but it wouldn't even need to be that good to be better then Deus Ex 1.

I got this game in a bundle with Human Revolution (though suspiciously not invisible war or any of the other spin-offs). I found it hilarious that i could run HR at triple digit framerates but couldn't get anything over 23FPS for the original, with colossal frame dips every time i had to look at a water texture. There's poor optimization and then there's optimization so cocking bad that you'd get similar performance on a brick with a bit of glass taped to it.

what i loved about Deus Ex was the way it wasn't so much 'open' but 'available', in that, chasing down this or that person lead you, in a linear fashion, to Paris, Hong Kong, etc etc. you travelled the world's great cities in this pre-Orwellian future and, thru info fed you at just the right moment, would change your target of choice as you begin to realise your little man in the game, this little nobody agent, is in fact being used as a tool to complete something you certainly only have a small percentage of the relevant facts and are only still alive because the technology within you is the only thing keeping you alive. it kinda reminded me of the 1960s espionage movies with the central character named Palmer, played by Michael Caine, a nobody as agents go & a criminal past, wit no influence or friends in high places but is known by at least one Chief of Intelligence as a dog that won't let go once he's got his teeth into something. except in Deus Ex it's cyberpunk, a genre i am a big fan of. but, as far as grfx and combat systems go, it wasn't in the same class as HL, and, from the beginning i noticed just how bad the grfx were BUT, the story had so much depth and intrigue that it was like a book you just couldn't put down and the quality of the grfx just did not matter. they were certainly nowhere near as important as the wonderful story i, as a gamer, was involved with. HL was a game that slowly drew me in. from the shuttle service , and being late for your job, watching all the activity of the odd ppl and 'things' that seemed to be going on about you, but you only an observer, as the credits faded in and out, it was a real shock when BOOM! you're in a room where something has gone wrong and ppl are dying all around and strange things are happening beyond all comprehension. from being this "press this or that button, gordon, come on now!" gofor, to suddenly dodging what look like large fat bodied desert spiders [like the balloon spiders you get in Iraq etc] and trying to help scientists as they plummet to their horrible death. HL and DE are both 10/10 games that are just different genres, in game terms, anyway. you just cannot compare them. it would be like comparing Mortal Combat to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic [well, the one about Darth Vader's apprentice and the use of the Dark Side, i forget its name]. or Thief:Dark Project to Call of Duty 1.

I was trying a stealthy, no-kill run (which I usually completely fail at, but I made it through the first couple missions, so it was going way better than normal) and discovered that as far as NPC interactions are concerned, "unconscious" enemies are indistinguishable from "dead." There goes all motivation for even attempting to use the tranq dart.

I want to play a game where at any point in a boss fight you can run past the boss and Escape but any boss you did not defeat the first time you met them is going to be part of a Boss Rush at the end of the game.

I basically did that for an RPG maker game I put together. The player can skip an entire area if they want to explore it but the boss of that level ambushes in the final lair.

"Greatest PC Game of All Time"? No. LOL, no. That title belongs to Half-Life followed closely by Total Annihilation. I can understand your mistake but a mistake it is nonetheless. Please let us know when you've corrected your video. Thank you.

i like half life but it wasnt as free form as deus ex nor as open. in fact the first level of deus ex blows anything half life had to offer

pyroneutral a game doesn't need to be "free form" or "open" to be good, as evidenced on Half-life, the Greatest PC Game of All Time. Half-Life delivers its narrative with excellent pacing that never seems jilted, strange or at all convoluted, unlike every deus ex game made. The problem with deus ex, the same problem many "open" games fall prey to is that they are too reliant on being "open". Game mechanics, graphics, art, sound design, music, level design, animation, etc. all suffer because this game has to be "open". It's ridiculous and merely praising a game because it's "open" and may offer more than one style of play (deus ex claims to but seriously punishes open combat styles of play) but sucks otherwise isn't at all realistic.

You heard that phrase wrong.@1:15"Popularly considered the greatest PC game of all time." HL1 was released in 1998 and didn't have far as much complexity as Deus Ex did, though it did have great depth and was/is considered with similar reverence popularly. I even feel so. I put them in the same pedestal Nice try though

***** I see what you did there (re: "on" and "in"). Please be aware some of us are replying via cell phones which fall prey to "predictive text". I appreciate the praise ("nice try"). It's not necessary, however; being correct is its own reward. Being "open" isn't immediately analogous to being "good" or "fun" or even "unique". I'm tired of people attempting to make this connection. Some "open" games (shooters) truly use the game mechanic to bolster many design facets of the game (Fallout 3, GTA IV, GTA V, Dishonored, etc.) but unfortunately many use it as an excuse to prop up a game that has too many problems otherwise. I'm tired of poor game mechanics and design laziness being excused because "hurrrr, it's 'open'". Too many modern games fall into this trap (Far Cry 3, new Thief, new deus ex, etc.). I'm tired of bountiful excuses being made for boring, repetitive games in the sake of promoting "open". Focus on the mechanics and basics first. Then, and ONLY then, think about making the game "open".

hikeskool Since you are clearly wearing your bias on your sleeve I'm going to enjoy bursting your little bubble. Speaking as someone who played Half-Life for the first time two years ago it has aged about as well as milk. There is nothing sacred about old games, they are just old. The Beatles is not the greatest rock band ever, and Half-Life isn't the best PC game ever. Were they pioneers that revolutionized the field in their day? Yes. Can they still be enjoyable in the right mindset? Yes. Have others come along and since done the same thing but better? Yes. Nostalgia goggles are a bitch I know; I am still convinced Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is the best game ever, even though objectively I know I am wrong; but they are no excuse to be a twat.

I think the first sign that I was definitely going to like this game from square one was that it makes a Soylent Green reference.

I remember this one time in Hong Kong I got my legs broken (as you do) I crawled about the market place for approximately half an hour before I could find a health pack. eventually I found one on a boat in the canal, but if I had picked up that health pack earlier on however I would have been fucked. I had the regeneration augment but trough a series of unfortunate events (I SERIOUSLY fucked up) my bio energy was drained and I had no recharge disks (or what ever they are) SO REMEMBER KIDS, ALWAYS THINK AHEAD! (and spiders are bollocks)

And if there is one thing Rise of the Triads 2013 has shown, it's that you can update graphics and still stay faithful to the game's style and principles. Let's pray.

With the right engine mods (the DX9 unreal renderer) and the HDTP/New Vision texture packs, Deus Ex 1 can actually look pretty decent. The texture artist in particular did a damn good job, some of the computer screens e.g. in Tongs Laboratory combined with the subtle bloom, look damn good.

I concede to your point, but I was stating that America weren't the sole heroes in the War not that the Americans were useless, they were in WWI but not in WWII. another point I was making was that WWII was a combined effort. No Allies=Dead America (in Europe of course).
