Excellent video, just one pointer from a guy who works for one of the major tile setting mortar (ie thinset) manufacturers. Always put the water into your mixing bucket first, then slowly add the powder. You can add more water to adjust consistency if you need to. Most manufacturers will give you the maximum amount of water to add on the bag instructions. Same with grout or any cement based materials. They mix better.

I went thru a 4 yr apprenticeship to be a journeyman tile setter. 1970s. Back then we used string to space horizontal, eye and measuring vertical. All tile surface was adhered with pure cement, on sand, cement and lime plaster on walls and ceilings, that we floated ourselves to true up all surfaces. Used black rubber pails to mix in. All tile was soaked in square laundry tub that also doubled as a wet lube for tile saw.

No cracking, lifting, etc. I did regrout and seal everything about 4 years ago in preparation to sell. If done correctly, a tile job could last a lifetime. That house also had an original 1941 black and white tiled bathroom, that I regrouted and is in pristine shape to this day.

I remolded not only my 1st foreclosure house, but I also worked for 5 years for a remodeling company here in S. FL. Some great tips here, and it's a great video. Many DIYs don't realize you need that level piece of wood to make sure there are not obvious slanted lines and also support to the tile on walls till the thin set starts to take hold. Unless it's a new build, many showers have bowed and non-plumbed walls. You walk in a shower and eyes are always drawn to eye level and above. Rarely to a compensation cut at the bottom. Also back buttering is essential. Again, great video!

We all know the work it takes to clean off dried thinset. Good work 💪🏻🔥

I have always enjoyed doing tile and coming up with unique looks. The time is rewarding for sure for me and the home owner. Using mosaic tiles is a great way to do accent borders in many ways. I had one job I used one that had some glass 1 inch square pieces that I actually used on the by 12 tiles and I clipped the corners periodically when I did a job floor to ceiling. Then I continued the decorative mosaic border around the mirror that was recessed in the tile as well. It was a very rewarding job at the end and very well loved by the customer and friend of mine. I love using both styles of wet saws depending on the jobs. Putting the board across at the beginning and the same as your border section is always a plus. Fantastic job Josh, and wonderful choice of colors.

@@TheExcellentLaborer : Just about to start a project and the part about layout I’m finding particularly helpful. If aluminum edges were used instead of bullnose tiles, do those get installed at layout time, or slid in place while thinset is still wet? Also, how do you finish the bottom tile where it joins the shower pan? Grout or silicone caulking?
@saiyanwarrior828 Жыл бұрын
It’s best to use a half inch by half inch notched trowel on tile the size specifically because of the way it suctions the tile to the wall better. Also clean the thinset off the face of the tile and off the edges of the tile with a margin trowel in sponge as you go itll make grouting so much easier and just the entire process in general.
@ch19593 ай бұрын

@@ch1959 well you can either use a jolly strip on the edges instead of bull nose to mitigate that or you can put grout caulk on the edge of the bullnose tiles. I’ve never ever had a problem with it sticking out too far. Also i just realized I don’t think he did the water proofing.

Of all the tiling videos I've seen this is the most extensive - Thanks! I read through all the comments to get a question answered and it must be annoying for a dozen people asking the same question about 11-1/4 vs. 11-3/4! I wondered also, but was clear by just reading comments. I also have watched your videos about installing, taping and waterproofing the cement board. But my question is about where the tiles meet the ceiling and concerns about water penetration. In your taping video I didn't see what you did there. Use Fibatape in corner between wall to ceiling? Thinset on the fibatape on shower wall and sheetrock spackling on the same Fibatape on ceiling? I am not sure the best way to do this to have to let no water get behind but to still be able to finish/paint ceiling. Again, thank you for the video and in advance for this answer!

I am not a "TILE LAYER" but I've done a few jobs. I never use a leveling system I've never even laid out lines on the wall like you did. I admire your work and I've learned from it and I agree some times tile can be warped Like a 2x4 from Menards. It's a dirty job its messy but I have never had any complaints. Especially when I'm working on my own house Hmmmmmmm.

Should the ledger board have been 11 1/2 inches high? 11 1/4 tile plus 1/8 gap at floor and in-between tiles would be 11 1/2 not 12...am I missing something ? thanks
@stupidassol3 ай бұрын
The actual tile width is 11.5"

I was confused so came here to answer- BUT now I'm thinking it's bc he left room for Floor tile? Wish I knew. I'm trying to start my shower tile today!

Yea that’s why it’s a great idea to tile floor first

Thank you for some great information. I am about to redo one of my bathroom tub tiles and love that wedge system. Also I think I’ll be doing an inset niche using schluter trim around it and matching with the outside so no bull nose.
@TheExcellentLaborer2 жыл бұрын
You are welcome Rob. I do like the recessed niches. They were good but they are a lot of work. But anything worth doing will be a lot of work. Thanks a lot for watching!

I am doing mine now. Found out water was getting behind the existing tile so I have mold back there. Lots of fun going on this weekend.

Actually if you get a quality tile cutter it cuts porcelain just fine. Been doing tile for twenty years. That being said I do use a wet saw the majority of the time. Also the job looks better if you use schluter on your exposed edges. You definitely do nice work for a guy that dabbles in everything. Nothing worse than warped tile, especially 12x24 on a split running bond pattern. Those leveling systems are a game changer for sure. It takes time and plenty of experience with some patience to set without them to get a quality job. If your doing a job like this without the leveling system then use a level and rubber mallet to make sure your tiles are flat. It’s a little more tedious but perfection is the name of the game. Another nice little trick for you accent tile is set it to the kerdi band the day before and then just set it in three pieces. That way you Don’t have to worry thin set oozing through. I learned that little trick from Sal Dablasi on his KZbin channel. He’s a tile guru. Edit, I didn’t know you had a bullnose to finish edge when I mentioned the schluter.

Halfway throught he video you ask to leave a comment if you have or have not. I have not. We are paying a contractor. No idea what it all entails and after watching half this video I am confident I will never do this myself. Thank you for the great video and major appreciation to those who do this for a living!

You have great videos. I learn so much watching you building this house. I have tiled 3 showers so far and have 4th one for my daughter in about 3 weeks. The shelves idea is what I am going to use. I don’t remember the difference between red guard and aqua brand water proofing. Keep up the good work as I look forward to seeing what you have going on.

Great tutorial! I’m doing my first tile job on my shower this week. This video has really given me the confidence to tackle the job. How did you get your shower plug off? The tile is flush with the side of that hex profile at 39:06.
@TheExcellentLaborer Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I removed the plug by using needle nose pliers and grip the side. It may be difficult if the plug is in snug. You may want to remove it before installing the tile. I hope that helps!

Your vides are so clear and are explained in a way infully understand and barely have to rewind! I have a question abiut the board yiu located at 12" drom the base. With a 11-1/4" tile and a 1/8" gap to the base and a 1/8" spaxe up top, that is 11-1/2" total. Why did you make line at 12", which is 1/2" higher? Thank you!
@Srone796 ай бұрын
This had me thinking as well. In the video @ 1:27 mark you can see he measures 11 3/4 and not 11 1/4. It makes sense with 11 3/4 with the extra 1/4 added for the spacers.

Man, your precision was fantastic, loved the video and I'm definitely going to be using your method to re-model my shower. I'm going to be going for a triangle shaped shower so wish me luck.
