In my country there is also a story about a dragon. In Postojna there is a cave where a dragon was residing. And the people where scared of him so thy offered him tribute (like the saint George story and the Polish one) but one day a farmer decided he had enough so he took one of his sheep, killed it and filed her belly with burnt lime, the dragon ate the sheep and become thirsty so he went for a drink. What followed is self explanatory since burnt lime reacts violently with water.

In mythologie, that snakes and dragons are related is no suprise if you consider that the ancient greek word for snake and dragon is the very same. Also observe that snakes are nearly universially seen as devoueres, venomous and tricksters (also as wise and heales.) Dragons are similar. But indifferent to snakes they are less seen as devouerers or healers and more as 'ruling' an area and or guarding something. You could say in mythology snakes are the end of things. Be that the existance of something (like the sun in egypts case or the world in norse) or the destruction of things. (By curing sickness and injury, preventing dealth in the case of the snake as a healing symbol) While dragons are maintain things. They keep something from being destroyed or changed (keeping gods protected in asia, keeping treasures and thus the greed of people in check in europe, keeping princesses from being dispoiled by men, keeping the crops growing by bringing rain, etc) You could even go political and say snakes in mythology are progressives and dragons are conservatives. But at the same time they are very very similar.

The word "dragon" came from the Ancient Greek verb "derkomai" (I see), "edrakon" (I saw), "dedorka" (I have seen), and its participle form "drakon" (genitive "drakontos"), because a snake's eyes are always open and can see, came a word Greek "drakon", Latin "draco", which at first (e.g. in Virgo) meant "big snake"; time and mythology and imagination did the rest.

Fun fact - In the Finnish language the word "Dragon" is "Lohikäärme" - Lohi = Salmon (The fish). Käärme = Snake (The serpent). So it's a "Salmon Snake". Due to the fact in old Finnish mythology (Yes we had our very own one too) dragon's did not exist as a concept, the word to describe the being was invented much later - Around same time the first draft of the written version of said language was being forged to be used.

In my story, my dragons are large and more bird-like. Having feathers and raptor-like features. I’ve been doing a large amount of research into extinct animals such as pterodactyls, and the recently discovered Chinese bat-wing dinosaur that glided from tree to tree. My dragons don’t breathe fire, however, they have a larger set of lungs that allow them to throw gusts of winds over 600 miles per hour. This being inspo from Skyrim of course. ❤️ And they can make a ear-bleeding screech. They however do not use these traits on their own whim, they evolved to take these commands from their human counterparts. They were domesticated, and are basically giant Hell birbs.
@scornbass15525 жыл бұрын
Wow! How big are these critters? Are they four or six limbed? If four, are they bipeds or quadrupeds? PS- how about giving them acid/ venom spray? Also, I'm looking forward to reading your story :)
@kattycharisma5 жыл бұрын
Suneish Basu my dragons are modeled after the GOT dragons, so they have wyvern bodies(two back legs and wings only.) They don’t spit venom but throw gusts of winds. They have a thick layer of feathers(except for their wings which are wing membrane.) Their wind power causes an explosion when contacted with solid objects. But they only do this when their human counterpart says so. It’s more a bred thing that happened over time like how we choose better traits for certain animals to make different breeds.
@scornbass15525 жыл бұрын
@@kattycharisma coooool! Are they bipeds or quadrupeds? And how big, in meters or feet, if I may ask?
@kattycharisma5 жыл бұрын
Technically they’d be bipeds. But on the ground and how they support their front weight is by their thumb claws on their wings so they walk on their wings and grab ahold of cliffs and such. And depending on the breed of dragon depends on the size. Some can be as tall as a giraffe others the size of a plane(but as they get bigger they fly less. The biggest known dragon on my world was said to be so big that she could only glide for short distances at a time.)
@scornbass15525 жыл бұрын
@@kattycharisma actually, ma'am, that makes the dragons quadrupeds. Regardless of the number of limbs, the terms refer only to how many limbs the creature utilises to move on the ground. Biped means a creature that walks on two limbs. A quadruped walks on four limbs. I'm pretty excited about these critters, and wonder where I may read your work. May I ask the name of your work?

The Bakunawa is a serpent-like dragon in Philippine mythology. It is believed to be the cause of eclipses, earthquakes, rains, and wind. The movements of the Bakunawa served as a geomantic calendar system for ancient Filipinos and were part of the shamanistic rituals of the babaylan. It is usually depicted with a characteristic looped tail and a single horn on the nose. It was generally believed to be a sea serpent, but are also variously believed to inhabit either the sky or the underworld. Due to increasing trade contacts with South Asia and the Indianization of Southeast Asia, the Bakunawa later became syncretized with the Nāga, Rahu, and Ketu of Hindu-Buddhist mythology. Etymology Bakunawa is believed to be originally a compound word meaning "bent snake", from Proto-Western-Malayo-Polynesian *ba(ŋ)kuq ("bent", "curved") and *sawa ("large snake", "python"). Spelling variants include Vakonawa, Baconaua, or Bakonaua. Source: Wikipedia

The idea that dragons breath fire is belived to had been spread by the christian, in a way to tie the myth of the dragon as a creature from the pits of hell. Fafnir (the dragon that inspired the creation of Smaug) was a dwarven prince that killed his own brother because of the treasure of their family, then he was cursed to become a dragon that breath poison
@theapexsurvivor95385 жыл бұрын
@Ranem Shain yes, poison. Most older dragons breathed poisonous clouds rather than fire. The hydra for example breathed acid that are through flesh. Typhon and leviathan are the two earliest flame breathes. Across their history smoke, poison and storm clouds were the most prevalent before Christianity spread, likely because fire was probably viewed more positively in earlier civilizations...

"Fiery pits of Hell" is a massive misconception, stemming from the Greek depiction of Hades. Blame it on the twisting of facts for manipulation, and the bible not being translated/available to the general population for a an incredibly long time. The ancient Hebrews believed when you die your soul goes to Sheol, where you sleep until judgment day. There's the lake of fire, but it exists to destroy Satan and truly evil souls, and not eternal torment. It's a shame that this is still a niche fact.
@zionthedragon88665 жыл бұрын
Actually, the fire breathing didn't steam from Christians, but your right not ALL dragons breathed fire, because most of those creatures you mentioned weren't dragons. The first ACTUAL dragons come from Welsh/French/(?)Spanish(?) Celtic culture, were fire was renewal and creation of life, and snakes were seen as rebirthing, thus they took the 2, along with other various Celtic concepts & animals, and combined it with snakes to make the first dragons. Other cultures combined their concepts to get their dragon like creatures, which Christians demonized the Celtic dragon to be breathing hell, and turned all poison into fire because of it's burning properties, and then turned all world's serpents into dragons as spawns of "satin". But since mountains proteced China, their dragon-like creatures stayed good, but Christianity eventually found it's way over there, and they became called dragons too.

Dragons are the ultimat guardian and protective figures. They are the closest creature to dieties and the ultimat guardian only toped by gods protectivness over their followers. Heck. In many asien mythologies dragons are the top gods personal and greatest gurad. And in western myth they were second to the devil in many stories. Being guardians doesnt mean they are good. And being guarded comes with a price, be that prayer, sacrifice, gold or virgins (keep in mind for example that in stories where a place is terrorized by a dragon, no enemy force other then the dragon is present. So aside of his treasure the dragon is guarding his interests. The people who feed him sacrifices.) Asian dragons guard people and knowledge. European dragons guard treasures and princesses. Scp-1762 dragons guard innocence and fantasy. Theres no suprise to me that dragons are one of the most powerfull and popular creatures in mythologie.
@zionthedragon88665 жыл бұрын
That's the thing though, most western "dragons" weren't dragons, and the actual western dragons were close to gods in the same way Chinese lóngs(they too were never called dragons or like dragons in the same way) were to gods. Also, the Chinese had some pretty evil "dragons" in it's culture, so they too, were evil. Also they were described as having demon eyes. So asian "dragons" rule people(which sounds more malevolent than good) and guards the water, While the actual western dragon rule over magic and guards sacred wells/springs of healing. Yeah, no suprise to me either that serpents like dragons and other reptile creatures are popular in mythology.

@@evodolka Well, everyone in real life seems to agree with him, even though I wasn't given enough time to respond or explain my side of the story. And everyone acts, saying they shouldn't care, because that I got into a "fight" with them and lost, thus I am now "butt hurt" and the other person was right. When ironically, most have them have said or done something VERY similar, in the past. I was gonna say: how would every religion, country, and culture have the same exact word in the same language for dragon? It doesn't seem to make sense. Plus, the fact that the creatures neither share the same traits, powers, ideals, and hopes, dreams, & fears represented in the other draconic creatures. It's like looking at another ancient religion, looking at their thunder god, and looking at other religious thunder gods, and saying that they are ALL Zeus, if that makes any sense. Although alot of people claim the origin is unknown of the name, that's actually a lie, as it does have a origin, but most don't care or want to accept it, due to different of opinion and views, which is ok. But the orginal western dragons WERE good.

One of the oldest words for Serpent is Kane, and in modern times it can be spelled Cane with a C. It's very interesting that one of the original terms for Werewolf, is the word Lycan, but within the word Lycan, exists the morpheme "can" in which denotes the word Serpent. All the myths of olde have been altered, transformation was always attributed to the Reptile, not a Wolf. To even morph into an animal, one must possess the Serpent gene. Lycanthrope, Therianthrope, Metamorphose, and Shapeshifting, all contain the same basic principle which is transformation. I have been labeled as a fool for predicating the idea of Werewolves, and Dogs, as being euphemistic of the Dragon, or Serpent. The word Lycan is a derivation of Lukànthrõpos, which in my dictionary denotes a Reptilian Shapeshifter. Why even the video game "Mortal Kombat" (which is really MK Ultra) has made an allusion to the Reptilian with one of it's characters who is called Lui Kang. The name Lui Kang, is pronounced remarkably similar to the word Lukànthrõpos, and this video game character finishes his victims off by shapeshifting into a giant Dragon, thus devouring them whole. That clearly is meant to exhibit the motif of Serpent devouring Man. The very word "kang" in Lui Kang simply means Dragon. People will often refer to star Sirius, as the dog star, unbeknownst that the morpheme "sir" within the word Sirius, denotes the sirpent or serpent. Upon attaching the affix "on" to the word Dog, it will spell out the word Dogon. The word Dogon is vaguely similar to the word Dragon, and there are of course the Dogon tribes of West Africa, whom share a special relationship with star Sirius. So it's really not the Dog star, but rather the Dragon star, which is more fitting because star Sirius, is spelled in a cryptic way in which denotes the Sirpent.
