I kinda always thought that Azathoth might only be his physical form, while Yog-Sothoth could be the mental aspect/form of Azathoth that was sundered at the begining of the universe the power needed to start it all so great it injuried him/her/It. I mean if Azathoth is all powerful, and Yog-Sothoth is all knowing it would make sense he could be the mind of the being sealed outside keeping him asleep till it enters the universe. I have the exact same idea. Azathoth is the unconscious while Yog-Sothoth is the conscious. Azathoth is imprisoned in the center of existence while Yog-Sothoth is exiled beyond existence. Azathoth is Omnipotent but mindless while Yog-Sothoth is Omniscient but locked out the world. The Elder Gods keep them apart for they don't want the dream to end.

Azathoth was clearly a HUGE inspiration for the whole plot in Bloodborne. The entire concept of the hunter's dream and the moon presence is basically the same story. The only difference being that the Great Ones in Bloodborne are not as powerful as Lovecraft's monsters.

Hah, Azathoth: The Daemon Sultan, The Blinded Idiot God, Nuclear chaos, and my favorite "Master of all Creation and Destruction". Azathoth is a god that one should and never will be able to understand since he is beyond every Outer God including Yog-Sothoth and is their supreme and Omnipotent Ruler. Everything is a dream to Azathoth and there is nothing that is not a dream to Azathoth; be it Infinite and Beyond Dimension, Existence, Nonexistence, Life and Death.....ETC. Just like how everything can't be existed without Yog-Sothoth nothing can't be created without Azathoth. While Yog-Sothoth is the Omniverse of Cthulu itself, transcending Infinite Dimension and is existing outside of it at the sametimes. He is still limited by Azathoth, and is still consider a dream to him regardless. Everything will continue to exist as long as Azathoth is still asleep (Keep that flute and music playing). If he were to be awake at some point in time, everything would be ripped apart and be all one again with Azathoth. In short, Azathoth is 100% impossible to be destroy and he is above Unmanned Darkness, Nameless Mist by the way, who is actually Yog-Sothoth parent (only Nameless Mist).

Miguel Pereira I got a big compendium. I really enjoy some of the ‘simpler’ ones actually, and I say that only because they seem simple and I believe that is the intent. I don’t know why but I really love Dagon. It’s short and sweet, but the madness of the situation, the inexplicable events, and the way it is told from the perspective of someone with ZERO understanding of what’s happening makes it so much more interesting. It makes me want to know more, and leaves me with nothing but questions! I’ve definitely learned from reading Lovecraft the value of this perspective. Horror is so much more effective when you don’t know what is going on. Knowledge is like a torch, it chases away the shadows. But at the same time, light begets darker shadows, so the ultimate goal IMO is to find a balance. Just enough light to make you ask questions, but not enough to show you what is lurking around the corner....

To add a modern twist to the Azathoth story. I would imagine him as the one running the simulation that is supposed to be the universe and existence we all are a part of. His "Dream" is merely a holographic creation to keep the great and horror handled God preoccupied and entertained. When he stops being interested in this universe and decides to stir again. All he has to do is turn off the program. Thus blinking us all out of existence as he rises again to find himself alone in the real universe that he is left to rule. All of us, our history and everything that has ever happened in the universe we know, he simply turned off as though we would turn off the computer in front of us. Just thought of that off the top of my head while listening to you talk. The Great God Azathoth in today's scientifically minded world would be considered as the one running the simulation that is our existence. :)

Derleth couldn't give up the mentality of cosmic entities that are equal and opposite. It is a compelling idea as some of the dominant religions show. Also it lets us believe we have significance in creation. Feeling insignificant, as was Lovecraft's style, is not something most people would willingly embrace. Lovecraft's gods were more forces of nature then powerful individuals. Unknowing and uncaring. Derleth brought it back around to what humans are comfortable with. A battle between champions of order and chaos. Of course one could spin that back around and make it a lie by one of the seemingly truly self-aware and cruel of the pantheon. He of a thousand faces.

After you examine the various beings in the mythos, I'd recommend doing a series looking at more modern Cthulhu mythos, such as those written by Brian Lumley. His works are, in my opinion, some of the most well written stories containing the mythos, and he has filled in so many of the gaps in the stories of these ancient horrors.

I gotta confess that although I'm fascinated by Lovecraftian Mythos (minus the racism from the original author), it doesn't scare me much. I wonder how much of an impact the Mythos can have on most present day readers as most of us have now some understanding of the vastness of the universe, our limits to comprehend the quantic scale and its workings, our insignificance, our powerlessness before the laws of nature and the notion that our planet and our universe won't last forever.

Don't you think he might have had a hand in that? There were plenty who read his short stories as a child in the magazines, his books, interested in something that would have a near hand to hand correlation with the discoveries some of these children grew up to have a hand in making. The scary bit of Lovecraft I wouldn't say are the cosmic entities, the cults, I feel it is the realization of how puny and inconsequential we are on the grand scale. I don't know, rambling.

To me, that makes the Cthulhu Mythos all that much scarier. We in this modern age as our place in the cosmos develops and advances, lean ever more on science and what we can see or label, hiding under the false illusion with each "major" technological breakthrough each discovery that we are masters of our own fate even when its so clearly obvious we are not. Humanity chooses to to turn a blind eye and continues to do so until something like Cthulhu comes along that yanks this riddled metaphysical tarp right off exposing us to a place we haven't visited since first exiting our mother's wombs. A place where the tools we use to convince ourselves otherwise i.e quantum physics, biology, mathematics, astronomy, logic and thought itself crumbles into fine white powder under an uncaring cosmic tentacle.

Now I see where inspiration for Mortal Kombat's "The One Being" came from. Though we never see it, it is stated that all of the MK universe is it's dream, and it is subconsciously trying to awaken itself and (unbeknownst to them) influences many of the series bad guys, and if it awakens, all of the universe is pretty much gone lol

In D&D, I recently created a Warlock whos patron is Azathoth. He doesn't worship him or desire to summon him to this reality. Instead, he is terrified that such an entity exists and that existence itself is dependent on his continued slumber. It is now his life-long mission to keep Azathoth asleep and make sure he never wakes up. He may decide at some point in the future to start a cult dedicated to this task.

Although he doesnt do anything, Azathoth had to be my favorite within the Lovecraftian universe. Its mysterious, demands an open mind to even ponder, and is terrifying. I do like the theory that if it wakes up then all will cease to exist, but i think it being the last of anything in a great cosmic war is awesome too. Interestingly enough, having recently listened to videos explaining thr DC Universe and Multiverse, its awesome to think that everything within the DC Universe is within a sphere. All conciousness, dreams, entities and beyond are all within the shape of an eye. Makes me think of it all being a fragment of Azathoths dreams

Talking about Warcraft lore here, in warcraft classic/vanilla, there was a book titled The Old Gods and the Ordering of Azeroth. On page 5 of the book, it says there's 5 evil gods chained beneath the planet. This book was removed in later expansions. So only viewable by playing Warcraft classic again. As every future mention of the old gods refer to only 4 old gods. Y'Shaarj, C'Thun, Yogg-Saron and N'Zoth all quite easily represent/reference names of Lovecraft old gods. But the 5th one is never mentioned ever. Possible it was retconned by Blizzard, but I think they are trying to cover that Azeroth the actual planet everyone lives on is in fact the 5th old god. It's name is super similar to Azathoth also. and since the other 4 all based on real old god names but slightly changed I think the actual planet is the 5th one :(

Have you heard of the game Hearthstone? It is filled with characters based on the Occult and Lovecraftian lore, like Yogg-Saron, N'Zoth, C'Thun (the Old Gods). I find it interesting how this type of stuff is thrown into popular games without ever being discussed much, or even acknowledged.

Smeagle Reegle ..they are beings of the warcraft universe and the game world of warcraft. Blizzard (who created both of the games, WoW and hearthstone) got a lot of inspiration from lovecraft. Hearthstone is built entirely after the warcraft universe, but it only has the least of it, the warcraft universe is waayy huger than the hearthstone universe, thats where the "old gods" originally come from.

I know I'm late, but fun fact: The SCP Foundation has an unknown entity known as SCP-579 that no one can know about, with the entire description expunged. Some posted their headcanon was that Azathoth is SCP-579. Which, according to SCP-001 Roget's proposal and SCP-2998, SCP-055 is something that not only woke up Azathoth, but also put it back to sleep. Hence why combining the two objects (A square peg in a round hole) resets the world/universe.

The idea of him being a dreamer is the most interesting part. As for being summoned. This is possible. I mean we dream yet we exist within our dreams on some level. The same can be true for it. He might however just envision himself as being just another elder god. Because what lonely being would not dream of having compatriots, or rivals. So to most that is what he appears to be. A being On par with Yog, and Niggurath. But those eldest of Gods have, by some artifice, gained a glimpse of the truth. And thusly they make sure to keep him asleep, Bound to the rules he does not know he controls. He is blind to the truth. He does not know what he really is. He is the Sultan, High est among all gods, and yet sleeps chained and shackled. Or at least, he pretends to be.
