Very useful information. My six year old is fascinated with beetles. I have never been interested in anything that didn't have a V8 and four wheel drive, but we may have a beetle in the fleet soon. Keep posting, I may need it. :)

@@TheEZGZ can you justify telling us about cleaning oil galleries? I've read some feel it's essential when rebuilding, but have seen very little on this important subject. My motor hasn't run in 25 years, so I think it would need to be done. I've seen how to pop out plugs, but nothing on cleaning the passages.Thank you! John

I always full flow my case and add a cartridge filter. In the process (which I have several vids) I can see down the main and most of the time I see nothing. If the inside of your case cleans up with whatever you are using for cleaner. (solvents, simple green, Car wash pressure washer) Those options are good enough to clean the oil galley's. I like the car wash and aim it at every oil outlet I can find on the case. Main bearings, cambearings, up the pickup tube. Just use the high pressure wash with soap and then go back and rinse. Then take it home and blow it out with air. If you don't have a compressor leave it out in the sun so it doesn't rust the steel parts. Squirt some WD40 or brake cleaner or gas. No Magic special stuff just go to the extent that it satisfy's YOUR brain. Remember these little engines have been built on dirt floors or outdoors in 3rd world country's for over 50 years...... NO matter how hard I try. I always find something screwed up during and after my builds. The factory screwed up plenty of stuff as they went out the door too. Most importantly have fun with it.

Cheers EZGZ Just one more question,do you keep the valve gaps the same.Just learning how to rebuild(reading tom wilsons book on how to build your vw engine)Rebuilt the bottom end last christmas went all around Europe this year without a glitch.Just took the heads off to check all ok,seemed fine a bit off carbon build up but nothing to drastic though,maybe a little play in the guide so going to replace Finding your videos very informative,any tips on stock engine are appreciative.Loving your tips keep it up for us novices in the UK...

Hi Sean, Boy you asked the wrong guy if you want a straight answer. I'm all over the map on valve lash. I try to make them the same but when adjusting my valve lash I might go anything from zero to .006 depending on how I am going to use it and how long between inspections. Sometimes I just don't want the noise and other times I want to extend my maint inteval. Hope you understand what I mean. Kinda mood and purpose driven. Try it different and see what you like.

Cars are just one of those thing that time and efforts on are rewarded, build your own engine and you will be able you to keep it running in top condition. With a little work one good car can last for ever, really the idea of buying a new car every X years is a idea from the car makers, carr are built so that at 12-15 years multiple major parts fail forceing the sale or costly rebuild of the parts.

Hey EZGZ. Thanks for all of the informative videos. I have learned a great deal from them. I have a wee question for you. I have a '66 Beetle that is my baby. I grew up around VW's but spent almost two decades without toching one. It still has the original 1300cc motor in it as well as the original 30 PICT-1 carb. I have a 009 distributor in it currently. When I purchased it, the original distributor was missing. My problem, I think, is with the carb. It has a 125 main jet and a 55 idler jet, which I think, is stock for being 800 ft. above sea level. All of that aside, it runs very rich and has done so since I bought it two years ago. I rebuilt the carb about six months ago with an off the shelft rebuild kit, but that didn't change anything. What do you think is causing it to run rich? By the way, it does have a later model, '72 I think, fuel pump. Thanks for the help.
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 10 жыл бұрын
I also have a 66 named valorie. It was having the problem you describe although I was running a PICT-3. The same problem and effect could happen with your PICT 30-1. I love that little carb The PICT-30-2 look like a nightmare. Watch this vid and let me know if it works out. Appreciate your viewing my vids. VW Solex PICT-3 Carburetor Problem & Solution

Hi So do you recommend putting a washer under stock springs?Just rebuilding my heads new everything.
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 9 жыл бұрын
Well, the factory didn't and they worked fine on a stock engine. It's just something a little extra i like to do and if you do a lot of high RPM. The spring does vibrate and turn and I like to think I'm not cutting into the head material. That's just me. Do what feels good and you can afford when ever you can. Thanks for watching

4:58 snapping and popping like a lean condition? Yet you all ready said intake was slightly open cuz lash tightened up. Wouldn't that mean combustion popping through intake valve?
