Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath (Reaction) (Athems Series)
Original Video: • Jethro Tull - Locomoti...
Jethro Tull are a British progressive rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, in 1967.
In 1989 the Grammys introduced a new category: Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording.
Metallica, Iggy Pop, Jane’s Addiction showed up for the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, none of them could possibly have expected that, when award presenter Alice Cooper opened the envelope the award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording of 1989 would go to a folksy, flute- fronted prog rock band: the decidedly non-metal, far from hard-rocking Jethro Tull.
Jethro Tull didn't attend the awards since they believed there was no logical possibility of claiming the award - nobody else did either.

"Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull is about the unstoppable forces of capitalism and population growth. The song's writer, Ian Anderson, said it was his first song to address a topic that might be more relevant to the modern world. Anderson was born in 1947, when the Earth's population was less than a third of what it is today, and he found it sobering to consider that the population had more than tripled in a single person's lifetime. The song's opening line, "Pouring of polluting breath from a big old-fashioned steam engine," references Anderson's childhood, when steam engines were common.

In the future you should watch Jethro Tull live. Amazing shows. I love your reactions

Fully agree that their Live performances are great - but for this track you do not often get a full version of that great Piano/Guitar intro and as this is usually their finale track it is often done as a medley and so might confuse someone new to Tull.

One of the best and very underrated bands ever IMO - to think Tony Iommi was invited to play guitar for them at one point is amazing.

I Second that. Ian Anderson's energy is amazing. And I almost always prefer studio cuts.

Who says Jethro Tull isn't Hard Rock. LOL The Grammy winner, Crest Of A Knave, is one of the best rock albums ever IMO. And you have GOT to see a live performance!

Fil, one of my all time favorite live performance groups (I've been to so many of their gigs). Interesting you said Bluesy type at the beginning, they were a blues cover band at the start of their careers. I liked your interpretation. #QcumberSquad #jethroTull - Fil, I'm off back to the study.

They've gone through much evolution, starting out blues rock, then prog rock, folk rock, electronic, and ever onwards; but always with an identifiably unique and consistent core sound. I'd say they are more hard rock performing live than on the albums. My interpretation of this was that the train was life, and the all-time loser protagonist was being swept along with no control over what happened when. I like your interpretation, too, even if neither of us read Ian Anderson's mind!

With all due respect, I find it hard to believe that people this age haven't heard Jethro Tull before. Greetings.

You really need to listen to the whole album. It's a concept album. Try some music by YES one of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time. Some good ones include "Roundabout", "Awaken", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium", "Turn of the Century"... Loads of good ones.

In fact is is decidedly NOT a concept album! Ian Anderson was so angry the critics called it a concept album he said "I will show the mother of all concept albums" and proceeded to write and record "Thick as a Brick" which is a mockery of concept albums, done in a sort of Monty Python style, and it in fact outshone all the concept albums of the time, despite being tongue in cheek satire! So from the horse's mouth, Ian Anderson the composer, and front man of Jethro Tull it was not a concept album!
