"Satisfying," and "gobsmacked" and some pretty apt words, and I'm confident they'll apply for you throughout your entire journey through Realm of the Elderlings. It's funny, when I step back from Hobb's storytelling and look at the individual parts, there's some truly dark shit in there! And yet, when I consider the whole, the term "dark" doesn't even make the top ten words to describe what I experienced and felt. It's fun to reexperience a fave via your astute perspective.
@LienesLibrary

I have no doubt Hobb will continue to impress - and yeah, darkness I think doesn't come to mind because it's not the goal or the project of the books? so, much like life, darkness is inescapable (you have to be realistic, as Logen would say) but it isn't trying to dwell on that or to make you come away with a message that is dark in some way and that's the big difference I think

@@LienesLibrary You're right, it's all about perspective (and not just Fitz's) - Sort of the whole: "It's not that we fall, it's that we keep getting back up," thing. Looking forward to following on. :)

I'm thrilled you're enjoying your first trip through RoTE. Yes, Tawny Man raises the level again, but the events in Ship of Destiny are PLENTY to look forward to for now :) There are some *major* general plot spoilers for Farseer, but they're right at the END of Ship of Destiny, and you don't realize they're spoilers until quite late into Farseer - so *how* spoiled is up for debate - be aware. Also, while Liveships can be read as a standalone, if you do intend to continue into the Realm of the Elderlings, you *will need* to go back anyway, and read the Fitz books in order, starting with Farseer. Thanks for sharing your journey Liene :)

I LOVE Liveship so much! It took me a solid 6 months before I could say for sure that I like it more than Farseer but I definitely do. That character you mentioned is my favorite character in fantasy because it is the most believable and real growth arc I’ve read! And I’m just starting the third book of Tawny Man and so far I don’t think it’s better than Liveship but we shall see 😊

Hey Liene! I’m reading The Realm of the Elderlings on my channel, and I think Hobb is simply superb. I will start the Rain Wild Chronicles in February, very excited about that. I agree with you on Malta, her development is fantastic, my favorite Hobb character so far along with Fitz and the Fool. I Love that you are enjoying this Trilogy so much. I personally loved it on another whole different level, I thought it was miles better Farseer, although the attachment to Fitz, Fool, and Burrich make the Farseer Trilogy a very special one for me. Hope you keep loving this series!!
@derrisreaditbefore
@derrisreaditbefore 2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm adding to a loud chorus already ... Rain Wilds, is.... less. From any other author, Rain Wilds would be amazing, from Hobb (between her 2 BEST entries in RoTE), it's a slump in form. Go in with low expectations, and be happily surprised - going in expecting another Tawny Man, you'll be disappointed. The first two have the same 'energy' as the first half of most first books - we're waiting for things to get going. The second two lift noticeably, when the story truly gets underway. The things we learn in Rain Wilds give an impressive level of understanding for many of the other events in the saga, so I hope you enjoy it.

I just finished the first one in the trilogy and I'm just blown away. Loved Farseer but love this even more. I've stumbled into my second favorite author in Robin Hobb, second only to Stephen King. There's a blurb on the covers of her work from GRRM that says "fantasy the way it ought to be written"; and I completely agree with that sentiment. All art is subjective but more people will LOVE this series than do not. Read it. Buy it. Hope they do some fancy illustrated releases soon.

Yes, Tawny Man is even better. Fool’s Errand was my first five star read (granted, I have been ranking only for a few months). But I confess the serpents at the beginning of Liveship annoyed me. (They grew on me). Fool’s Errand was perfectly written, though. Almost done with Golden Fool. Hobb does write some very dark things; her character suffer from their fair share of trauma. But she handles that trauma with such care - both in how it’s presented in the moment and in how the characters deal with the aftermath. And, her characters are so complex. She is a master.

Great to hear of your love for Hobb. You're such an honest and straightforward reviewer that, when you love something, I figure it must really be good! I'm on the fence about whether to dive into the world of Farseer/Liveship or Malazan this year. Both are so long. But I think it's probably time for me to give Hobb a shot. Liveship sounds more interesting to me than Farseer but it seems like you really need to start with "Assasin's Apprentice"?
@emilyreads5207
@emilyreads5207 2 жыл бұрын
I so recommend starting with Farseer, simply because there are some things in that that inform Liveship (more so in the third book). Some don’t like Assassin’s Apprentice, but you have to remember that Fitz, our POV, is 6 at the start of the trilogy, and 15 or so when it ends.
@derrisreaditbefore
@derrisreaditbefore 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, Farseer is a critical part of the RoTE - you'll need to read it even if you hit Liveships first. With that in mind, there are some fairly *major* plot spoilers for Farseer in Liveships. They occur late in the Liveships series, and you don't pick up on them until late in Farseer, so *how* spoiled is difficult to say. The biggest problem with Farseer is it's titles. Assassin's Apprentice is a *dreadful* name. It is NOT a story about a boy learning to become a badass killer. It's a coming of age story, about a little boy we meet age 6, told in 1st person. I think the expectations of readers impact their enjoyment of Farseer a great deal. Whichever you decide to start with, I hope you enjoy it, and continue into the later works.
@LienesLibrary
@LienesLibrary 2 жыл бұрын
imo Farseer is fantastic and if you're willing to read something slower before getting to dessert (Liveship) I definitely recommend reading Farseer first, but I don't want anyone to not read Hobb because they didn't want to force themselves to read Farseer so if Liveship is calling to you, then go for it
