our mx135 and McCormick have the snap ring style but that might be a European thing since they "came" from there by the way if you go after a cheaper road runner tractor I highly recommend looking at european tractors from John deere and case we have two as stated and they are awsome tractors for stuff like pulling wagons on the road

How does the tractor know which shaft it has? Is there a switch in the cab for that?

Roger Leiser most john Deere's have a pin inside the tractor that the different shafts push on to change the gearing

Not practical to change, in Europe you can choose one of three or four speeds without changing the tree.

Farmer sometimes I believe your John Deere through and through and would bleed green but sometimes I’m just not sure. Think you’ve taken a strong liken to the mx255😂
