These are cookies I can never get to turn out right no matter what I do. Jessica's are always perfect. She got her recipe from Food Network but her technique is the main key to her success. Today she is teaching us that technique and how to make these cookies. Hopefully I can learn but if not Jessica is just a phone call away!😂😂
Preacher Cookies (No bake cookies by Jessica)

1 stick of butter
1/4 cup cocoa powder

I have loved these cookies for at least 60 years! I don't make them too often because I would eat too many. They are so comforting, I seem to make them in the colder weather.

My mother taught me to make these back in the 70's. The only difference was she didn't use peanut butter , she would add in a small can of coconut and of course a cup of chopped pecans. I'm going to make a batch of these as soon as my roomates leave. Like you, I don't plan on sharing. One thing I've learned when using cocoa I always stir it into the sugar real well, this seems to prevent those little balls that you think are never going to dissolve. Always enjoy your videos.

Yes, my recipe is from the ‘70s as well, and mine says 3 cups of oats plus 1 cup of coconut, no peanut butter. Since then, this recipe has popped up all over without the coconut, plus they’ve added peanut butter now. So you said it exactly, if you overcook them more than one (1) minute, they will be dull and not shiny and they fall apart cuz they’re dryer. They’ll taste okay however, the shiny ones are the best. They are so good and such a fast recipe. I’ve made them at the last minute when we knew company was dropping in. They’re quick to make and everyone loves them. So good.

These go back to the 60s for me! In elementary school, the cafeteria ladies didn't boil the choco mixture enough, and they'd be gooey, like you said. By high school, they'd figured it out and turned out wonderful bar cookies they called Peanut Butter Delight. Football players would roam the cafeteria offering to buy other kid's bars for a quarter. They didn't have much luck, but I was lucky enough to have an aunt who was a cafeteria lady, and she gave the the recipe when I was 12. Those big bubbles, that's what you want, a mixture you can't stir down. Sometime try just pouring it into a pan and cutting it into bars, much easier. You can't beat this cookie. Thanks for the memories!

Same here. I got the recipe from my neighbor who worked in the high school cafeteria. And I don't boil the cocoa either. I add it in after I add the peanut butter. It melts great. Make adjustment with butter and oats to your liking. Always a favorite but never heard it called "Preacher Cookies." Just no bakes.

I love these cookies. I also add about 1/4 cup coconut to mine. I also pour them onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper instead of dipping them out with a spoon. Once they have set, I then cut them into squares. It just saves a little time from doing all the dipping and trying to get them out in a hurry.

That’s what I do👍But I add another ingredient that I learned that is add a 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar to the sugar cocoa mix as you say mix that well before adding to the pot👍👍👍 And I use a thermometer, the temperature needs to be around 225-235 when starting to boil, that’s when I start the timer but I go 2 minutes, doesn’t fail. And I add 2 tablespoons spoons more of milk when mixing the peanut butter and vanilla flavoring in then add the oats.

I love these cookies. I remember the first time I had ever had them. I had spent the night with a girlfriend. We were in early elementary school. Her Dad fixed a batch and before they were set up he let us have one to share. It was still warm and so very good , plus that was the first time I had ever seen a man cook! Boy, was I impressed. Years later, I got the recipe from him. They were my go to comfort food. I went through a rough time of loss in my life when my brother died in a car accident ( decades ago now) and I had this recipe down to a 2-4 cookie portion and made them for my comfort food everyday after work. I gained about 20 lbs.lol I have since lost his recipe and am glad to have come across it here. I will make these again, but not indulge myself as am now a diabetic and food this yummy is not my friend. Am 64 now and enjoyed the memory this elicited. I will never forget. Precious memories,

Thanks Leslie and Jessica! I make these a good bit. I use reg oats (not the gluten free) and they come out fine. My recipe is called Indian Cookies (One Minute Cookies) so they go by different names. I also have another similar recipe that you might want to try....of course using Jessica's tips. 😜 No Bake Fudge Cookies 3 cups quick Oats 1 teaspoon vanilla (I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to add a tbsp if you wanted to) 1 cup chopped pecans or flaked coconut 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup cocoa 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup butter (or margarine)...1 stick Combine oats, vanilla, and nuts in a large bowl (again I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to just add them to the pot if you wanted to). Bring sugar, cocoa, milk, and butter to a rolling boil in a pan. Pour chocolate mixture over oats mixture and mix well. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed (or parchment) paper. Let cool and enjoy. Yields about 5 1/2 dozen cookies. They are good even without the nuts or coconut....which is how my family prefers them. Let me know if you try them.

Also, the last time I made them, instead of spooning them into individual cookies, I spread the whole batch out on my paper fairly thin and then cut them into squares! I've been making these for over 50 years, I've had the ones that don't set up and harden, and what I did was scrape them back into the pot and bring them back to a boil and cook for about a minute and they set up great then. Also I put my peanut butter in , right when i take it off the stove so that it melts into the chocolate, then the vanilla and the oatmeal I add a little at a time. If the liquid looks wet it's done if you add too much oatmeal, it can come out dry and crumbly ( my son devours them regardless) . Another thing , in my area, Northern New Hampshire, the weather plays a part in how these will turn out. I made them on a rainy day and followed the recipe exactly and they came out really dry.

These are my go to cookies. I'm 65yrs old and my mum made these since I was a child. I double the batch and make you place them in an airtight container. These are so quick and easy. That is correct, a must, once starts bubbling, keep stirring for "1" minute. Take off heat. I put vanilla in & quick oats. Since I double the recipe, I must buy the larger containers of oats, peanut butter, sugar. Every inch of my counters are lined with wax paper & once all combined, immediately must start spooning. Mine set pretty quickly, but, I allow them to cool down, then easier to remove from wax paper, then place in airtight containers. I love, love, love, these cookies!!!

I have a hard time making them. They never are shiny. Thank you for showing us how to make them.

That's not unusual since you're using Hersey's cocoa powder and not the chips. You can add a tablespoon of raw coconut oil which is a solid if you want them shiny.

I've made these for decades. I've adjusted the recipe to be healthier and its never fail. My husband loves them. Its fun to watch younger generations discover treats we made as a kid, especially those of us entering our 7th decade!
