Funeral Cake (with a story)

Funeral Cake:
1 stick of butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
2 Tbls cocoa
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 tso baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
Bake in preheated 350° oven for 30 to 35 minutes. let cool.
Frosting:
1 stick butter melted
2/3 cup cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla

My husband passed away over two months ago. We had a celebration of life for him and not a funeral. We did exactly what you said. Family and friends enjoyed talking and enjoying the memories of this sweet guy. So much nicer than funerals!

Gracie Lee, I did the same type of thing when my husband passed away in 2011. I never thought of calling it a celebration of life. We called it a memorial service and it accomplished the same thing. Two of our former pastors and our then pastor were there. The funeral director thought that when it was open for remarks, it would only be about 10 minutes. People were still talking about him an hour later. He was much loved 😊

I made this cake today complete with ground cloves and 9 inch pan. Cut the frosting recipe in half. There was plenty. It is delicious, I love that slight spice taste. Before making I checked online for spices that pairs well with chocolate. Clove is listed. Thanks for sharing!

have you heard of making a box cake taste like a bakery cake? use any box cake mix, any flavor. using box instructions.....substitute the water with milk. and substitute the oil with 2 sticks melted butter. and add one or two extra eggs over what the box calls for. and finally add 1 pkg vanilla dry pudding. bake as directed on box. 😋

I make it like that all the time. It taste more like a homemade cake, not bakery bought cake. I learned about this way about 2 yrs ago and now it’s the only way I make box cakes now!! What a difference!!

Also substitute the oil with mayo or with applesauce and it tastes just as good I don't like to put a lot of butter in my cakes during my cooking because then I feel like Paula Deen

I also mix everything together but before pouring into the pan I turn mixer on whip and whip for just a 1 min to put air in the cake. It makes it lighter and not dense.

Hot melted butter thins the batter. Use room temperature melted butter instead or let it sit awhile to stiffen. Great story.

The school cafeteria ladies when we were children made what we called a Texas chocolate sheet cake. I still make it for special occasions only. Make mine with pecans in the frosting poured over the warm cake. Yummy!😋🤠

It’s basically a potato casserole with hash browns, cream of something soup, sour cream, cheese and seasonings then topped with corn flakes or potato chips and baked. They are really delicious but there are several different variations

@@lindachavezw...246 It's aka Cheesy Potatoes, just Google either one & it'll come up. It's quick & relatively easy & VERY good. It got the nickname funeral potatoes bcuz it seemed like every time someone would pass away & the dinners that followed the ceremony, THIS would always seem to make an appearance. Basically due to the fact it's a VERY large amount, & quick to put together. You can cut the recipe in half too.

Cloves & Cinnamon together give a pumpkin pie-ish flavor to the cake. It's called a spice cake. Great with coffee or tea. Some ginger and a small dash of nutmeg would kick it up too.

Hi miss Leslie and pastor Bryant. I wanted to share an update with you about my boyfriend Chris who had the aortic aneurysm and bad heart valve. Surgery went perfect on Thursday but Chris went onto Afib on Saturday. He's doing better. Thank you so so much for all your prayers. I will be praying for Pastor Bryant that his ablation with go perfect as well. God is the great physician and may He lay his healing hands upon Bryant. The cake looks so delicious.

My daughter and I both had to have ablations and they went well. I guess we inherited some extra pathway that makes our hearts get caught in some crazy endless loop. One of the times it happened to me my daughter drove me to the ER and the doctor told me that they were going to stop my heart and I said where are the paddles to start it up again and he laughed at me and said you watch too much tv. Well how was I supposed to know they were going to give me a shot and tell me to bear down like delivering a baby to make it go back in a normal rhythm. After it happened again I opted for the ablation because when your heart does that crazy over 200 beats per minute you think you are dying. I was lucky that my daughter was home when it happened so she could drive me. I’ve been fine since but my husband was in the same hospital dying of cancer when that happened to me. I really thought she was going to be burying both parents but mine went well. My brother had it and my cousin has it too so it’s a family thing. I hope it is fine, you guys work so hard, we are all praying for you.

While you were making this cake, my mind kept going back to a cake that was a favorite on the school menus. When Bryant said it looked like one he had in school, I just had to share my “school “ cake! It is a Wacky Cake. It uses no egg or dairy and is very, very moist. Another reason it is called wacky is supposedly you can mix in the pan you cook it in. I don’t! We generally eat it warm and just sprinkled with powdered sugar. Wacky Cake 1 1/2 c flour 1 c sugar 4 T cocoa 1/2 t salt 1 t soda 1 t vanilla 1T vinegar 6 T oil 1 c water Mix all together and place in an 8x8 or 9x9 greased pan and bake at 350 degrees until toothpick comes out clean. About 30 min. So very good!

That was Jeanne Robertson and she had been a Miss America contestant and she was a comedian and public speaker. She has passed away now but her husband was a big part of her act and she gave the skit about never send a left brain man to the grocery store because she gave him a list of ingredients to make some 7up pound cakes for funerals and he came home with tons of extra ingredients, it’s so funny because my husband would have done the same thing that hers did. It’s probably still on you tube, it’s so funny.

When my daughter was a teen, she went to boarding school. Every time there was a nursing home nearby. When someone died, she would go to the kitchen and make her specialty , homemade bread. Some students were from areas of the country that didn't take food to mourners. One asked why she always took the bread, and she replied," My Mom's a preacher's wife, and she says never go to a funeral or to see a new baby empty handed."

Friendly tip, turn mixer on low to begin with. It will cut way down on splashing liquids and flour. Ground cloves is wonderful in pies, muffins along with cinnamon. Also when creaming butter and sugar together, definitely have beaters going slower and longer. This will actually fluff up that bit before you add the eggs. I’ve learned this through experience. 😊❤️🇨🇦

Looks good. Keep in mind that even a hand mixer has multiple speeds. Use the lowest speed to start with and you won't have such a mess in your kitchen.

Chocolate cake to make more people "show up" and stay for the funeral reception in times when it may have been a rare & irresistible, hard-to-come-by treat. Me thinks.

My daughter and I are both on KETO. We both have really bad knees and my knees have not been hurting near as bad since we have been on KETO. But we decided we would have a cheat day every other Sunday. Well last time I ate some chocolate candy and the next morning I could hardly stand the pain in my knees. SO I decided no mater how much I wanted something sweet the pain was not worth it.

The cake looks really delicious. Like Pastor B we had chocolate sheet cake in Elementary School too!! One of our school's cooks lived up the road from us and Mom mentioned to her about my loving the cake they served in school she gave Mom a downsized version of the recipe and it had a surprise ingredient in it. "Miracle Whip". But, one would never know that it is in it. Made one delicious cake. The frosting was a 8oz. Container of whip cream with a cup of Confectioner sugar stirred in it. Everyone in my family loved it.

Oo I think maybe alspice would work in place of cloves? But with the cinnamon, I think cloves would be good. If you're going to have spice anyway...im not a huge chocolate fan though
