This past weekend I carried a carboard box to my car and noticed within about 20 minutes that I got contact dermititis on my left wrist and hand. It got red, bumpy, itchy and hives started to form. I started a jewelweed tincture with vodka about 4 weeks ago and I took some out of the pint size jar and put it in a small spray bottle and sprayed it on my wrist. It took the itch away immediately and I sprayed it a couple of times and within 20 minutes all the hives & redness were completely gone. Jewelweed is amazing.

I didnt see anyone else mention it here (& haven't made it through the video yet!) But one of the most beautiful things about this plant is the underside veins of the leaves turn silver (hence: jewel!) When held underwater. A totally unnecessary detail of the plant, but again, God. 😍💕 good to help identify too!

Hold a leaf under water ! It will show sliver colors if you're not sure when there are no flowers. Used it all my life

We have these ALL over our property. One of the twenty plants I identified and harvested to make medicinals and this is our first year here. There are so many wild edibles all around us sometimes I wonder why I sow seeds. Worship the Creator not His creation. 🙏 It is so awesome you get to spend time with your grandmother. I have noticed those of us who lost our grandparents when we were young due to them being smokers. Even though I love tobacco I know if I want to live a long life I should quit. I've heard smoking raspberry leaf, catnip and mullein help to minimize cravings and heal lungs.

Loving your content so much. What I really resonate with you and your mom is that you are life long learners. I tend to get a little intimidated by all the knowledge some herbalists have and foolishly think that all that knowledge lives in their head at all times. Watching you refer to books and letting us know that you are going to research topics lets me know that you never stop learning what you need to know. I learned of Jewel Weed when I was hiking the AT. Absolutely the best antihistamine in the woods! I would harvest some juicy stalks when I found them and tuck them in my pack, when you get an irritation (bug bite, STINGING NETTLES, poison ivy, etc) it will remedy your issues! I split the stalk with my finger nail and rub the juicy flesh on the irritated area. IT WORKS!!! (And the seeds are fun to harvest...they 'pop' open)

As a kid Jewl weed would grow along the wood line in the backyard. Poison Ivy did too. I loved to pop all the seed pods by just gently touching them and watching how far the seeds would pop out. Bing, Bing, Bing. 8 inches, 12 inches, the tail one went 2 feet! Lol. My dad would tell me to rub the sap on my Poison Ivy if I had any.

I do not have first-hand experience with poison ivy/oak/sumac exposure, but I would instinctively go to plantain weed. It's what I use on bug bites and the plains tribes used it for rattlesnake bite because of its drawing power. I've also used dock weed for the same purpose. But, if I ever come across jewelweed, I will try that too. Thanks for a fantastic video.

First step in poison ivy exposure: wash the area as if you got in dirty crankcase oil. Dawn dish soap and a wash cloth or coarse paper towel. Mechanical action is needed to remove it. If you don't know of exposure until itching starts, and as long as no open blisters, use the same methods to remove the oil and symptoms immediately vanish. Practice ahead of time by using dirty oil/grease and getting it off you as the ivy oil is clear but the same techniques work. Then pursue the herbal remedies if needed.

Hummingbirds love the flowers, I have lots of it growing around my porch, once it blooms the hummingbirds show up. I make jewelweed soap, I infuse the jewelweed into the lard and also boil the jewelweed in water to use when I make the soap... old fashioned lye soap made with lard is very good at cutting the oil from the poison oak off your skin...

Thank you! This spring, I looked for jewelweed on our new homestead, but with no flowers, I couldn't be sure. But this month, wiw, at the back of my hill garden, the flowers were unmistakable!! Right there, as you said, by the poson ivy, glad that I saw it first! Thanks, I was goingvto dry it, and tincture in glycerin, but the fresh in wotch hazel sounds better! In the meantime, I did buy a bar of jewelweed soap, it did help my allergic eczema! A real blessing, thank you.

As a gymnastics coached we used to make ice in the small paper cups people keep by toothbrushing sinks. It made the ice easy to hold when kids needed it for brush burns and stuff like that. That method would probably work well for the jewel weed ice.

I’m so glad that you did this video about using it for poison ivy and poison oak honestly the only time I thought I could use it was if I got into the stinging nettles while I was harvesting them and it does work great for stinging nettles by the way, the juicy stems you just rub them on your area that’s affected, and it instantly numbs the area like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I don’t believe I’ve seen this in the Pacific Northwest. We do however have soap root which is also an excellent remedy for poison oak & often grows near it. The bulb like root was used for washing by native Americans who also used it to shock fish for catching. The fibers surrounding the root was used as hair combs. It resembles a spider plant.

I make jewelweed salve all the time. I put a breathable cover over the oil as it is infusing and have no trouble with it going rancid. I did a quick infusion on my batch last fall (over 90 - 100 degree heat in oil 8-12 hours like you'd let yogurt cure). I have a batch going right now from air dried jewleweed. It is possible to air dry it without getting mold. I'm in the humidity south too. I chop up leaves, flowers and stems and lay out in a thin layer inside. Toss every few hours and by next day they were crispy. I'm sure there was still a bit of moisture in there, but they felt completely dry and the leaves crumbled at that point. I jar them tightly and cover with oil at that point. I used a piece of paper towel and canning ring as a breathable cover for a few days. Then covered with a solid lid and shake every day or so until I'll strain it at the 6 week mark. Then I make it into a salve. I grabbed my jar of jewelweed oil and used it straight the last time I grabbed an entire handful of poison ivy. It worked and I never got a rash. I'm going to try your witchhazel method for a spray option. Eta: We have jewelweed that covers entire mountainsides (I'm in far WNC). It is both orange and yellow (different varieties in separate patches).

Jewel Weed is also known as Touch-Me-Not plant. You mentioned that they self seed so if you look closely you’ll notice that they naturalize by a sort of expulsion of their seeds from the pods. When you touch the pods, they burst open and the seeds pop out to disperse. I like that you mentioned it does tend to grow near poison ivy. 😊

I want to share I've been freeze drying all my tomatoes raw....i deseed them then grind them up with the skins then prefreeze them the out come is a brilliant red Styrofoam looking piece which i then break up into powder then jar and seal... im making spaghetti tonight with it my thoughts are to reconstitute it slowly to control the thickness which i like thick with all the seasoning in it thus no long simmering process same for tomatoe soup which we love... i powdered onions also but in slices not griding up too many tears... for me this all shortens the time over hot stove and boiling bath water.....this year was the first in a long time ive had a bumper crop so we will see GOD Bless

We used to just rub the leaves where we were exposed to poison anything....our pediatrician said...all you eeally need to do to remove the poison oils, since they're light, is go to a stream and simply wash it off!!! He took his children camping.....

Wash with Zout Fels-Naptha soap.. when come out of the woods .. just make sure when your done u put it up high out of moisture because it will just melt the soap..My friend makes a save for me with that plant .. we love it
