In lockdown you got all the time you need. What do want him to say? "Well I thought about for a couple a minutes, and yu know what, it's Sugar Ray, the modern one, yeah he's my favorite." End of video. And something else. His name is Atlas. He's entitled to go all around the world.

I was 16 years old, watching Sugar Ray vs Hearns on PPV at my parents house, with 20 male relatives and friend eating Barbecue and screaming frantically at the TV!!! I was the only one pulling for the young man from Baltimore and I cleaned up on bets. Can you imagine that feeling that I had that evening?🥊🥊

Why were all of your friends with Hearns, did they like him better or did they just think he was going to win? I clearly recall the time myself. I remember my feeling and many others felt that Hearns was a bit too big and too strong and may hurt Ray. Leonard was similar to Pacquiao in that when they were at their very best they could simply beat everyone's ass.

I am in tears listening to Teddy talk about Sugar Ray Leonard. He was my childhood hero. He fought monsters and beat them all. If he got you in trouble, he finished you off. I never felt that Sugar Ray Leonard cheated the fans or himself when he stepped into the ring. Sugar Ray Leonard had that something extra that truly separated him from everyone else.

@EinsteinKnowedIt

@@alinuernberg8399 think the best Leonard vs the Best Camacho instead. This one is like Louis vs Marciano or Holmes vs Ali . There is an astronomical difference between 1981 and 1997 where master boxers rely on speed. Camacho was faster in 1997 than Leonard in 1997. And on a different note: A slugger may loose against a master boxer for many years. But ultimately a hard hitting slugger can regain a title because he is always a great KO punch away from victory. Ali could not beat George Foreman in the 1990s for instance.
@EinsteinKnowedIt
@EinsteinKnowedIt 4 жыл бұрын
Despite what you are saying there are those who despise his talent basically. These same individuals would NOT despise that exact talent if were possessed by their precious Manny Pacquaio. And while we are at it, let's give a round of applause to Tyson Fury who's hardened fans finally get it that the boxer style is superior. Thank to Fury the boxer style may have some hope. Otherwise we have to call mediocre working class journey men sluggers GOAT's. And that is repulsive enough. Only in boxing does the working class align with the ruling class against a common hatred. And that hatred is against elite boxers.

@@EinsteinKnowedIt i dont know about that! Hector's prime was between 1982 - 1988 so BOTh were well past their primes. Personally, I believe that Hector wouldh ave been too fast for Ray. Ray never wouldh ave been able to time him and on top of that, Hector fought left handed Prime Hector was too fast for ANYONE and that includes DLH, Pernell, Floyd Jr, Chavez, SRL - ALL OF THEM!

@@markdunham9949 you have some good points. However no one slows down the same. Sugar Ray built muscle to fight hagler. Muscle while it gives power it takes away from speed. I don't think that speed comes back.

Perfect call Teddy.Just perfect. I’m not gonna argue that Ray is the best ever,but in maybe 34 years of watching boxing and knowing enough to watch and score a fight,Ray will always be my favourite,and it’s a huge distance before you get to my second. I got to meet him at an evening with,and I was first to ask a question..I took my boy and I felt on top of the world.I spent far too much on a pair of framed shorts but when I got my photo with him,I said he looked good enough to fight Golovkin that week. He needed a repeat because of my thick accent but he seemed pleased and I think he liked my question about his tactics and how I felt the fourth round against Hagler was one of the most underrated of his career when he kept making Marvin miss by a couple centimetres. Never expected Teddy to say that and the Tyson podcast with Ray a few months ago was one of the most poignant and intense podcasts I’ve ever seen. Mike was in tears saying that Ray just brought something out in him every time they met. I know a lot of Hagler fans hate Ray,but Marvin is one of my all time faves as well. But Ray tops that mountain for me.

Hes style was very dependet on reflexes. Also have to say he dont get enough cred for hes win vs Ruiz. Ruiz wasnt the greatest hevyweight champ of all time but he was decent. He fought Evander like 8 months after Evander fought Lewis and it was really close. He also beat Rashman who koed Lewis. Roy who had hes prime at middle/supermiddle (he even could have won a titel at lightmiddle, he had Lots of fights there) goes up and dominates a heavyweight champ, thats impressive in my eyes even if that champ wasnt an all time great.

For me, it has to be Sugar Ray Leonard too. I did get to see him once up close. He was sparring for the Hearns fight in Los Angeles and a buddy of mine asked me to drive from the Valley to go watch him. When we got to the gym it was an old two story brick building in a pretty much completely black neighborhood. I was the only "white boy" there, and my buddy was Japanese, so we really stood out in the crowd hanging outside the gym. We walked to the crowd hanging outside the door of the gym and asked if Sugar Ray was still there and were told yes, he was sparring upstairs. We asked if we could go in and were told "sure", so we did. When we got upstairs it was hot as hell and the smell of sweat was thick in the humid air. Sugar Ray had just finished sparring and was dripping sweat. He was talking to all those watching and it was shoulder to shoulder and standing room only in the small room the ring was in. Someone asked him if he would beat Tommy and he responded without hesitation "I'm going to knock him out", and added "I'm serious, I'm gonna knock him out". After Ray told us he had to leave we walked downstairs and outside and hung with the locals for a bit. Since we didn't get to see him spar we asked how he looked and who he'd sparred with. We were told he'd been there all week working out, and this was his last day of sparring before the fight. They said local guys who worked out at the gym had been sparring with Ray and "today the last one really tried to take Sugar Ray out". Said he'd been trying to throw haymakers for a few rounds but Ray was to slippery for him, and that finally Ray got tired of the guy winging punches at him and tagged him hard on the chin and put him on his ass for a few minutes, and that's how the sparring sessions ended. I was bummed we didn't get there a few minutes earlier and get to see that, but it was still a thrill to see him up close, and in the ring. What really impressed me is that he was there, in old Los Angeles, hanging out with regular folks and his real fans, not in some air-conditioned high priced luxury hotel suite or exclusive gym, and he'd been working his ass off there all week hanging out with the locals. Everyone there loved him, and Ray loved being there with them, that was as clear as can be.

My favorite boxer is Sugar Ray Leonard hands down. We were both born in the DMV and I watched every fight of his as a kid. I helped survey his house in Palmer Park. Wonderful person, awesome fighter. Dude traded hands with Cuevas, Hearns, Duran and Hagler and beat them all, but Roberto got him once. Roberto was incredible also. They all were. I was blessed to watch boxing during that time.

I enjoy watching, more than any fighter of my era, Roberto Duran, for so many reasons...the ruthless, unglamorous, scientific way he dissected his opponents... the fearless defiance... those pathological, beady eyes with the famous sneer... four legitimate titles (the last title at age 37 through dismantling a larger, younger, hungry champion in Iran Barkley)... the way the ravenous fans from the tiny nation of Pamana would take over the crowds at his fights in any location... nothing would get me more excited than when an announcer would call his name before the faceoff to a televised fight. Sugar Ray Leanoard was the poster boy for boxing... but Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran was the purest savage of any fighter I've ever seen, in a former featherweight that moved up to eventually take on the best of the best, in the greatest era of the middleweight division.

Frazier was a total badass. But I gotta say, my favorite, Mike Tyson would have SMOKED smoking Joe. Possibly even faster than George did it. Mike would have come out much more aggressive than George did and had almost everything in buckets more than Joe did (movement, speed, power, inside game, pressure) other than heart of course, Joe had much more heart than Mike. But that wouldn't come into play as Mike would have gotten him right outta there... Just my opinion brother.
@izzifamilyadventures5490
@izzifamilyadventures5490 4 жыл бұрын
October 4th I use to think that too but... Frazier would not have been intimidated by Tyson, Foreman was twice the size of Frazier and Frazier just kept coming even after 6 knockdowns. Tyson did not have Frazier’s heart. No way Tyson can go 15 rounds. What if Frazier can get through the first 5 and pop Tyson with that left a few times. Tyson could cave. It would be awesome.
@october4th475
@october4th475 4 жыл бұрын
@@izzifamilyadventures5490 I hear your points brother. But plenty of guys who werent afraid of Tyson still got blown out or slowly broken down and made ineffective by him. Bruno, Ruddock, Tubbs, Holmes (not prime), Tucker, Tillis, Smith and so on. Several of them were very hard hitters and caught Tyson with massive shots on his way in and still he managed to keep his game plan and win. I could see Frazier if he made it deep being more effective, but there is no reason to think Tyson can't go 15 rounds. That 20 through 23 year old Tyson had zero stamina issues, an iron chin, and just far more fundamental and physical advantage over Joe I think. But if Joe lasted past 3 or 5, yeah he would have a chance to get in Tyson's head and do like Holyfield did.

I still remember the lead up to the Hagler fight when every expert was giving him no chance. In a less than 2-year span, he outboxed a master boxer (Benitez), foolishly but admirably brawled with the most scientifically savage fighter ever (Duran) and then walked through an all-time great Puncher (Hearns).
