Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs is the reigning Olympic Champion in the 100m Dash
But he is actually a bit different than any other Olympic Champion that we have ever seen in the event
Since 2021, Jacobs has struggled with injuries and setbacks that have prevented him from replicating the glory he experienced in Tokyo. But with the recent announcement of his coaching change as well as the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, there's some new hope for him to once again get back on top of the podium.

100m Olympic Final is one race on one day. Anything can happen. He still has a World Indoor gold to his name, which in my eyes, clears him of any "lucky" or "one-hit wonder" allegations. I think the post-Bolt era is the most important consideration here. People just expect the same level of consistency and domination nowadays, and that is just not going to be the case. Since 2017, we have had 5 different consecutive winners at World and Olympic 100m finals. And a whopping 11 different athletes shared those 15 medals from the last 5 major 100m finals. This shows that no one is on top.

Agreed, that world indoor gd essentially backed up his Olympic gold. If healthy he is very much in the mix like everyone else. And good call out on all the different medalists in the post Bolt era. It really is telling that Bolt, Blake, Gay, Powell and Gatling are the fastest in history and retired or started to slowed down around the same 3-5 year span. It was the perfect environment for so much parity in terms of new names and medalists tostep up in their places. Jacobs just happened to be first up at the next Olympics.

I mentioned those names (Bolt, Blake, Gay, Powell, Gatlin) to note that as they started to end their careers, it created an environment where ANYONE could win medals. So we actually might be in agreement. Those guys were so dominant, that once they left, everyone after is now fighting to step up and take their places as the best sprinters in the world.

Lamont reminds me of Hasley Crawford, who won the gold in 1976. They both had the race of their lives in the Olympics. You just have to be the best on that day

Excellent comparison. Crawford was an amazing all around athlete back in the 70s but also delt with injuries. If there were world championships back then, I wonder if he would have been able to win a few more medals

I agree. Once he switched full time to the sprints, he was putting in the work to be the best he could be and it all came together in Tokyo. If he is healthy, it's possible fir him to win gold again, it will be tough, but possible. Thanks for watching!

Let's also not forget that Jacobs' 9.80 is the fastest winning time after Bolt's 9.63 and 9.69 in the men's 100m at the Olympics. I hope he can get back on top! There are athletes that I follow more, but in the end, it's most interesting when everyone is in good shape, especially with how open the title is, it's so much more exciting!

Good point, 9.80 is the 3rd fastest winning time (Blake and Gatlin ran faster behind Bolt in 2012). So yea its not like Jacobs got lucky at all. The 100m is very deep right now as you said so he still has a good shot to win gold and it should surprise anyone. Thanks for watching!

He just peaked really well for the olympics, and no it wasn't "lucky", he ran 9.84 just hours before and ran 9.80 in that final, beating the likes of Kerley and Degrasse. If 2024 season goes injury free, i think he can go sub 9.8, which puts him in a great spot for winning the gold

I wasn't expecting Jacob to do anything else when he won the Olympics in 2021. Not surprised by his results since the Olympics. He was a surprise winner at the time and it is evident now. But he is an Olympic champion and no one can take that away from him. Most sprinters would rather Olympic gold medal than a world championship gold medal. Elaine Thompson didn't win anything after she won the double at the 2016 Rio Olympics and in 2021, five years later she shocked everyone to defend her titles in Tokyo.

A lot of times when it comes to greatness/championships... hard work, opportunity and luck almost always go hand in hand. Won a title many never thought he would and if he never wins it again we can never take that day away from him... bc that day was a result of yearsssss of hard work and dedication. Track is so crazy to.... one day that one person can just be totally "on" and everything goes perfect for them. Jacobs is absolutely legit, after a short injury riddled season he missed out on the final with 10.05. That's the same time Lyles eked into US 2nd round of WC trials with, and he finished that season with WC Gold. Fred Kerley, for similar comparison missed out with the only marginally better 10.02, and that was after running sub 10 prior. Biomechanically, Marcell is a wonder, and he looks stronger than many on the field. The winning times since have been slower than his Olympic time. Don't root him out for Paris 2024. I think part of this agenda is he beat up the hype American favorites, and people take that as a slight. He's rather humble, and had to do a lot to get here.

That's fair I see that argument. I guess people associate Luck with "you weren't supposed to win". So for example, not many people say Bolt got lucky in 2008, even though he was prepared and had the opportunity to run there and showcase his talent, basically in the same fashion Jacobs did. I don't think Jacobs was lucky, I think he was the best man on that day. But in this post Usain Bolt Olympic era, it was hard to see someone who was not already a somewhat established sprinter "come out of nowhere" and win gold. He ran 9.9 for the Italian record months before the Olympics though then got a slight injury. He set the European record in the semi-final of those Games which was 9.84 while he was chasing down Su Bingtian who set an Asian record with 9.83 to become the first Asian to make the 100m final. As lucky as Donovan Bailey was in 1996. What's his next fastest time? Consistency is how a performances should be measured. If You are a 1-hit wonder, it's luck. If you are dropping 9.8 over and over and 9.9s in your sleep, that isn't luck. Lyles has a slower PB, but he's running sub-10 almost every time.

Doping would assist in recovering from injuries, not causing them. Many things cause injuries, inefficient mechanics, over training, and also plain old genetics. Many elite athletes are simply not durable. Look at Anthony Davis.

Good Report. Is Overrated? So Far he had fortunate timing and circumstances in the OLympics. Has he lost desire to compete? I Think so . Is he battling injuries? Could be. Is he American? I'm more cynical than most others on here...I think he was on something. He had topped out as a consistent semi-final finisher in 2018 and 2019. All of a sudden in 2020 he's an OC...I'm open to the "nobody was there to compete against him" theory but I think coming off the juice has bodily repercussions. I never bought into the "he's legit" hype. To me Filipo Tortu, a finalist in 2019 at Doha was Italy's best sprinter.

Educate yourself before you comment. Jacobs won the Italian National Championships from 2018-2022 (this year's was the first he's lost in 5 years). He ran great indoors in 2021 before the Olympics then outdoors he broke the Italian 100m record held by Filippo Tortu who was the anchor in the 4x100 at the Games, (great close in the final to come from behind for gold). He did it in a semi-final race rather easily a few months before Tokyo for his first sub 10 sec mark but felt a strain so he didn't run in the final of that event but he really looked ready to run 9.9 low or better judging by the semi. The year after the Olympics, in 2022, he won gold against the 60m world record holder Coleman and broke the European record to do it. He in fact won 2 more championships after the World Indoor gold including the aforementioned 2022 Italian National Champs and he was the 2022 European Champion in the 100m beating Zharnel Hughes to do that (Hughes is the current bronze medalist of this years World Champs in the 100m). Count it up. That's 3 championships Jacobs won after the Olympics. You can watch his pre-Olympic progression as well (he was close to 10 flat way back in 2018/2019). He was at the 2019 World Championships where he first raced Coleman but he didn't make it to the final. He got himself a sports psychiatrist who helped him overcome nerves so he could perform better under pressure and she also taught him the gesture he does before every race to focus and calm the mind. He started training in the Olympic stadium in Rome to prepare with all the advanced technology to analyze every movement and aspect of his form/technique/stride/reaction ect. and he started doing a special over-speed training by running behind a truck with an attached shed kind of structure which is used to block out all wind resistance so he can reach speeds he wouldn't be able to in normal conditions (can be very dangerous and is risky to do but the results are being able to run faster and train more often when done safely). No such thing as luck.

Even if Jacobs wasn't a fluke , with athletes like Kerley, Lyles and Coleman ,........Jacobs will never see another victory in the 100 meters again at an Olympics or Worlds final.

Hmm, maybe, I think its really wide open, relatively, right now. Even though Lyles, Kerley and Coleman (Tebogo, Hughes, Seville etc.) are very fast, if Jacobs is healthy he could be in the mix. But well just have to see. Thanks for watching!

He was very lucky don't think he is the real deal, Possibly was on PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS and got away with it on that occasion the reasons why he had not continued to progress and prove it was not a fluke.
