Hi Kit, I completely agree with you about the assist line strength but when we jig for very large Bluefin Tuna we need to use a thicker assist cord so the Bluefin does not chew through the cord during a long fight.

That is understood, but how many people actually make their own assist hooks and how many just buy? And exactly how many of those that make their own know how to choose the right size? Also - you dont need 700lb para cord if you have the right cord to start with, not the paracord BS that one idiot told people they could use. Catching "very big" bluefin or any other fish isnt unique to your fishery but lets stick woth bluefin - a lot more are caught in Japan the very big ones are caught in the winter in the Hokkaido area - and they have been doing it for donkey years - guess what - do you think they are using cords as thick as what some people there use?

Thanks again for the vid, Kit. Learner question here: What about doing this the other way round, with the splice onto the hook eye? I realise that the exact spot where the splice goes around the metal is only one thickness, but it does make for a super small connection.

Good question Owen! Have been waiting for someone to ask this for a couple of years now! There is no rule against that- however the likelihood of failure on the solid ring side with the knot coming undone is quite high. Eapecually with an eyed hook - the connection to the hook with a splice is more likely to get abraided as well - the knot plus the binding makes this connection more abration resistant - ive tried this over the years of course and have had the failures mentioned, although i also have to mention that ive only had a few - but the few i didnt have to worry about when tied conventionally. I'd say they would be more disposable than they are worthless - say you can do it like that but keep the shorter lifespan in mind and it should be ok

Educational as always! Just one thing: the strength of the assist line will not double... on the solid it is still single and the weakest point... but 300 ist still plenty ;)
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 6 ай бұрын
you might be right...but a splice is quite strong and it might not break at 300 there. probably higher....also...sarcasm.

That is a god point , i have seen guys warp the line around the solid ring before finish the splice that way is no weak point , but to be honest i have never break an assist line my self, in contrast i had plenty of fish cut true it so i tend to look for assist line that is more abrasion resistant then # test of course withing reason.

abrasion and teeth cuts more assist hooks than actual breakage of the cord.@@luen6630

Hey kit Since you worked for vmc in the past do you know about a company called cannelle? It a french hooks company and where i live its a little bit cheaper than vmc they use the same packaging but with a different logo and they also share the same terms for the hook features and some of the products are the same i looked it up and can't find any thing about the company online other than the 2019 catalog is it a vmc rebrand or did vmc buy it ? And since we are talking about vmc what do think about okuma products hence vmc bought the it a while ago ?

Cannelle was/is a sub brand. And as far as Okuma...I don't really know since Rapala bought part of it after I left. Personally, Okuma is not within my preference range.

You removed the core, it’s no longer 700lb breaking strain? You’re joking right? Why not buy hollow core dyneema to start with?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Ай бұрын
I made use of what I had on hand. taking the core off when you build an assist hook is nothing new. You lose a little on the capacity, but the main load is on the braid itself, not the core.
